In Westminster Abbey, you can walk over the tombs of kings, Queens, the rich and the powerful. It is forbidden to walk on the tomb of the unknown warrior. As it should be.

The beauty of this is the unknown soldier may be west indian, Indian, australian, canadian or a kiwi, doesn't matter he was one of ours no matter what part of the commonwealth or UK he came from.

And that is a really important point. The soldier buried here in the Abby could be a son of any of the counties of the Empire whose men answered the call and went to fight. A soldier known unto God and forever honoured, as a representative of all the fallen, then, now and whilst the United Kingdom stands. We are forever grateful to those who serve.

We still have a two minute silence wherever you are at 11am on the 11th November to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. I was in a supermarket last year and a reminder went out on the tannoy just before 11am. Everything stopped (including the tills) for the next two minutes as we remembered and honoured the fallen.

The late Queen Elizabeth II's mother, also Elizabeth, laid her wedding bouquet on the grave of the Unknown Warrior as a mark of respect (her own brother had died in WW1 & was buried in France) and almost all Royal brides since then - Elizabeth, Diana, Princess of Wales, Princess Anne, Catherine, Sophie, Meghan etc - have also left their wedding bouquets there. It's a very moving place to visit.

Take a look at The Menin Gate in Ypres Belgium. It's a war memorial on which there are the names of over 50,000 men, these names are not all of the men who died just the men who had no grave, whose bodies were never found in the mud and carnage of the battlefield never to be found. 365 days a year at 8 pm there is a service to remember them.

The reason this great sacrifice will always be remembered in the Uk and Europe is because of the great loss we all suffered no one I know didn’t have a relative lost in either of the great wars. Not just in battle but at home when all our countries were bombed. We have many empty pockets of family history lost. So the world should never forget thank you for your kindness reacting to this ❤

Thak you for your respectful reaction, We call this the Unknown Warrior because we do not know if the coffin contains a Soldier Sailor or Airman as the were present in the battles on land as well. Also the train carriage that brought the coffin to London was also used to carry the coffin of Nurse Edith Cavell who was executed by the Germans foe helping wounded Allied troops /airmen. There is statue to her in central London close to Trafalgar Square RM band have their own channel on YT

The Cavell van was also used to carry the body of. Charles Fryatt, a merchant seaman executed by the German Navy. For ramming a German Submarine. His body was later moved to the UK and buried with military honours. The Cavell van has been restored to how it was transporting the Unknown Warrior. Can be seen at Bodium Station museum in Kent.

TY for your honest and respectful reaction mate, a few facts left out of the video you watched were..The Unknown Warrior was buried in soil removed from the 4 main battle fields ..he was buried with a Crusader Sword affixed to the top of his coffin personally selected by the King himself..He was buried with a Victoria Cross and Medal of Honor awarded to him by The President Of The United States with the King awarding the Unknown Soldier buried at Arlington the same honor with a Victoria Cross..he is the only tomb in Westminster Abbey that it is forbidden to walk upon..every Royal Bride married in The Abbey to this day places her Bouquet upon his grave after the Ceremony is over.. It is by law mandated he will never be identified as he represents so many who gave the ultimate sacrifice for all. The Black Marble Belgian Stone that covers the tomb is engraved with melted down brass from ammunition from the First World War. I hope that adds some extra information to the knowledge this wonderful video offered all. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘

The red poppy flower at the Tower of London and in the wreath laid on the silver drums in the Royal Albert Hall in London is the symbol of remembrance in the UK. Paper poppies are on sale in October each year for people to buy and wear and the money from those sales goes to help the families or the ex-servicemen and women returning from War. We hold what we call a Festival of Remembrance (a concert) each year on the Saturday evening before Remembrance Sunday at the Royal Albert Hall, (where you saw the Royal Marines in today's reaction) attended by the Prime Minister, high ranking members of our Government and, of course, the Royal Family. It's televised nationally. The next day, at every village, town and city around the UK, people assemble at their local War Memorial and remember those that laid down their lives for our Freedom. In London the King leads the Nation in a Service of Remembrance for those servicemen and women that died from UK and the 56 countries that make up The Commonwealth of Nations. Again it's televised nationally. We always hold a two minute silence before the Ceremony begins at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month when the Armistice was signed back in 1918. After the Ceremony ex-soldiers, sailors and airmen march past the Cenotaph in Whitehall to salute and remember those that never made it home. 10,000 marched this year and several were over 100 yrs of age. It's an emotional day for us all. Thank you for your respectful reaction. You are a fine young man. I hope you will be feeling better soon. Love from the UK

The American, French and British, unknown warriors/soldiers tombs. The soldiers in them each have their own countries highest medal and the other nations highest medal. The V.C., Medal of Honour and Legion of Honour. A couple of things it never mentioned here are some of the points that I found most emotional. They are, the coffin had a medieval sword from the Kings own, attached to it. The railway car had been used for 3 dead, 1 civilian, executed by the Germans, 1 none combatant (nurse), executed by the Germans, and of course, 1 soldier. The stone that covers the grave is black marble taken from the Belgium border, the border we went to defend and the brass inlayed inscription on the marble is brass, made of ammunition 😢 It's also the only stone in the country on which NO ONE is allowed to step. If you saw the Queens funeral. As they go into the Abbey, there are 2 black grave stones, they cross the 1st, but have to go around that one. On the memorials here, we always have the words LEST WE FORGET. One of the best ways I've ever heard it put is... Poor is the country that has NO Heroes. Poorer still, the one that has Heroes........ ..... AND FORGETS 😢 Still it goes on... sad. Sadly, the reality of war is treated so flippantly by too many. The sacrifice of others, be they soldiers, firemen... There's a really good video on KZbin about the JFK memorial in the UK. The ONLY bit of the UK that is actually American soil. It's amazing 😊 ❤ from Northeast England ❤️

Respect brother. WW1 was a traumatic event for the UK and for Europe in general - so many suffered far worse than the UK. Deaths alone: UK 2%, France 4.4%, Germany 4.3% - while small nations like Serbia suffered up to 27%. It was the loss of an entire generation, casualties we had never really experienced, the slaughter of mechanised warfare. WW1 made a much lesser impact on the US - the casualties, while horrific, came from a much larger population base (0.1%) and a much shorter war. The Unknown Warrior, Remembrance Sunday are very cathartic and was much needed to heal those wounds. The Drums often confuse people - but a "drumhead" church service was when an alter was built from them out on the battlefields.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky Scarce heard amid the guns below. The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. The larks, still bravely singing, fly We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw

Moments like this make me proud to be British. Yes we've done things I'm not proud of, but still I can be proud to belong to this great nation. It;s true that there was no social media but if you want to know more about what people recorded during WW1 read the first world war poets such as Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen who wrote about what they were going through. There were also artists who recorded some of what they saw.

Apologies lf this is already stated somewhere here. But thought some may find how the unknown warrior was chosen. I cant credit anyone for it its not my work. On November 7th, 1920, in strictest secrecy, four unidentified British bodies were exhumed from temporary battlefi goeld cemeteries at Ypres, Arras, the Asine and the Somme. None of the soldiers who did the digging were told why. The bodies were taken by field ambulance to GHQ at St-Pol-Sur-Ter Noise. Once there, the bodies were draped with the union flag. Sentries were posted and Brigadier-General Wyatt and a Colonel Gell selected one body at random. The other three were reburied. A French Honour Guard was selected and stood by the coffin overnight of the chosen soldier overnight. On the morning of the 8th November, a specially designed coffin made of oak from the grounds of Hampton Court arrived and the Unknown Warrior was placed inside. On top was placed a crusaders sword and a shield on which was inscribed: "A British Warrior who fell in the GREAT WAR 1914-1918 for King and Country". On the 9th of November, the Unknown Warrior was taken by horse-drawn carriage through Guards of Honour and the sound of tolling bells and bugle calls to the quayside. There, he was saluted by Marechal Foche and loaded onto HMS Vernon bound for Dover. The coffin stood on the deck covered in wreaths, surrounded by the French Honour Guard. Upon arrival at Dover, the Unknown Warrior was met with a nineteen gun salute - something that was normally only reserved for Field Marshals. A special train had been arranged and he was then conveyed to Victoria Station, London. He remained there overnight, and, on the morning of the 11th of November, he was finally taken to Westminster Abbey. The idea of the unknown warrior was thought of by a Padre called David Railton who had served on the front line during the Great War the union flag he had used as an altar cloth whilst at the front, was the one that had been draped over the coffin. It was his intention that all of the relatives of the 517,773 combatants whose bodies had not been identified could believe that the Unknown Warrior could very well be their lost husband, father, brother or son... THIS is the reason we wear poppies. We do not glorify war. We remember - with humility - the great and the ultimate sacrifices that were made, not just in this war, but in every war and conflict where our service personnel have fought - to ensure the liberty and freedoms that we now take for granted. Every year, on the 11th of November, we remember the Unknown Warrior. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

I don’t know if you noticed the marine who laid the wreath didn’t salute. In the UK British forces do not salute without wearing the head gear and badge, nobody. Also you’ll notice they made stack of drums in the centre. This used to be the only way religious services could be carried out on battle fields at one time by making an alter with the bandsmen’s drums it’s where the statement “a Drum Head Service” came from, on a battlefield.
