The reason for the ‘case for room 101’ thing is that for many years we had a tv show here called room 101, where celebs would come on and talk about things they hated before the host would say whether they went in or not I’m also so glad that Mandy spots that Ricky and Steve have totally different processing than Karl. In this and also in the ‘do you think in your accent’ you see that Ricky and Steve don’t have an internal monologue and likely can’t see images in their heads either whereas Karl can - and they ridicule him without realising it’s them that’s at a loss

Good to see Karl's weird creature make a guest appearance. Let us remember Karl's brilliantly designed animal...1. body of an armadillo, 2. head of an owl, 3. slug juice for mobility, 4. peacock feathers (because Karl says that "makes it look threatening"? 😆😂🤣)...and it lives on walls "coz that's the only way it can see properly"

You're always glowing after watching these. It's wonderful that Karl and co have brought such joy to so many people. Not even counting the 100,000 or so freaks like me who listen to XFM / Podcasts / Guides perpetually on a loop all day every day and even while we sleep, and have done for 15+ years. Don't you just want to walk around all day listening to the XFM shows while hiking or doing the washing up? I can't imagine not having them with me when I do the supermarket shopping to keep the anxiety at bay or trying to sleep without them there to distract from life's problems and worries trying to get at my worry hole.

The scientist saying "i'm working out what happens if you give feminax to an owl" reminds me of the Frankie Boyle joke: Two scientists in a room and one says "shall we have a go at curing cancer?" and the other says "you go ahead, i'm going to see how many Fruit Pastilles it takes to choke a Kestrel.." Poking fun at all those news stories of scientists doing important work which can seem like mucking about to the layman like putting monkey testicles on mice

"They can get where water can't" is a phrase we use up north to describe people who constantly turn up or sneak up surprisingly. Like a child who's suddenly under the parents feet when they thought he/she were playing out. Could also be someone who is good at accomplishing difficult tasks or an actor who takes every role etc it's quite diverse. Karl says slugs can get where water can't, Ricky asks why, Karl says they're boneless, Ricky argues that so is water. Karl wins - water can't sludge it's way up a wall and generally stays where gravity puts it.

The premise is taken from a tv show in the uk called room 101. Where the guest proposes 5 things to put into room 101. The host decides whether they get put in room 101 off of the arguments put forward by the guest. So they can’t just ‘let him put it in there as it’s his room 101’. The whole fun of the show was the guest trying to convince the host it should go in

I think Ricky and Stephen are both part of those select people that don't have an internal monologue, like most people do. That is not a bad thing on its own, but it makes it hard to empathize with others on these cognitive subjects. In any case, many of their misunderstandings with Karl stem from those differences in internal mental processes. They make fun of him for having "a dialogue with himself", without understanding that this is actually how most people think. As has actually been proven scientifically at this point. I'm sure that by now they have realized this. But when they recorded these podcasts, they were still too young and naive to understand these nuances as to how differently the brains of different people could operate. In that sense, ironically, Karl is actually more normal than those two.

My favorite part of this is how Karl mocks the idea of undirected research, Ricky tries to come up with a ridiculous example of it with owls, and then Karl immediately wants to know the results of that research. Even while trying to make fun of the idea of science "without a point", his curiosity proves its value.

What you’re saying about food in the sink being gross is essentially the argument of Mary Douglas in Purity and Danger. She suggested that what we think of as dirty is matter out of place. Hair on your head is clean. Hair in your food is dirty, etc. it’s all about things crossing the conceptual and cultural boundaries that we have established.

22:32 fun fact: I used to have to do pot wash when I worked in a kitchen and we would have to occasionally unblock all the bits of food that collected in the drain, which would involve plunging your bare arm up to the elbow in dirty water to (as we called it) 'finger the fat bird' aka use two fingers to collect it all out and allow the water to drain so we could get it all out of the empty sink. I can attest to the slug issue. My shower drain doesn't go straight into a pipe, it goes from the drain, down a pipe, into a little drain outside the house and then it's in the main plumbing pipe. Through this stupid design (which results in flooding of the garden sometimes), the slugs get in during winter and just sit around in the bathroom and kitchen.

I also completely get what Karl is saying that vocabulary helps you think. I don’t usually need the inner monologue, but when you are thinking about a complicated concept, putting a word to it can help you sort of lock that down, and move on to advance the thought. For instance, I spent a whole chapter in my MA thesis describing this phenomenon I had observed, then later realised that there was a word for it, diglossia, which helped me take the argument to the next step.

Before meeting Ricky and Stephen, Karl was a producer at XFM who by his own admission basically made jingles and little adverts for the station. He ended his career at XFM as a head of production, so I suppose he must have been doing something right, but he was constantly taking time off for vacations and made more than a few errors while working the desk as Ricky and Steve's producer. Playing the wrong song, forgetting to the play the adverts, neglecting to check if the audio levels for everyone's microphones were good, etc. Honestly, I think the only reason he got so far in that job was because of how popular he became after he started working on Ricky and Steve's radio show. About a year after they met Ricky actually asked a station head at XFM if Karl worked hard and he replied "well, he doesn't work as hard as he used to", which suggests to me that Karl stopped putting as much effort into his original job once he realized that it basically didn't matter because he was in good with Ricky.

You've outdone yourself again Mandy ... This is one of my favourites and I completely get where Karl is coming from, it frustrates me when other people don't get it ! ... This has made my birthday, seeing you laugh so much, thanks ... I don't think I've ever heard what his owl thingy is called ... And yes, wet food is gross

Thanks for this. Karl: "It makes sense!" I'm convinced. "Are you with me?" Yes, I am. "That's what I meant." I understand Karl. I understand. Mandy: "Oh no, I'm just like Karl!" I feel your pain.

I played this game years ago and I also opted to take a dictionary. Knowledge is power. I think it's good to learn especially if you're talking to yourself on a desert island. Trust in Karl.

I also hate wet food! I cant go near the dirty dishes if someone soaked their dish and there's food residue swimming around. I even hate almost all soups cuz they remind me of dirty dish water

That’s interesting. I’ve never thought about it. I can think both conceptually and through a monologue. But, those who only think through a monologue, are you stuck if you forget the word?
