"Heroes and Villains" was a Christmas special episode, on 25 December 1996 ... It was watched by an audience of 21.3 million, a record for the show ... Del and Rodney are invited to a fancy dress party (obviously dressed as Batman and Robin) but thing don't go as planned !

They were on their way to a fancy dress, but they turned up to funeral instead because the guy died and their answer machine didn't work properly so they accidentally turned up as batman and Robin not realising the host died. The reason why the area was dead with no people, they broke down in elephant and castle area possibly on a Sunday even. As this was filmed a long time, ago before the councils new home scheme where Labour councils sold off much of the land to private housing corporations to build new tower blocks for private tenants, the area was actually much quieter during that time of week and night. There weren't as many takeways open, no uber or deliveroo so less drivers of minicaband food delivery drivers. That part of London was always dead on Sunday nights

Great reaction, fascinating your observation at the councillor lady going to her car and attempted robbery with Michael Jackson videos I am guessing your thinking from Thriller. Yeah the clothes the artificial lighting on the set in the dark all of that; your right very similar something I never picked up on. To try and give some quick context they were on the way to a fancy dress party when their car broke down (hence the "fog"/smoke) and so decided to get to the party on foot

When they’re at the party, Trigger (the dude who was with Del in the bar) also didn’t know the fancy dress party had been cancelled, but still came in costume. A smart suit saying ‘I’ve come as a chauffeur’ 😊

Everyone talks about sitcoms but this is easily the best and the highest rated. For a reason as well, this is just one of many amazingly funny moments. David Jason who plays del has some of the best comedic timing and reactions I have ever seen.

The pubs were about to empty, and Rodney was worried that they would be caught outside in their costumes by drunken hordes. So Dell suggested that they run. It was less than 5 minutes to the costume party, and if they were quick, they could avoid the inevitable throngs as the pubs closed.

Fun fact: The episode this clip is from ('Heroes and Villains') is the most-watched single channel broadcast of all time here in the UK. It had 24 million viewers when it was first broadcast on BBC One on Christmas Day 1996, including my parents and sister (I was five at the time, so I was probably saw it at the time as well but as too young to remember). Royal events, state funerals and FIFA World Cup matches and finals have had more, but they're always on multiple channels so their figures are taken by combined viewership. It's a classic!

You have questions, I have answers. The setup is they were on their way to a fancy dress party and their van crapped out in the middle of a town centre. Back then pubs and bars were only open until 11pm so the streets would be dead until 11.05pm in most towns. The trotter brothers were concerned about getting out of their van in fancy dress right before pub closing time because they would have been ridiculed at length by the general public, who in England have no more enjoyable pastime than mocking anyone who is in a less than perfect situation.

*** SPOILERS *** Very brief explanation follows. They got a new years invite, which Del got confused with being a Fancy Dress party. Their car broke down on the corner, but the streets were quiet because of it being News year, people in doors, or at events. Turned out the 'fancy dress' was actually real 'fancy dress' tioe and suits Del had written to the counciler complaining about a water issue in the council flat he and Rodney and Graandad were living in. At the end of it all... the water issue was fast tracked.

Interest in OFAH was so intense at this time they secretly filmed in the early hours of the morning and everyone was sworn to secrecy.. The media would have spoiled the gag.. Nobody was going to turn into a werewolf ( the clue is in the title of the clip - 😄 ) . Michael Jackson recorded his video in 83'. The MJ video premiered on a show called The Tube after midnight in GB because it was deemed too scary to show earlier. Only Fools' B a R is classic comedy that never gets old. Look, I do enjoy watching your videos in terms of your reactions…. What is slightly annoying is how you pause at the worst times and talk over the video As someone who has watched every episode including specials and have the box set you need to understand that only fools has a joke practically every 10 seconds, it’s that full of comedy!
