It's heartbreaking what's happening to Ireland Now... Mass immigration... and now the Government are trying to bring in Hate speech laws. In other words... if you have an opinion about what's going on... ie.. Hundreds of men housed in hotels no documentation.... Rioting.. You are called ultra right wing, racist..... Its dreadful... God help our Grandchildren... . Irish are forgotten.. Homelessness is through the roof.. Irish are at the bottom of the housing list now... But let's not discuss the Elephant in the Room🐘🤫.. Same is happening all over Europe..

Having holidayed in the Ring of Kerry in a huge RV I will say it was far more beautiful than I was expecting. We accidently came when the wildflowers were blooming so it coincided with a lot of coach tours. Though not officially so this resulted in a situation where it was advisable to travel in the same direction as the coaches on the narrow roads. I felt I was part of a salmon run. Still ended up one of my top 3 holidays due to the people, the food and the scenery. A funny story to illustrate the people. My husband wanted to go for a walk after lunch whilst I painted the bay from the RV. He left at 3 with no money at 9.30 desperate hobbling with a twisted ankle, I had just set off up a steep hill towards the reception to call the Guarda( police) as I had forgotten my phone charger, when I saw a tractor approaching with my husband waving. A red faced man said "I thought I had best bring yer man there back as he's a little the worse for wear mam", gently helped my drunken smiling husband down from the tractor, waved and drove off. Not used to seeing my husband drunk let alone weaving all over the place with a silly grin on his face I forgot to be cross. " how did you get drunk you did not have your wallet with you?" Turned out he walked through a village where a group of men invited him to watch the galic football with them in the pub. Put a hat on his head a scarf on his neck insisted on buying him rounds though he explained he had no money. Insisted he drink with them. When their team won they took him to the fish and chip shop to sop up the alcohol after he told them I was going to kill him then drove him home. " weren't the lads nice" he said as he fell in the caravanette door and promptly fell asleep where he lay.

I think the British Empire started to fade when a very small very poor country(Ireland) right next door to the greatest military might in the world fought the British to a standstill and then gained its independence in 1921. I'm sure many other countries looked at that and thought......perhaps we can do that!.....and the fuse was lit!

@@FfinityNope. Losing a constituent part of the U.K. and it’s first true colony started the downfall. India saw the start of a real pro-Independence movement, Egypt and Iraq strove for full independence and during the Chanak Crisis both South Africa and Canada declined to assist the U.K. In 1923, Canada refused to be bound by the Treaty of Lausanne and this was followed by the 1923 Imperial Conference which recognised the right of dominions to set their own foreign policy. 1919 was the absolute zenith of the British empire and it’s dismantling started almost immediately. So your version has no basis in reality. That was the death throes of something started decades earlier.

It’s not true that the potato was the only crop the Irish had to eat. It was the only crop the English overlord invaders allowed the Irish to eat. Ireland had an abundance of food shipped abroad by the English while the Irish suffered terribly, either leaving the country, taking their chances on the coffin ships or starving to death.

Scotland used to be attached to / a part of America (before at least, the last Ice Age) and through the gradual migration via the action of the Earth's tectonic plates, moved across to England where it eventually "butted up" against the top end of the Northern British Isles, causing the mountains in that vicinity to form. The lochs were carved out by the glaciers, and filled with fresh water after the glaciers melted at the end of the Ice Age. 😊❤🖖

I posted a link to probably the best travel to "tips" video for Ireland I've seen in your random recommendations. It's not near as in-depth going through area's like this is but definately a better travel tips vid than most others I've seen. Glen-da-lock not lack(not quite a ck sound but the ou is "aw" not "ah").. Also no breaks in the name.. Like Kinsale, he says like it's 2 words, speed it up to sound more natural Irish pronunciation. Brill video though a little old. It was filmed at least 20 years ago, before the smoking ban. If you can, look up Magheraroarty, fabulous scenery or Donegal airport and the surrounding area called "The Rosses", claimed to have the most scenic final approach in the world.. Not sure how true it is but it's deffinately up there. Ireland is pretty small, only a couple hundred miles long but the route up the west coast from Kerry to Donegal is over 1600 Miles (Wild Atlantic Way) I hear you on the music.. Most people hate the rainy misty day we get so often.. I love them, If you can't hear Uilleann pipes seeing the forrests and hills through the mist or watch the rain sweep in across a bay.. Love it. If ya can't enjoy Ireland in the rain, you don't desrve it on a fine day. BTW, The Blarney stone is not what they kissed. The Blarney stone is the very bottom stone, the mantle or lintle.. If you kiss the wall above the bottom stone, your just kissing a wall possibly millions of other eejits have kissed. Ireland was nearly totally forrested before men. The hills and mountains are bare like that because there are no large predators and the deer and sheep eat nearly anything that grows higher than the Heather. People love it, but it's not a Natural landscape.

The lack of trees has an easy historic explanation. From the 1500s & 1600s on, The English cut down and took the vast swathes of dense ancient Irish forests to build galleons for its navy. It’s said to have also been used to rebuild London after the Great Fire. The rebel Irish chieftains used to hide in the forests from the invaders. Thus, taking the forests to build up the English navy had a dual benefit for the English monarch. The Irish were so gutted about the deforestation of their entire county, so much so that a poem was written about it: ‘Cad a dhéanfaimid feasta gan adhmad?’ ‘How can we cope without timber? The last of the woods have been taken abroad!’ 😔

However, for "reasons" of his own, he found himself with a London-born woman, and at age six years, my (now) late Mum attended his wedding to my late Nan, somewhere in Scotland, in 1922, (when Grandad was 28/9). His politics ran as far as becoming a member of Sin Fein, but _not_ active within the IRA. He said he was born in Eire, so my Mum and I took him at his word. He eventually lived out his final years / days in S.E.London, where I was born (in 1953) prem. and caught polio aged 8 weeks whilst still in SCBU to eventually learn how to walk aged 4 years, whilst living with my Mum at my Nan & Geandad's cottage until I was 6. You did not ask for or need my potted life story, but you received part of it anyway ! "There's No Charge !!" ☺️❤️🖖

Its The Republic of Ireland. Southern Ireland was only used by the British in the 1920s for a short time. The island of Ireland is The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland the latter being part of the UK. I'm not making any political points, I'm English (British) and just want to make it clear to all your and Rick's viewers. I have good friends from both ROI and Northern Ireland so do understand the importance of making the distinction between both nations clear. 😊. Cup of tea anyone 😊. I'm not quite sure why a mention of financial aid from the European Union or even the sign saying so as Republic of Ireland is a member so will be contributing to the "fund"..

I live in the republic of ireland, but thats not my nation its an artificial statelet just as much as Northern Ireland, ireland is my nation. They are two different cultures on this island yes but the lines of the border don't neatly divide the two.You only have to look at the recent NI census 29% considered themselves irish only and 32% british only very close.Your friends from the north seem to be from the unionist tradition and the ones from the south partitionist they are fully entitled to their views and identity but they are not representative of everyone. As regards the use of southern ireland, well he is travelling in southern ireland starting off in wicklow and finishing in dingle thats firmly in the southern half of the country.Apart from the causeway coast american tourists really don't go anywhere else but the southern half, north of galway you won't see an american tourist very rarely anyway.

The country’s name is just Ireland. “Rep. of Ireland” is a descriptor of the state like “French Republic” is a descriptor of France. “Ireland” is the name lodged with the United Nations. The insistence on calling the “Republic of Ireland” comes from familiarity with the football team and with a U.K. reluctance to recognise that Ireland has a right to the name because Northern Ireland exists. But that’s akin to Irish people refusing to use “Britain” or U.K.” and insisting on calling it “the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”.

An English/Irish "hotch-potch" (though in my case, both North (Scots Irish, with some originally from Ayrshire) and South, with some from County Cork) is pretty much my own ancestry, too, Connor. While a.f.a.i.k, I wouldn't have to go back much further in one English line to find a healthy dollop of Welsh, as well. All in just the previous four or so generations, too... which re most family 'lineages' is the most I know anything about, anyway. You see, although not on the same scale as the US, especially in regions like New England, some bits of 'OLD' England have also been veritable mixing pots in still quite recent history. Some medium sized and also (relatively) "new" towns, surprisingly often in more remote areas, being very good examples for several reasons. All of which being said, I agree most with your view that you see yourself simply as an American. As I see myself as a Brit.

Isn't it funny how many Americans are in search of their European origins, like adopted children would be in search of their biological parents? It's quite understandable, though, but that human trait never ceases to astonish me. "Settlers included the Dutch of New Netherland, the Swedes and Finns of New Sweden, the English Quakers of the Province of Pennsylvania, the English Puritans of New England, the Virginian Cavaliers, the English Catholics and Protestant Nonconformists of the Province of Maryland, the "worthy poor" of the Province of Georgia, the Germans who settled the mid-Atlantic colonies, and the Ulster Scots of the Appalachian Mountains. These groups all became part of the United States when it gained its independence in 1776. Russian America and parts of New France and New Spain were also incorporated into the United States at later times." Source: Wikipedia "By the 1720's the colonies of Canada, Acadia, Hudson Bay, Newfoundland and Louisiana that made up New France were well established. In Illinois the French colonists settled in the southwestern part of the state along the Mississippi River and created the towns of Prairie du Rocher, Kaskaskia, St. Philippe, and Cahokia." Source: Wikipedia "The largest flow of German immigration to America occurred between 1820 and World War I, during which time nearly six million Germans immigrated to the United States. From 1840 to 1880, they were the largest group of immigrants." Source: Wikipedia

The Vikings were almost gone by Medieval times, they became the Normans. The guy in the video often gets history wrong. The round towers weren't built by the monks. The round towers were sacred places for the Celtic pagans and when Christians came along, they took over the holy pagan sites and built monasteries on them. Also, the monks didn't hide from the Vikings in the towers. If they did that, the Vikings would just pile wood around the tower and burn them out. At the time, Ireland was covered in thick forest and the monks would run into the forests to hide.

Rick Steve did make an error when he said Ireland was a British 'colony' during the Victorian era. Or in truth, maybe he didn't. You see, Ireland was brought into a union with Great Britain in 1801 to become the United Kingdom. So technically, all citizens of Ireland were then British subjects too. But in reality, the vast majority of the country was still treated like a colony and it's inhabitants discriminated against. It wasn't just the response from the government in Westminster to the Potato Blight but the conditions they had imposed beforehand that led to such disastrous consequences for the people.
