the final game of the year, the grand final between collingwood and brisbane is on saturday and there will be 100,000 fans, just dive straight in, a team scores by kicking the ball between the two middle sticks without being touched - 6 points, and gets one point if it goes between the outside posts or is touched before going through the middlle posts, you can explore the finer details and highlights later

Whats a foul you ask, in regards to this video.. Basically head contact but not always, most Aussies don't seem to understand this either. So if you have 'intent' or "eyes" for the man and you go for a hit/block or what we call a "shepherd" or "hip & shoulder" or "bump" and you end up hitting the opposition in the head, unintentional or not then that is a "free" (foul/penalty/illegal) and depending on the severity it might be fines and/or suspension for X number of following games. No-one gets "red carded" or sent off, they work these things out after the round. If you tackle (wrapping a player) and slam them into the ground and they suffer head contact with the turf, this is also illegal and depending on the severity, fines/suspensions. Now, if you have eyes/intent for the ball and you end up hitting someone in the head (even if you KO someone) then it's legal, it's classed as incidental contact and part of the game/play. EG: A pack of players go for a "Mark" (a catch) and the marking player knees another player in the head, knocking them out in the process, this is OK. You also can't hit or tackle below the knees. You can't hit/block a player going for a mark (catch) from a kicked ball but you can hit/block if they're catching a ball from a handpass/handball. You can't tackle (wrapping a player) a non-ball carrier, pretty much like all football games. You can however hit/block a non-ball carrier within 5metres of the ball. Have a look at AFL marks (catches) search "THE BEST MARK IN EACH ROUND OF AFL 2023!" uploaded by MaxSportZ. There's also best marks of all time videos plus theres a good one for 2022 and 2021, the AFL youtube put out some really good videos but they're a bit hit and miss with copyrights, shouldn't affect you at the moment because you're under 1k subs.

0:50 "Is that legal?" Well..... You are permitted to "bump" in AFL HOWEVER, the onus is completely on the "bumping" player and if any contact is made to the head of the opposing player then the "bumping" player will be fined or suspended.

Any tackle that results in head contact is a free kick to the guy who was hit. Unfortunately because of the pace of the game a lot of times the officials don’t see the contact and the free kick isn’t awarded.

Basically, if the player has the ball, then a legal tackle is below the shoulders and above the knees. If they don't have the ball, then it's not allowed to target the player, only the ball. Also, specifically trying to injure the player is banned (raking with studs, targeting lower legs, pushing them in the back, etc).
@off1k Жыл бұрын
A little bit wrong there mate, you are definitely allowed to target a non-ball carrier, has to be within 5 metres of the ball. You can't "tackle" them but you can hit/block/shepherd/bump them.
@brettbridger362 Жыл бұрын
Yep, was talking 'tackling'. You are certainly allowed to hinder, called shepherding?@@off1k
@off1k Жыл бұрын
@@brettbridger362 Hinder would be a soft tone, players can completely smash a non-ball carrier, just don't hit them in the head :D or directly in the back, below the knees. Ya shepherding as I mentioned is the same as hitting blocking bumping.

Leagality comes down to if they think you aimed for the head. If you do sometning illeagal you still play out that game but you will be band from the next 1 or more games depending on severity of your foul.

Nearly half of these result in player suspensions. Some are accidental. Most are free kicks at least. Sometimes players from the same team clash heads.and that’s after years of new rules trying to stop player concussions. Check out olden days.

One thing to know befoe you watch the final is that everyone hates collingwood!
@jgraaay18 Жыл бұрын
Generally, when it comes to bumps and tackles; it needs to be between the shoulders and the knees. I think bumps can't come from in front, also. Aussie rules has no red card, instead, in the AFL at least, incidents will be dealt with by suspensions handed out after the match. Usually in the event of a hit above the shoulders (which the AFL has been really coming down on ever since the NFL started investigating the consequences of repeated head hiits), the team whose player took the hit gets a free kick.
@Honkersification10 ай бұрын
hahahahahaha! Equipment? Oh. yeah, well, it can be brutal and beautiful in equal measure.

a lot of these players who r bumping other players depending on how they bump they will get what we call reported by the umpire or by video and can face if found guilty be fined and or get suspended for weeks at a time the fine can be 5,10 or even 20 thousound dollars
@stanroach2842 Жыл бұрын
Some of the allowed & not allowed Any contact above the shoulders = a free kick & "can" be reported (which can lead to a suspension.) Anything below the knees = free kick & if deliberate attempt to trip can be reported. Pinning the players arms to his side & slinging him into the ground = free kick & if his head hits the ground often reported (which can lead to a suspension.) Launching yourself off the ground & crashes into the other player hitting their head = reported (usually carries a minimum 1 week suspension.) any contact from front on when a player is attempting to mark the ball = free kick Direct push in the back or falling onto a players back as you tackle them to the ground = free kick Holding any part of a players clothing or body to stop them running towards the ball = free kick. Blocking a player from running/jumping for a mark if you don't attempt the mark = free kick HOWEVER When a player HAS the ball - bumping from or tackling from front on is allowed. If, as you go to tackle, a player deliberately ducks his head (to draw a head high tackle) = no free kick If, a player lifts his arm up forcing the tackle to slip from his arm to above shoulder height = no free kick
@off1k Жыл бұрын
Pretty good break down :) except "Any contact above the shoulders = a free kick" is slightly wrong. Players going for a mark or catch or spoil and cleaning someone up (with head contact) in the process won't be a free, it's play-on/part of the play. EG: Ziebell at 7:20 in this video was play-on. Only when a player has eyes for the man in a marking contest or spoil and hitting the head will be a free, Jeremy Cameron on Harris Andrews few years ago is perfect example.
@stanroach2842 Жыл бұрын
@@off1k not entirely correct - clean someone up with head high contact spoiling a mark will often be a too high free kick
@off1k Жыл бұрын
@@stanroach2842 Yeah that's usually when a player misses the spoil and collects the head. That will be a free, but at least it won't be suspension/fines no matter the damage unless it's deemed intent for the man. If they make contact with the ball when the intent is the ball and still hit the head with part of their arm or body, then it's play-on. Intent is key here and is the first rule under prohibited contact in AFL Laws.
@stanroach2842 Жыл бұрын
Think of an NFL salary...then think on this. There are between 36 & 38 players allowed on an AFL teams list. EVERY team is restricted to a total salary cap of AUD $13,540,000.....THAT is a total team salary cap USD $8,665,600.....imagine fielding an NFL roster with THAT salary cap.....

@jayweb519 ай бұрын
When tackling an opponent, you must be aware of their head; a tackle is limited to between the shoulders and the knees, once tackled you are not allowed to sling a player to the ground or dump a player. When applying a bump, again you are not allowed to make contact with the head; if you jump up to tackle, the other player should also be in the air otherwise you will be penalized and even be suspended. Players have been told, time and time again, they are responsible for their actions; an any illegal action will have consequences. The AFL is trying to reduce the number of concussions occurring in the game; thus reducing any possibility of brain damage later in life.

These types of videos do no sport any favours, as the can place an unwanted taint on the sport. The best way to learn about a game, is to firstly learn the rules; then try to watch a full game. As others have stated, you should watch "What Is AFL: Aussie Rules Explained"; follow up with the companion video "A Beginners Guide to Australian Rules Football", these should give you a ground approach to the game.
