The name, as many Norse names are still in use. Specially names that relate to the old favorite god of most: Tor, and Hebraic names are not as widespread as in the rest of Europe, and "Western Nations", probably as a result of Christianity were very late to spread here, and most of the old Germanic traditions still have a life here, as with dancing around the Maypole, is very strong in Sweden. I don't know about the rest of Scandinavia, but in Norway midsummer solstice is celebrated by giant bonfires all around the nation. And specially midwinter solstice is still very strong. All the Christmas traditions have origins here, as with dragging an evergreen tree into the home, and decorating it, is a celebration of the rebirth of life, and how the sun returns after almost dying out in the winters. Even how kids give "Santa" a glass of milk and cookies, are after putting out a bowl of porridge for the the local "nisse" as "Saint Nicholas" is named here, but have no relation to. (The dark variant of elves, the dwarfs, very similar to the Irish beliefs in fairies, that used to be feared, but then got a more innocent variation).

You speak like a true skald. If you were born hundreds of years ago, you would travel from hill fort to hill fort and earn your living by telling stories. Entire tribes would gather around to hear your tales.

Joe Smith Well! In those days you had to be factual as well as entertaining and you had to know music so....sometimes certain facts got "fudged" which should tell a modern historian to BE CAREFUL of "bardic sources" even today nationslists of certain tribes will give a history that is completely barren of any facts whatsoever in order to fit their own nationalist agenda. 🎥

I meant that he has the tone of a skald, way of constructing his sentences. Coming from the Balkans, I am fully aware how trashy nationalist-inspired stories are. They don't even follow their own logic or sequence at most times.

Excellent story Old Bean. The time is fast approaching when the saga of the North Sea Empire can finally be told! I'm excited to hear it. It's a time of a real Game of Thrones, with so very many imposing Jarls looming behind the throne of Canute. I hope that in the telling of this imminently approaching story, you will spoil us for content. It would fantastic if we get separate videos on the power-brokers like Jarl Godwin, Jarl Siward (of Shakespearean infamy) Eirik Jarl of Northumbria, Thorfinn Jarl of Orkney and maybe a revisiting of Jarls Uhtred and Eadric, and if we are lucky, additional videos for King Brian and King Macbeth. It all tells like some grisly and heinous opera. I can't wait. Please make it awesome.

Could you cover the Holy Roman Emperor's campaigns against the German pagan Saxons? There was something like three wars that made the whole Stormcloaks versus the Empire look like a picnic by comparison. In fact I think the Stormcloak story was inspired by the Saxon rebel leaders who openly defied the Holy Roman Emperors.

I don't know if the video was intended for just Torkel the Tall, or the Jomsvikings as whole. If it was for the Jomsvikings you seem to have missed the battle at Fyrisvollene between 980-986. The battle was led by Styrbjørn (current ruler of the Jomsvikings) to claim the Swedish kingdom from his uncle, Eirik the Victorius (who gained the nickname by winning this battle).

@robertpederesn7829
@robertpederesn7829 5 жыл бұрын
At this point yes, king Eirik is considered to be the first king "mention" who where king of these territories with the exception of Skåne. Skåne was a part of Denmark untill 1658 but "Sweden" existed long before it was a part of it. After Eirik the Victorious Sweden remained mostly undvided (with exception of the civil wars like between the Sverke Ætten and Erik Ætten). Gautland was a kingdom on it's own but mostly it was ruled by a monarch who also happend to rule Sveariki/Svitjod or Sverige. To say Sweden in this matter is not a mistake, unlike the period before Eirik the Victorius.

Wish I had such a great narrating voice, or I'd made similar Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Germanic videos. And actually it's not pronounced "Yomsvikings", it's certainly with a J, but with short O, more like Jômsviking, like the O in Jorvik, with the O as in "OOOM" (the meditation sound/word). And not VAYKING, but WÎKÎNG. People make fun of Scandinavs speaking English, but Norwegian with an English accent is actually hilarious. :).

@elvenkind6072
@elvenkind6072 4 жыл бұрын
@@arawn1061 Skaaunska! :) But they (The English) have no clue how to pronounce an R. They say "Ail" or similar, twisting the tongue in a strange way instead of spitting out the letteR. Skåne-people have a very clear, almost harsh R, as we use on the West-Coast here in Bergen, Norway, a bit similar to how they pronounce R in Israel, I would claim. While normal, civilized, soft Swedish, as in Stockholm, have a barely sounding R, as also eastern Norwegians, and I'm guessing it would be easier for an Englishman to deal with? It's fascinating by the way how stubbornly Scandinavs hold on to their local variants of the modern Norse. Just a short drive from county to county gives a greater variation, then from Oxford English to Deep South American English or Aussie English. Although actual Norwegian died out with the Black Death, 200 years after the plague they no longer had a clue in how to read the books in how they used to write old Norwegian, but it was much closer to old Norse. Modern Norwegian is based on Danish, hence it's so easy for us to understand Danish. But not the other way around it seems. I asked some Danes if they understood Norwegian once. They nodded, and I started to talk, but then they begged me to change to English after a while. :) Only Icelandic people and those in the Western Isles, know how to speak how we all used to do here. Sorry for the long answer, as I'm very fascinated by Germanic linguistics and etymology etc.

Magnus was right btw it's not good to have a rogue army on your soil aka Pretorian Gaurd and other examples like the Knights Templar and even the Samurai of Japan. BUT had he kept the Order alive and had it serve him only a certain battle in 1066 might have gone badly for the Saxons and imagine William meeting his distant cousins on the field. No amount of Norman calvary charges would have broken a Jomsborg sheildwall! I find just 1 little detail missing here: The kings of England were Edward the Confessor who ultimately lost to his second, the usurper Harold Godwin who himself lost his crown to William after Hastings in 1066.

Torcells name is Torkjell Høie. Thats the right name. In the battle of the danish trone, Magnus Olavson, son of Olav Haraldson, the king of Norway, overrun jomsborg in 1043, and put and final end to the jomsvikingene. In the battle of hjørungavåg, thats the right name of the place, were the Norwegian ladejarl beats jomsvikingene on the western shore of norway. Jomsvikingene was mercaneries and most of the payed soldier troughout all history, never put theyre heart in loyalty to anyone but their selfs. So, its most likely to believe that theyre reputation is somehow overrated. The norwegians both beat them and put a stop to the order.

The name 'Sweden' is technically incorrect. It was called 'Svidjodt' - the land of the Svears. Sweden is the land of the Svears and the Geats, founded in the 12th c.
