The lady between the king and queen on the balcony was the kings mother Queen Mary. It is her crown that Camilla will use at the coronation. If you notice she is wearing a 2 drop diamond brooch in the centre of her chest, these are the cullinen 2 & 3 diamonds. These are going to be placed in Camilla's crown. The cullinen 1 diamond is the big one you like in the kings sceptre 😅

Thanks, this was great to watch. My grandparents were there, and actually got a mention early in the film ("Mr Lyons of Australia..."). After the coronation the fabric hangings you can see in the Abbey were sold off. Nannie and Grandad bought some and I have a piece hanging framed in my dining room.

Albert never wanted to be king, and wasn't raised to be. After his brother Daviid (who used the reginal name Edward VIII) abdicated, it was thrust upon him. Albert took the Reginal name of George VI, and proved to be a worthy monarch, despite his reluctance for the role. His leadership and empathy for the people was felt during WWII, especially when he chose to stay in London, despite the bombing campaigns by the Germans. He suffered ill-health, hence his rather premature death, but I think he is fondly remembered for his service, he was always a dignified character who did his duty.

A Regent is someone who rules on behalf of the Sovereign in the event of incapacity or not being of age to rule. When King George III was suffering from madness, his son Prince George ruled in his place until George III died. That period was called "The Regency". On a side note, Prince George (later George IV) is the "Georgie Porgie" of the nursery rhyme who "kissed the girls and made them cry". The term "Regnant" is usually only applied to a female Sovereign (Queen Regnant) to distinguish the title "Queen" from a Consort (Spouse of a King). So, Queens Elizabeth I, Anne, Victoria and Elizabeth II were Queens Regnant. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Queen Mary were Queens Consort.

You might like the movie 'The King's Speech". It's about George's speech coach who helped him with this coronation (because George stuttered). It also gives a rather unflattering view of his predecessor Edward VIII, the one who married the American.

At that stage the Royal Family were mainly the brothers and sisters of the new King ( and therefore the aunts and uncles of Queen Elizabeth II). The eldest brother, who had briefly been King Edward VIII ( but was now called the Duke of Windsor) wasn't present. But the other two surviving brothers Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and his wife Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, George, Duke of Kent (tragically killed during the War), and his wife Marina, Duchess of Kent, are on the photos. George VI's daughters, the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, were escorted into the Abbey by the only sister, Mary, Princess Royal. The King's mother, the formidable Queen Mary, is also there. ( A little known fact is that she was one-quarter Hungarian. ) Her husband had been King George V; his sister Maud, Queen of Norway, was also present.

George VI was the current kings grandfather who reigned as George VI one of his other names as a tribute to his own father George V. His actual first name being Albert or Bertie to his family. The husband of a reigning Queen like the late Elizabeth II is always a Prince and never a king because a king always trumps a queen. Prince Philip the late Elizabeth II's husband was Prince Consort, but was never officially spoken about as this. The Prince of Wales is the title bestowed on the Heir to the Throne. Previously carried by the now king and bestowed on the kings eldest son Prince William by Charles III the day after Charles became the king.

At the age of 24, she was betrothed to her second cousin Prince Albert Victor, the eldest son of the Prince of Wales and second in line to the throne. Six weeks after the announcement of the engagement, he died unexpectedly during an influenza pandemic. The following year, she became engaged to Albert Victor's only surviving brother, George, who subsequently became king.

Old-school tv pictures came in fine lines, before pixels came along. You've grasped the details of the Monarchy Connor. The Monarchy provides continuity. The Royal Family costs much less than electing a president every four years, and tourists spend big on visiting UK. The Japanese especially are very fond of our way of going about our hierarchy. The koh-i-noor diamond is worn by a Queen because it's cursed when a man wears it. The diamond in the King's sceptre is Cullinan 1, most valuable diamond in the world. It's impossible to put a true value on the Regalia, but it's in the billions. It belongs to the Nation, not the Royal Family.

the title of Queen Mother is actually quite recent. The mother of George VI was known as Queen Mary from the time his father George V became King. And similarly, the wife of George VI became Queen Elizabeth. She was not a queen regnant so did not become Elizabeth II, just Queen Elizabeth. But when George VI died his daughter became Elizabeth the Second. But with two Queens both called Elizabeth around a new title was given to the first of them. The Queen Mother.

At least five Americas... I mean how far does one want to go back, or put differently, it can be hard to know where to start but the website of the Royals gives it as 802 which, although not yet a fully unified kingdom, the King of Wessex was Ecgberht and he had the title "bretwalda" which meant something like Senior King. Certainly by that time the borders of the Heptarchy (seven kingdoms) had all but dissolved. It came down to Alfred the Great who, by his death in 899, consolidated the English ruled part and fortified the Western part of the.islsnd against the Danelaw in the East. By the end of the tenth century, the Scandinavian rulers controlling the for a while the whole country, retreated back across the North Sea and the rest his history!

In terms of the crown that camillia is using is the Crown of Mary of Teck who is Elizabeth the seconds grandmother. It does not have the controversal diamond that the Queen mothers crown has. Mary of teck hoped that all future Queen consorts( wife of the King,) would use her crown in their corinations. This might still come true. However as she was still alive during her daughter in law the queen mother's coronation. It was considered inappropriate for a queen consort to be crowned with mary of tecks crown as she was still alive.

I'm sure thus has already been clarified elsewhere here... but before we go any further I feel the need to clarify a couple of things for you, Connor.... King Edward VIII, was never Crowned. He abdicated before he married Wallis Simpson the American divorcee. He was given the title Duke of Windsor, and died in 1972. A QUEEN REGNANT is a Queen in her own right. She is the daughter/heiress of a previous monarch. However, her husband is NOT a King, as "King" is considered the "greater" title. Therefore, a Queen Regnant's husband is a Prince Consort, eg. Prince Philip (husband of Queen Elizabeth) and Prince Albert (husband of Queen Victoria). The Prince Consort is not "crowned" as part of the coronation ceremony of his wife. A QUEEN CONSORT is the wife of a KING REGNANT, (a reigning king). Just as a Prince Consort is the husband of a reigning Queen. Do not be confused by the fact that Queen Elizabeth II had the same first name as her mother. King George VI was the father of Queen Elizabeth II. His wife, also Elizabeth (maiden name Bowes-Lyon) was his Queen Consort and mother of both Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. A Queen Consort is actually "crowned" as part of the the Coronation ceremony. If, howerver, she is a subsequent wife, after a previous wife has died, she is crowned in a ceremony of her own. As for example Queen Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I. When King George VI died. His wife was no longer Queen Consort, but received the title of Queen mother. She had been "crowned" already, at her husband's Coronation, as his widow, she did not lose her title of Queen, but to avoid confusion with he daughter as the new Queen Elizabeth II, she was always thereafter refered to as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother. Do not confuse REGNANT with REGENT. A King or Queen "Regnant" is a reigning Monarch in their own right. A "Regent" is someone substuting/standing in for the role...usually for a minor, or a Monarch with physical or mental health issues which incapacitates them. As an aside, I mention that Queen Mary, the Queen Consort of King George V, was still alive when her son George VI was crowned, and was still alive when he died in 1952. She was grandmother to Queen Elizabeth II, and great grandmother to Charles and Anne. She died in 1953, before the Coronation of her granddaughter.

The older woman was Queen Mary, the King's mother, the widow of George V. The other woman, who was with the young princesses in the Abbey, was Princess Mary, the Princess Royal, who was the Kings sister. Edward VIII didn't actually have a coronation, this was planned as his, but after the abdication, they crowned his brother instead.

King George VI stuttered badly. It took him much work to overcome this. At this time he found it particularly hard to be the centre of attention. He was one of our best kings and the humblest.

Queen Elizabeth II's (QEII) uncle, who married Wallace Simpson, abdicated before his Coronation and was known by some as "The Uncrowned King". QEII's mother "Queen Consort Elizabeth" was still alive when I was younger and known as The Queen Mother. She remained busy, making public Royal Visits and so on. If Camilla outlives Charles III, I wonder if she'd be called "The Queen Step-mother", which is what she is to Prince William, our current new Prince of Wales? I don't know.

@carolineb3527 Жыл бұрын
Most likely title for Camilla, if she outlives the King, is Queen Dowager. That's the traditional title but it wasn't used for his wife when George VI died because there already was a Queen Dowager - HM Queen Mary. What made it even more complicated was that the second Queen Dowager, who was mother of the new Queen (Elizabeth II), had the same name as her daughter. So she became known as the Queen Mother, or more formally, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, which made a distinction between her and her mother-in-law (Queen Mary) and her daughter (QEII).

The Widow of the King is still know as Queen. When King George VI was crowned. His Mother Queen Mary was simple know as Queen Mary. When King George VI died his Mother Queen Mary was still alive. So when Queen Elizabeth II was crown he mother was still Queen Elizabeth so to avoids confustion between the 2 Queen Elizabeth her mother was given the title The Queen Mother. It have never been used before. It is unlikely to be used again.

Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936. This would have been his coronation day if he hadn't. He wasn't even invited, quite rightly in my opinion, to his brother and sister-in laws coronation.

The husband of a queen is not automatically given the title of prince. Mary I and II were married to a kings, Queen Anne and Victoria's husbands were already princes in their home countries. Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, had the title of prince given to him by the queen in 1957 mainly because his own children outranked him.

Nope you wrong Mary I husband was given the title of King of England. When Mary I married philip he wasn't king yet. His father was still alive. Queen Mary II husband william of orange was prince but he was also grand son of Charles I and parliament pretty much invited Mary and William to invade England and dethrone Mary's father James II. So william so himself as conqueror and demanded he became co- monarch with his wife. That's why their titles was Mary II & WILLIAM III of England. Queen Anne's husband prince George was also offered the titles of king but he wasn't interested and since him no husband of female monarch had title of king.

What would Prince Philip have been called if the Queen had died first? I suspect it would just have been Duke of Edinburgh, but there isn't really a precedent, as its only happened twice, and the circumstances were very different. The husbands of Victoria and Anne died before them, Elizabeth was unmarried so it was just the two Mary's. Mary II husband was king in his own right as William III, he carried on doing that. Mary I was married to King Philip of Spain and carried on doing that. It was only with Prince George the consort of Queen Anne that the idea of the consorts of Queens were not King's, before that they were.

Queen Mary was Georges mother. Queen Elizabeth the Queen mother was only known as that as her daughter was Elizabeth The Queen. If QE11 had had another name her mother would have just been known as QE as had Queen Mary. In the group photos there would have been senior Dukes and duchesses, like Kent Gloucester etc

Intresting fact that king Charles is going to be using the same corination robes as King George the 6th seen here. He is recycling his grandfathers corination robes. If you watch the corination then you will be able to see the robes of the king used here in colour.

Queen Elizabeth (born Elizabeth Bowes Lyon) the wife of King George the Sixth was only known as the Queen Mother on the death of her husband and the accession of their daughter, Queen El;izabeth the Second. You refer to 'Queen Anne' a couple of times. Queen Anne was Queen of England three hundred years ago. I think the person you are looking at is the young Pricess Margaret. The older, white haired lady is Queen Mary, the widow of George the Fifth and mother of George the Sixth

The queen mother is the wife of the former monarch and mother to the reigning monarch. If a king dies and his wife if queen consort and they have no children together, she becomes queen Dowager. Now king George's wife was queen Elizabeth, queen consort and later queen mother. She was the mother to the late monarch Elizabeth II and princess royal Margaret. At the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II Britain had 3 queens: the Dowager Queen Mary; the Queen mother Elizabeth and the Sovereign Queen Elizabeth II.

King George 6, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth, Princess Margret,..... Queen Mary { widow of King George 5 KG6 mother, a very strict lady who always sat in a straight backed chair } missing is Edward the eldest son who abdicated to marry Wallace Simpson. the new Queen Never forgave them. She said that the strain of being King hastened Georges death. Elizabeth became the Queen Mother and lived to 102yrs. Prince Phillip was the Prince Consort. Camilla would have been the Consort but Charles has named her full Queen, so its King Charles 3 and Queen Camilla.
