On the MOT I was in America few years ago, and the person I was visiting had an almost foot-long inch crack in his car windscreen, which he said was there for some time. He seemed surprised when I told him in the UK that would automatically fail the MOT safety check and he wouldn't be able to drive it.

A cracked windscreen doesn’t necessarily mean MOT failure, depends where it is, you could technically have a crack that spans from one side to the other and it be fine.

In the uk once your car is over 3 years old if you don’t have it MOT, TAXED, INSURED it will show up on police ANPR cameras which automatically read the vehicle registration number and check it against the databases, if it sees a discrepancy the camera alerts the police driver to pull the vehicle over. After watching many of “Just Rolled In” videos of American vehicles that have been taken to dealerships for repairs I definitely think that America should have a mandatory vehicle inspection every year because wow some the vehicles you see on that and are then driven away without having any repairs done is just ridiculous.

MOT's or the equivalent are mandatory in most European countries these days. However in Germany, it's compulsory every two years, although they were always a little more stringent. This was presumably because cars have become more reliable over the years. With the reliability and build quality of US cars, it would probably be too expensive, as the checks would be required once a month!!!

Born in the states and it always amuses me how Tyler makes such generalizations that "Americans think this" and it is soooooooo not true for me or people in my area. He forgets that this country is so diverse that his "typical" isnt universal. My trips to the UK and Europe in general have changed my life. I cannot wait to move to England and make that my normal as I do agree that there are a lot that the Brits have right and I need even if the world doesnt agree. 100% on Yorkshire tea, preferably Yorkshire Gold as there is a slight difference. As someone who has lived in the states and hated tea, this changed my life and I cannot go without a cuppa anymore. British TV is also great. My favorite nights are when my friends that live in the UK stream things they see as fun but they get to experience it like new thru introducing me to the shows and movies. The tone is different and I love it.

The British Pub. Just to clear up a stereotype that I've heard other reactors saying. The stereotype is that we all finish work at 3 or 4pm and as a group traipse off to the pub, spend the evening there drinking alcohol and getting rat arsed. Some people do that, but certainly not the majority. In my experience, the majority of workers like to get home of an evening, see their family and have their evening meal, AS A FAMILY. I have known guys to get very angry with the bus driver because he couldn't get home in time to tuck his little kids up in bed and say goodnight to them. On this particular occasion, it wasn't the bus drivers fault. The traffic that evening had been a sheer farce due to roadworks in Nottingham. It doesn't take much to get Nottingham all snarled up, or Long Eaton, the town where I live.

So a National Trust pass. You can pay a monthly fee (not much, around £10) And you get access to historical buildings that wouldnt normally be accessible, and in return they repair and restore the buildings, keeping them maintained and available for future generations to experience, thus passing on that history. These places normally have lots of land and walks around them aswel, normally with beautiful gardens, woodlands and parks. Well worth the fee, as usually the price for visiting just one of these sites is around the same as your monthly fee, and you can visit as many as you like! So the only thing holding you back is how far away you want to travel

In the Netherlands we have something similar as the MOT in the UK. The test is mandatory, but a positive result is needed to be alowed on the road afterwards. The test result is communicated with the agency that registers cars. That's what the police can check. If your car is spotted on a public road and the test results weren't good, you'll get a ticket.

Yes once your car/vehicle goes in to have a mot the garage does all the relevant tests. A list of things that needs doing on the car. If they deem the car to be unroadworthy without the relevant repairs being done by law you can’t drive your car away from the garage. If it’s just small things that are not deemed hazardous you can either have that garage do the repairs. Or you can take your car to a different garage. When/if you are pulled over by the police they know by your plate who the owner is. If it’s roadworthy. If it’s insured etc etc. just by putting the licence plate number into the computer they have that’s attached to the dvla. X

MoT tests in here in Northern Ireland have always been carried out differently than in the rest of the UK. Tests in Northern Ireland are overseen by the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA), whereas the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVSA) is responsible for tests in the rest of the UK. The main difference between the two regimes is that tests in Northern Ireland UK, are carried out in government-run centres, whereas private mechanics in Britain can carry out tests. Also it’s every 4 years for cars in Northern Ireland. Cost of test is £38 , if car fails test,a re test costs £29.50. My wee mini just passed MOT and she’s almost 14 years old. I don't really care about the brand and usually just but the best level supermartket own brand ones, but coffee has be a good quality ground or fresh beans. I had no idea you didn't have the equivalent to our MOTs for cars over the pond, not sure how safe on the roads I would feel.. Mind you, as a young adult in the 80s I knew a lot of people who did up old cars and it used to be so easy for them to game the MOT system getting some dangerous stuff past the testers. Thankfully it has all been really tightened up since then although we all groan when it comes to the yearly costs. The MOT is also useful these days when it comes to buying used cars as you can look up the car via it's number plate via various websites and see all the MOTs the car has been though, helps to see what issues they might have!

Its only annoying when your vehicle fails its MOT, only because of the cost of repairs. But at the end of the day if it stops killing someone it's well worth it.

You need 4 things you need to be able to legally drive any vehicle in the UK. 1. MOT. 2. TAX. 3. INSURANCE. 4. PASS THE DRIVING TEST. Yorkshire tea is just one of many brand names of UK tea. I ONLY have " regular" TV stations on my TV. I don't subscribe to any streaming services at all. All I ever need is on FREEVIEW.

In New Zealand, vehicles 2000 and newer require a Warrant of Fitness (WoF) every 12 months, while those older than 2000 need it every 6 months. Important note: A valid WoF is mandatory for all vehicles plus you can't register your vehicle without one. (MOT) is short for Ministry of transport.

They have moved their operations to neighbouring town of Knaresborough, but for historical claims sakes they say "of Harrogate". I can hook you up with some Yorkshire Tea for you to try - for that purpose you'll have to set up PO box.

Hi Tyler - The British pub is a large extension of your living room - so you can meet with family friends or just be by yourself - but cosy welcoming and eat drink chat - maybe watch some TV, sit by a fireside etc. dogs and kids welcome in most ❤ We also have a footpath and bridle way system around the country to walk and explore which is free to access the country side and coastal paths. And loads of these walks start and finish near a good pub 😂

Classic cars over 40 years old no longer need an MOT test - but I get mine done anyway because £54 is not a lot of money to have someone do a formal check on everything - I know other owners of classic cars do the same. But we have the infrastructure - namely approved inspectors (ordinary mechanics in ordinary garages who have the equipment and have been checked and certified) doing standard checks - takes about an hour and a fixed fee - currently £54. Good system. They may give failures for things that are definitely not safe and then "advisories" for things that are not unsafe but should be looked at. You cannot do your annual car tax unless it has a valid MOT (and has valid third party inurance) - its all held on a government computer somewhere.

What surprised me in the State of Colorado was that I had to renew the Licence Plate each year. In UK it is different, in that the registration plate belongs to the car from the manufacturer, through all the owner to the day it's gone to the tip. It is illegal to change your registration plate or cover it with a different one. Rules apply naturally to the front and the rear plates....again, in the UK you should have both of them on the car. Therefore it is the MOT annual test that allows you to continue to use that car if it passes or the necessary adjustments have been carried out and checked.

All EU countries have an annual vehicle check, called differently, but in essence with same or very similar requirements. In Germany it's called a TÜV (after the name of the inspecting body, the Technischer Überprüfungs-Verein), in Austria it's called a "Pickerl", literally a sticker, because that's what you get when you pass. Those are not the official names - in Austria the official name is §57a inspection, but that's practically only used in official documents. Some states in the US also have them, but it's apparently not very well controlled or policed, so you end up with "Lick 'em & Stick 'em" workshops that will give you one if you pay them. Over here it's much more strict, inspection really means something. In Germany, the TÜV's only business are technical checks, they don't have any other motives. They don't offer repairs and they have no incentive to accept bribes. In Austria being able to do the inspection is a valuable asset for the workshops, and they are very careful not to lose it. They are subject to tests by the government, and if they are discovered to have awarded the Pickerl to a car that doesn't fulfil the requirements, they'll be fined and lose their inspection licence. It can suck sometimes. Often, not being able to pass an inspection is a death knell for a car if it can't be repaired economically. But on the whole, our rolling stock is at a high technical standard, and we don't have the rusted out deathtraps rolling around here.

As a former mechanic I can say that a huge portion of the public completely neglected their cars. A scary number of cars have dangerous tyres, defective brakes, worn or broken suspension components, well overdue on services and therefore inspections...etc. The MOT is often the only time these issues are flagged and owners are forced to rectify these issues. If you had seen the condition of some of the cars we've seen fail the MOT tests you'd be shocked 😅 especially knowing they're out there on the same road as you, just waiting for one emergency manoeuvre to highlight all of the weak links in their ca, as they pile drive you into a tree.

I live in Sweden and we have the same rules for what the British call MOT, If it's a factory new car you have to have it checked after 3 years, after the first inspection the second must be done after 2 years, and after that it's a yearly inspection (or rather every 14 month, so you have a 2 month grace period). I think this is very common in Europe as a whole, so it's not specific to the UK. I know it must be done in all the Nordic countries, Germany, Poland, Austria, Croatia, and of course the UK. National parks in Sweden is free to visit, we have the Freedom to Roam, we can go anywhere at any time, not in someone's backyard but we're free to go into any forest, even privately owned forests, pick berries, and mushrooms, and even put up a tent for the night. We can swim in any lake, if a farmer grows crops near a lake they are required to leave a path beside the crops so anyone can get to the water. Since the freedom to roam, and go anywhere within the country is part of our constitution, is the main reason why we couldn't have a lockdown during the pandemic. I apologize that my comment is about Sweden in a video that is about the UK. It's just didn't think they were that specific to the British island. The country side can be beautiful in all countries, even though it's not really a tourist destination anywhere.

If you've ever tried tea made in a US or sadly Canadian restaurant or cafe, you'll understand why tea is not popular there. Tea is made by pouring hot, NOT boiling water, into an ice cold metal pot and taken to you with a tiny tea bag sitting on the side, for you to put into the now warm water to make your cuppa. I am a tea drinker living in Canada and I never have tea out. Canadians who will still drink the tea here or in the US, have to remember that in the US, they have to ask for 'hot tea' as ordering just 'tea' will get you that icey stuff!

My top 10 what the Whole World needs that only the UK has: 1. The Data Protection Act. (If anyone discloses/shares anyone's private data without permission (includes doxing), they will be sued into oblivion). 2. The NHS (it's not perfect, but having a checkup/trip to the hospital/having any type of surgery (including dental) doesn't brake the bank/budget or makes you homeless) including the 3% tax from your income that pays for it (Thus No Health Insurance costs/need). 3. Tax included in all of the prices: what you see on the Price label is what you pay. 4. The PAYE system. (Employees don't have to fill in complicated TAX forms every year) 5. British Sockets and Plugs. 6. Roundabouts on 90% of all T junctions and 100% of all cross roads. 7. The High Street (All Towns have one somewhere). 8. GCSE's. 9. No Aluminum Florid in the water supply. 10. Household Waste Recycling Centers in every city. (Take all of your non-commercial waste and have it recycled).

1. This came from EU ruling so other countries have it 2. Only we have the NHS; but lots of countries in Europe have a version of social healthcare provision 3. not just UK 4. ditto 5. ok yes to that as UK only 6. Only if you live in a 1960s /70s 'New Town' who embraced the roundabout for every opportunity esp the mini form. And Roundabouts exist in other countries 7. The High Street = Main street USA. It is normal to have gathered part of a community where business happens. 8. Not sure on this one, we do have exams at 16 and again at 18. Largely based on the idea of leaving school at 16 after those exams, and the next 2 years as voluntary for the higher qualification, and that we specialise in the A level years (or NVQs etc) Some other countries expect a full range of core subjects up to 18. 9. take your word on that 10. There are certainly other European countries that have better recycling provision than UK; and here it can vary across different local authorities
