Enfield is a comedy genius. It mustn't be safe and consensual. He presses down on all manner of pressure points and unspoken thoughts. This sketch is an example about how British people observe German people observing British people observing German people. All of his observations are extremely accurate. It's a tragedy that we are too scared create humour like this any more.

PS freezing brass monkeys - Freezing the balls off a brass monkey. Useless information - A brass monkey was a holder for cannon balls on ships, as the weather got cold the metal would contract and the cannon balls would fall off. lol how boring am I? lol nice reaction bro!

Urban myth. It is widely believed that a brass monkey is a brass tray used in naval ships during the Napoleonic Wars for the storage of cannonballs (piled up in a pyramid). The theory goes that the tray would contract in cold weather, causing the balls to fall off. This theory is discredited by the US Department of the Navy and the etymologist Michael Quinion and the OED's AskOxford website for five main reasons: The Oxford English Dictionary does not record the term monkey or brass monkey being used in this way. The purported method of storage of cannonballs (round shot) is simply false. Shot was not stored on deck continuously on the off-chance that the ship might go into battle. Indeed, decks were kept as clear as possible. Such a method of storage would result in shot rolling around on deck and causing a hazard in high seas. Shot was stored on the gun or spar decks, in shot racks (longitudinal wooden planks with holes bored into them, known as shot garlands in the Royal Navy), into which round shot were inserted for ready use by the gun crew. Shot was not left exposed to the elements where it could rust. Such rust could lead to the ball not flying true or jamming in the barrel and exploding the gun. Indeed, gunners would attempt to remove as many imperfections as possible from the surfaces of balls. The physics do not stand up to scrutiny. All of the balls would contract equally, and the contraction of both balls and plate over the range of temperatures involved would not be particularly large. The effect claimed possibly could be reproduced under laboratory conditions with objects engineered to a high precision for this purpose, but it is unlikely it would ever have occurred in real life aboard a warship.

My Dad, at the time was a 62 year old insurance broker in London and had a 21 year old German broker apologise for the war to him. Neither of them were in the war. Such a weird situation.

And completely unnecessary too. My wife's father flew Lancaster bombers during the war. When he was engaged in conversation by two teenage girls from Germany he was asked if he had been Germany. He said yes. Where they asked. He told them. He did not tell them he went to drop bombs. No one is responsible for other people's actions like that.

I love Jurgen! I like the one where he’s on the banks of the River Thames & he joins in a historic tour. He asks a question about the buildings on the bank & why they all seem much newer buildings than the ones on the other bank. Then he just comes out with “it was the German Luftwaffe, was it not”?…. The tour guide is like “well… yes”. Then he flies into “I feel I must apologise for my countries behaviour during the war”.

You really are on point though man. Harry Enfield is a legend, extremely funny guy, not only in his acting but in his writing and also (I'd argue) in his ability to capture an almost imperceptible 'zeitgeist' amongst the culture he inhabits. He just seems to 'get it'. He always did. You realise he startef in the late 80's right? You seem to only look at his work in the 2000's???

We do make jokes about the last war, even with Germans, because firstly none of us were there, and secondly our joking is intended to form a bridge. I know a few German members of the Laurel and Hardy appreciation society and they would be disappointed at conventions if there was no banter. E.g. German Michael kept us waiting while he got into the taxi, and someone said "Come on Michael, no wonder you lost the War!" No offence meant, none taken. Just a laugh.

The thing about this sketch it is more a commentary on the British then the Germans albeit I don't think Harry Enfield realised this when he first created this character. The reality is Germans and Germany have moved on from WW2, they don't obsess about it and don't constantly bring it up in conversation. Germany and Germans as a people see themselves as a modern European country looking to the future not the past. It is Britain and the British that constantly obsesses about WW2 and brings it up all the time despite the vast majority of the population being born after that war finished. WW2 is so engrained into the British psyche that just saying "The war" to another British person is enough to convey the conflict they are talking about is WW2!
