Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through KZbin videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

7:23 The house was simply abiding by the highway code. They were entering into a derestriction zone (national speed limit applies) so the horse was accelerating. The horse didn't realise it was a learner driver.

I like the way your brain works. Yes breathing is creating a vacuum, or area of lower pressure, no such thing as vacuum, only absolute vacuum, everything else is pressure but below atmospheric pressure at your altitude, as my physics teacher screamed into my face! But yes when you breath in the areas around your mouth is lowered in pressure by your lungs expanding drawing the air in.

That's a myth that plays on people misidentifying Tower Bridge and the long running animosity between Brits and Americans. Just ask someone who tells you the story, when did this happen? When was Tower Bridge built? What do you mean by Americans? They don't know who bought it, or when it was, or if Tower Bridge even existed for there to be any confusion... At which point you have to wonder why they're making statements that they have zero evidence to support.

6:42 - I felt quite bad for the guy in that vid, but yes, I think it was mainly his fault. He got way too close to the horse/cart. It was obvious it could spook the horse. I do feel bad, though. It's the sort of thing that would often happen to me. ie. a seemingly innocent moment in life, turning to abject horror and embarrassment in seconds. lol

"Up the RA" is "up the Republican Army" a reference to the Irish Republican movement who fought for Irish unification during "the troubles", as in IRA or more accurately pIRA (Provisional Irish Repubican Army). Some cheeky Irish chap thought it would be funny to 'commission' Mr Farage (a prominent English Unionist to say that. And I guess it has some amusement factor to it. Waste of money if you ask me, Ireland will resolve it's future peacefully hopefully, and one way or tother that has to be a win for all Irishmen (and the rest of us).

" Up the 'RA" is in reference to the Irish Republican Army. A paramilitary/terrorist organisation that operated in Northern Ireland from the 1960s-1990s. Nigel Farage did a Cameo appearance saying it, presumably while being ignorant that that was what the phrase was referring to. Needless to say very controversial and was rightfully brought up when he tried to lecture an Irish news anchor on Anglo-Irish politics.

He has every right to lecture them on Anglo-irish politics. Making one mistake, that most people would make doesn't exclude him from that. If anything, having to use that to silence only shows they can't counter any actual point he's made.

The IRA (Irish Republican Army) were refered to as "The RA", saying "up the (insert 'team' name)" is a display of support (mostly taken from football)... A hardcore pro-English/England/Britain person proclaiming support for the IRA long after the whole situation is deemed to be over is at the very least a little out of place. A public figure making light of the situation in such a way just isn't a good look no matter what the reason or whether you apologised.

It is funny but if someone is going to take that more seriously than they should then that is their issue. Is an apology really warranted for every mistake these days? Makes apologies mean less if so.

Meme is a term that existed long before the internet. It was used to refer to a shared consciousness and (viral) spread of ideas or information. It could be applied to things like playground chants or nursery rhymes that were documented in different locations, far apart, but at almost the same time. Or the way that something like the Telegraph crossword got easier as the week went on, assumed to be because different people got different answers and then were more likely to use those words because they were current in their mind, thus all of the answers were in circulation and more likely to come to mind for people going back over the crossword to fill in their missing answers. The way certain presenters/characters catchphrases would fall in to common conversation, a brand becomes popular, a song gets sung more than others, so in some ways, even though it's more orchestrated and forced on the internet, a video or comment ("hold my beer" or "plot twist") becoming the thing that everyone's aware of is a meme.
