There was a constant joke on the show about American car engineers being incompetent. They make 8.4 litre V12 engines and then somehow only get like 64 hp from it. Whereas a German engineer could get 100bhp from an average food blender. Clarkson used to make the point of: Why bother making a muscle car, giving it the engine from some earth-moving equipment and then only giving it 82 brake horsepower?

hI connor, a relatively small car is around 120 bhp and they normally have 1.2 to 1.4 litre engines. Having a 2.4 litre engine with 170 bhp is like Arnold Schwarzeneger only being able to lift a bag of sugar.

@neilpickup237

We would now consider 2.4 litres to be quite a large engine as most engines rarely have more than 4 cylinders and are under 2 litres, often well under with 3 cylinders being far from unusual, and often turbocharged as standard. For example, one large group incorporating FIAT Chrysler and Alfa Romeo fits a 1.4 litre (85 cubic inches) engine to their ordinary cars developing the same power as that 2.4 litres (145 cubic inches) US one. They also get the same sort of power out of a 2 litre (120 cubic inches diesel! And they are mainstream rather than specialist. P.S. Engine sizes are nominal and often subject to significant 'rounding' so they will be smaller than the stated capacity. I have just given conversions of the nominal litre capacity rounded to the nearest 5 cubic inches, just so that people who think in cubic inches have something they are familiar with.

American car engines are big capacity but low horsepower, because they are build to provide torque, which makes them drive better with the automatic gearboxes you have a lot. That being said, 170hp out of a 2.4 liter is still pretty low, even before that Pontiac came out Honda was building 2 liter engines with upto 220hp

When he’s making fun out of the world map, that bit in that episode was them trying to find out where in the world is the best road to drive on. And I’m pretty sure he says about North America “Everyone does 5” which I’m assuming is another dig at Americans all being overweight and heavy, which slows their cars down when they drive around, I guess? That’s my assumption.

When he talks about the engine sizes and the Break Horse Power (BHP), He's making fun out of the quality of the engines. The Larger the Engine capacity the more power it should be able to generate. Power can be measured in more than one way, The main way used for cars is the BHP, but there is also Torque than can be used. Think Big Rig Trucks, They have huge engines that generate colossal Torque figures, but the BHP figures,while large, are only mid range sports car levels. Ones is good for a race and one is good for getting all the equipment there.

Jeremy Clarkson bought a Ford GT40 and it was a running joke on TopGear, he had to fill up when he drove to the TopGear studios and again to go home. It only did 80mpg. Then there was a problem with it spending more time in the Ford Dealership than it did in his garage. 2400cc (cylinder capacity) = 2.4L ,170bhp is power.
