Hi Connor, I live on the ridge where Hotspurs army formed up, and my postal address includes the line "Upper Battlefield", other maps I've seen that're overlaid on modern maps have the extreme left wing of his army formed up in my garden. As you look at the map, the long narrow wooded area to the right is mostly gone but is still marked on maps as "Balls Coppice", another name for a wooded area. My neighbouring farm to the West has a field that is to this day known as "The Field of Arrows" due to the huge number of arrowheads that have been uncovered there. Further South towards Shrewsbury, in a place called Harlescott, the residents of the first row of cottages dragged their mattresses into the street to lay the wounded on, and that is how Featherbed Lane got it's name, (my junior school was on Featherbed Lane).

Connor, seek out Shakespeare's plays from Richard II to Richard III, and everything will make more sense to you regarding The Wars of the Roses. BBC's The Hollow Crown is the best recent series which goes through all of The Henriad Plays. Some amazing performances from Ben Wishaw as Richard II, Jeremy Irons as Henry IV, Patrick Stewart as John of Gaunt, Tom Hiddleston as Prince Hal of Wales/Henry V, and most memorably, and Shakespeare's greatest villian, Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard III. If you are daunted by Shakespearean language, look up what Iambic Pantameter is and how it works, and marvel at what Shakespeare did with the English language.

You should watch Kenneth Branaghs Henry V (1989). Truly magnificant. It got the battle, the blood, and horses. Sharp wit and camaraderie. Shakespeare would be pleased.

Long enough ago, we had ancestors on both sides. I lost Scottish ancestors at Halidon Hill due to the incompetence of Douglas.

"Oh, for a muse of fire that would ascend the brightest heaven of the imagination. A kingdom for a stage, princes to act and monarchs to behold the swelling scene. Then should the warlike Harry, like himself, assume the port of Mars and at his heels, leashed in like hounds, should famine, sword and fire crouch for employment. But, pardon gentles all, the flat unraiséd spirits that have dared, on this unworthy scaffold, to bring forth so great an object. Can this cockpit hold the vasty fields of France? Or may we cram within this wooden 'O' the very casques that did affright the air at Agincourt? Oh pardon, since a crooked figure may attest in as little place a million. Piece out our imperfections with your thoughts! Into a thousand parts divide one man and MAKE IMAGINARY PUISSANCE! Think when we talk of horses that you see them, printing their proud hooves i'the receiving earth. For 'tis your thoughts that must now deck our kings, carry them here and there, jumping o'er times, turning th'accomplishments of many years into an hourglass. For the which supply, admit me, Chorus to this history. Who, prologue-like, your humble patience pray, gently to hear, kindly to judge, our play!"

War of the Roses? King Edward III had too many sons and daughters. 80% of us are descendants of King Edward III now. The result was a civil war from 1367 - 1485. Tensions under King Richard II from 1367-1400 was the first phase. Tensions from 1455-1485 was the second phase. But as in this film, fighting happened in between. Bodkin tipped arrows for penetration, but then possible to do surgery on the wounded prince (shades of King Harold in 1066). The Black Prince, oldest son of King Edward III, fought at Crecy at 16 too. The Black Prince never became king, but he did Father King Richard II.

At the beginning you mentioned British history then changed it to English history. It’s usually all entwined between the home nations in some shape or form.

The days when the elitist rulers went into battle and fought for their lives. Can you imagine the leaders of today in the front line ?
