Neil Peart got the inspiration for 2112 after reading "Anthem" by Ayn Rand. It's a story of a dystopian future where individuality has been suppressed in favor of the collective. Personal achievement is abolished if not criminalized and there is no individual identity. Then one day the protagonist of the story discovers a trove of lost inventions and a library full of old books and art; creations of the previous society that had thought to have been destroyed under the rise of the current regime. The novel ends with the protagonist discovering the word, "I". Not only does 2112 parallel the story arc of "Anthem", but it is also a personal statement for the band who had been under pressure from the record company to produce more "radio-friendly" cuts that were shorter in length and had mass appeal. The response was an album whose opening track was 20 minutes long and was a defiant statement to the record company that they were not going to conform to the collective wishes of the industry, and they were going to make the music THEY wanted to make!

I've watched so many 2112 reactions. They never get old and this was one of my favs. As a 40 year Rush fan here's something I only learned a few years ago sadly. The ending....Attention All Planets of the Solar Federation (7 words repeated 3 times = 21). We Have Assumed Control (4 words repeated 3 times = 12). 2112.

This song which took up one side of the album 2112 was a screw you to their record label who didn't like the direction they were taking in their music. They wanted shorter radio friendly songs. The label didn't support their previous album. They decided that if they were going out they were going to do it their way and they wrote this masterpiece! The album was a huge success and the label never bothered them again. Rush took control. Sci-fi was really popular in the 70's . Reading Lord of the Rings was a right of passage. LOL I read it three times. Neil Peart was an avid reader and he wrote the majority of the lyrics including this song. He has written a number of books. I have read one of them. Geddy Lee has written two books. On on the bass guitar and he just put out his autobiography My Effin Life which I am reading right now and I am really enjoying it. Bytor and the Snow Dog The Necromancer The Fountain of Lamneth Xanadu Cygnus book 1 Cygnus book 2 (Hemispheres) are a number of their other longer story telling songs. Xanadu from Exit Stage Left is amazing. Even better than the studio version. Cheers

Neil was a profit. In1976 he talks about how we will be controlled by computers in the future. Look around 50 years later. It came to be true. Unreal. How did he know. I was a senior in high school and computers were unthinkable for the common man to use only the government had access to them. He did this with cars also . check red barchetta . Cars outlawed replaced by air powered machines. Unreal. Neil the profit.😊😊😊😊😊😊

Based on a short story "Anthem" by Ayn Rand. Neil was always reading and therefore wrote all the lyrics and eventually books and comic books too. Very much into sci-fi, but his writing matured as he did, philosphically and spiritually. As my high school music teacher once said; "Rush is always worth a listen"

The Overture at the beginning is actually an overture like they have in operas or whatever, where a piece of music introduces the main musical themes (ie short melodies) that are used throughout the whole piece, they usually represent something like a person or place.

What I love about 2112 - and also Cygnus X-1, Book II from the 1978 album Hemispheres - is how Rush incorporates elements of classical music and opera in their compositions, beginning with an introductory overture that previews the musical themes before launching into the story their music will tell. The albums from Fly By Night through Signals are, when taken together, are the greatest outpouring of musical creativity of any band ever. Period. The best way to listen to them is sequentially. It really shows how they evolve.

The people who introduced me to Rush did me a great favor (Thanks Mike & Jeff). "Rush" for one week on LP - then "Fly By Night" for one week - then "Caress of Steel" for one week - until I was caught up. I had the opportunity to experience Rush the first time the way that they had. Nothing but liner notes and headphones to really soak it in the way it was intended. I caught up just in time for "Presto" Tour. 2112 was one of those moments where I can remember the moment with such clarity - the time of day, the candle scent, Coca-Cola & peanuts, the details of the room I was in, lying on my bed with my feet propped on the desk, and desperately trying to absorb every instant.

The drummer, Neil Peart, was a massive reader. He ended up writing most of the lyrics for the band and even published 4 books. In the early years, most of the songs where stories with real things to say about the world. If you listen to the music, it usually is developed around what is needed to fit the intent of the lyrics. Lots of expansion and contractions to create an emotional effect. Welcome to the deep rabbit hole of Rush! 40 albums over 40 years! 3 guys that will never happen again! Master musicians that because of their fan base, did not have to compromise their music. Check out their documentary, "Beyond the lighted stage". Beware, if you follow the white rabbit down this rabbit hole, you may never leave wonderland!

Great reaction, Saeed! Heh, there was no chance you weren't going to like this, given your interests. Still fun to see you experience it for the first time. You'll get a lot of good info on this track/album, but I'll give you a shorthand version. The band got an ultimatum from their record label that they needed to start putting out more radio-friendly music, or they were finished. They decided if they were going out, they were going out on their own terms. So, they produced this epic track that took up the entire first side of the album by the same name. It was a giant F-U to their label. Not only in terms of being about as non-radio friendly as you can get, but despite it being a proper sci-fi piece if taken literally, it's really about the music industry, with the priests representing the music industry suits. And the cool thing is, the album really took off, especially in the States. It really put them on the map, and started the extremely successful rest of their careers. They never again had to worry about pressure from their label, and were able to do what they wanted in all the years that followed. It's really a crazy story how it all worked out. And to think their F-U led to such an epic masterpiece, that is still revered to this day. Once you get more background, you should check it out again, because you'll get even more out of it. Also, there is a lot of text in the video that is not lyrics, that would be good to pause to read, next time. It brings the story even more to life.

Rush started out with a small following. They were very rarely played on the Radio(FM in its young days) if at all. Most of their songs do not have the 3.5 minutes length of radio playability. You might want to check out Rush spirit of radio. Write as ode to the last of FM radio days of innocence. And big triple 🖕🏽 to the record label executives who were pressuring Rush to make songs for the radon. Here's the basic story behind 2112. Their promoters Mercury wanted them to do radio friendly songs. This was a protest. They said we're not doing this for you. We're doing it for us. So, they made the first half of the record all one song (kinda) and gave them the finger and created this MASTERPIECE This is the story of that battle. Neil Peart, after he joined the band, wrote all of the lyrics to Rush music. We lost our GOAT. He's playing for GOD now.😇 That was the last time I cried (Sorry Christine. When Stevie goes I'm going to lose it) 😭 I'm jealous because you have the cool earphones like I had with my old turntable in the day. Now all I have is my little computer speaker. This version that's cool with graphics telling the story, in the 1970s we were hit with both barrels with this, and only our imagination. " Listen to my music". "Hear what it can do". Neil Peart (pronounced Pee art) the drummer, percussionist and lyricist is known to all fans as The Professor. His lyrics are very erudite if you love reading. Neil himself has written 8 books as a writer separate to his work with Rush. The most painful to read is Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road which is the book he wrote after his family (wife and child died within 11 months of each other).

Back in the mid 70s they started recording in quadraphonics. That's why you hear the separation in your earphones. I was fifteen in 76 when this album came, and I've never been the same after. These three geniuses were way ahead of their time's. Keep going brother. Your doing phenomenal.😊

I felt like you feel now back in 1976 (I think) when I first heard 2112. I still remember where I was and who I was with because I had never heard anything like this before. This is a masterpiece and remains one of my top five albums of all time. Also, this was side 1, side 2 is a collection of more traditional length songs and unrelated to the the story on side 1 of the album, all still very good. There is another Sci Fi song on side 2 called Twilight Zone which is inspired by the tv show of the same name.

I loved your reaction to 2112! So many people never know or understand what Rush has meant to the music world- especially Mr Peart. They’re all geniuses but he was the main lyricist as well as, obviously, the drummer and percussionist. If you like the “storytelling” type of prog rock, you gotta check out The Necromancer from their Caress of Steel album- the one just before 2112. You won’t be disappointed

I've been listening to this album ever since it came out and I never tire of listening to it. If you'd like some more Rush storytelling, check out their performance of "Xanadu," Exit Stage Left tour, Montreal 1981, a song based on a Romantic Era unfinished poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge; their Tolkinesque "By-Tor and the Snow Dog," and their space-faring song about a black hole, "Cygnus X-1." Give Side 2 of " 2112" a listen as well. And if you want to see Rush SHRED your socks off, watch their performance of "Working Man," Time Machine tour, Cleveland 2011. ✌️

After the commercial failure of their 3rd album Caress of Steel where they'd dipped their toes in long songs which told stories, they were under pressure from the record label to be more like Bad Company and release shorter radio friendly hits. They decided that if this was going to be their last album they were going to do it their way. So their answer to the Label's request for radio friendly hits was a side long 20 minute epic ! What they'd learned from Caress of Steel, they got absolutely right with 2112 & was after a slow start very successful. It bought them their creative freedom to be who they wanted to be. If there was ever a band who were true to themselves, never compromised & had integrity it was Rush.

Whilst most will tell you that it's an F.U from Rush to the Record label (telling them to be more commecial) it's actually a full analogy of this situation (very meta). I may not be exactly correct about absolutely everything but this is what makes sense to me: Protagonist represents Rush The Priests represent the Record Label/Music industry The guitar represents Rush's music (ideas/creations) The Elders respresent Tradtion/Wisdom/the ideals (i.e. how it should be - common sense "left the world long ago") In the song the protagonist k*lls himself but in the animation he lives - why? When in the process of writing the song... Rush were sure they were commiting professional su*cide with this and that they were ABOUT TO have a huge fight with the record label over it (Grand Finale having no lyrics until closing). The Animation,on the other hand, was done to celebrate their 40th anniversary, so of course, by then, it was known that Rush prospered and didn't d*e, so the protagonist lived on. The Elders returning to conquer the Priests was obviously their hope at that time, that the ideals would win out. P.s. edited as have written many like this and think YT censors certain words
