Smiley Culture (RIP) was first generation born in the UK to Caribbean/West Indian parents who were invited to live and work in the UK like many others from the West Indies in 50s & 60s (UK needed workers after the WW2). He used to "toast" (rhyming over reggae dub plates) on various reggae sound system in early 80s. I remember feeling so proud when this record came out and he appeared on tv... at a time when there was so much negative stereotyping of black people on tv and in the papers. As a teenager I remember school friends (of all races) loving this. Cockney wasn't taught in schools but living as a minority in the UK you naturally pick up the culture around you.... and this was almost like a translation for speakers of Jamaican patois. But what I saw seem to happen was that white British kids (or at least ones in London) started using Jamaican slang more. The fact that the record charted seemed to spread both Jamaican patois and cockney😂. We had fun with that in tge 80s at school and college... and still do in my working life😂 Smiley was also a south Londoner..... but east London is just a few miles away. He used the names 'Terry' and 'Arthur' as they were cockney characters from a British tv show in the 70s/80s called 'Minder'. And he used 'Del boy' who was a character who used a lot of Lobdon slang from another popular tv show called 'Only Fools and Horses' .

Great stuff. I was born in East London from a Carribbean descent and this was played everywhere. To be classed as a real Cockney you have to be born in the sound of Bow Bells what is a ancient London church. East London has always been classed as the poor area of London going back to the 16th century but somehow we always overcome. What I also realised time ago was East London has a massive slang culture known as Cockney rhyming slang that was used to talk about Crime and no one knew what you was on about. Grime took that too a whole new level taking both traditional cockney slang that we grew up with with modern drug slang and our own cultural references from back home. Loving your journey Bro. Peace

Saxon Sound System is like a mini Motown of UK music, Smiley Culture, Tippa Irie and the original speed rapper, Papa Levi, add to that list, Maxi Priest and that's some array of talent.

I'm white, 54 years old, from near Liverpool, UK. I first heard this on The Tube, a UK musc show broadcast on Friday evenings in the 80s. I was already a fan of Reggae, heard this. Blew my piss.

Cockney is white London working class. Totally not posh. Smiley was 2nd generation Jamaican, who kept their accent. Most working class, black and white folk in London nor will have a mixed accent, highly Jamaican influenced. Not south Asians,

If you were young enough when this came out you would've heard a mixture of the 2, so most, the reference of Auther & Del boy were popular series at that time they are wheeler dealers, basically ppl trying to sell over priced c**p, which half the time don't work properly. 1 of smiley cultures best tune was Police officer x
