There are convenience stores and service stations (you'd call them "gas stations") which are indeed open 24/7. Nightclubs have to close early - this law was introduced in an attempt to curb violence. That doesn't bother me personally, as I could not be forced to go to a nightclub at gunpoint One of my local supermarkets (within walking distance) is open till 7 pm on weekdays and till 5pm on weekdays. It opens at 7:30 am except on Sundays, when it opens at 11am. The other local supermarket is open from 7:30 am to 9pm *every day*. Road fatalities have dropped massively since the 1960s when compulsory seat belt wearing was introduced. Also not long afterwards a maxiumum 0.5 blood alcohol limit was introduced. In city areas road rage is becoming a bit more common, which is probably largely related to traffic densities. I remember when our state would have 2000 killed on the roads in the year, whereas now it is more like 350. I have driven in the UK, though not in London, Birmingham or Manchester. I have driven in Nottingham, York and London suburbs. I wouldn't say that driving in those conditions is much different from driving in Sydney, except that there are a lot more narrow roads -- more like Sydney's inner suburbs. Country roads can be a speeding temptation. The road from Robinvale in Victoria to Balranald in New South Wales is some 80km long, of which about 60km is dead straight. From Balranald to Hay is another 130km of almost straight road. Both roads have very little rose and fall, no roadside housing, few trees. Only the speedometer tells you how fast you are going. The limit is, from memory, 110, but I kept having to slow from 130 or 140, and even hit 160 once. The problem is closing on a semitrailer at 250 kph and maybe losing attention... Mental health services are fairly good in cities, but poor in rural areas. However things could be a lot better. Our church had a drop in centre largely for people with mental health issues, many of whom lived in boarding houses, where they were sent out with a few dollars first thing in the morning and not allowed back in until evening. We gave them a place to come for coffee, biscuits and a place to be accepted. After our church started this a couple of other churches also set up drop in centres, which gave people more options. Not a particularly reliable account of Australian life.

Hello! Australian here! 1) I'm glad that we have strict rules on drink driving and stuff like that. We have a big drinking culture in Australia and I don't understand why having a strict legal system is a bad thing. Things like drink driving should absolutely be cracked down on because its irresponsible, dangerous and theres no excuse for it. Of course there has been the long time issue of systematic racism and the horrible treatment of Aboriginal people at the hands of the legal system in Australia which absolutely should be investigated and stopped 2) Theres certain methods that make driving in the country easier and safer and people who didn't grow up in the country aren't usually well versed which is how accidents happen. I grew up in Perth where we are extremely bad at merging but my parents grew up in the country so they have taught me about safe country driving. The service that you're thinking of is the Royal Flying Doctor which helps people living in rural areas. Our system of getting a liscense is different than in America and in my opinion our method is safer since you have the different stages you have to go through before you get your official license but I can understand the bad driving, especially in rural areas or merging in Perth 😅 3) I think people vastly overestimate the dangerous animals here in oz. In the country there is definately a higher chance of seeing dangerous animals such as snakes but most people visit major cities where there are actually very few dangerous animals. If you know about what animals live in which parts, what to do if you see one and what to do if you have a negative experience with one, then its safer than you think. Unless you are in the ass crack of the desert, in the country or in certain parts of the ocean, then the risk isn't that high. We also are very good with things such as antivenoms or other first aid for the wildlife here so I promise that you don't need to worry about much if you visit Australia. That spider in the corner is mostly harmless and snakes are more scared of you then you are of them so you can scare them away by stomping your feet. Locals living in major cities have probably seen as many dangerous animals as you have. At least they are fun to brag about. Thats just my opinion, as a random Australian teenager. This video gives me weird vibes, idk , but I love watching you and listening to your input on the content you watch. I love viewing Australia through an outsider's perspective and I even learn things about my own country. I love watching you, you seem like a down to earth, relatable guy who is entertaining and also informative. ❤

I think the penalties for drink driving are far too soft. I remember about 40 years ago when I was in a Magistrates Court, not for anything to do with driving, and in a case before mine the Police were opposing a previous drink-driver having his licence re-instated. The police had gone to the man's house two weeks before that hearing and were legally able to search his house for alcohol. The guy had slabs of beer, Jim Beam and Coke, cartons of wine etc. The magistrate suspended his licence for a further 6 months. I don't think that it would happen today.

A really well thought out comment. I think it's the responsible thing to have strict driving rules. The roads are shared so it has to be heavily regulated. Growing up in the country, I lost a couple of friends to the road. I've been having an online "discussion" with an American (who now lives here) who disagrees with all of our road rules and I just don't understand it. If you break the law, tough! Don't do it and you won't be fined. It's pretty simple really.

What Americans probably don't understand is that Australia has only has a population of about 25.7 million people spread across a country of 2.989 million square miles compared to the USA 335 million people over 3.797 million square miles. There are vast areas of nothing that can only get satellite internet coverage. But here the government has paid for the infrastructure and the Nation Broadband Network is government owned. In 2022, the government allocated AU$2.4 billion to rebuild the optic fibre network to extend it directly to another 1.5 million homes not just a local node. The fibre roll out is free and you only have to pay for the monthly connection of your choice to a service provider. In remote areas, the government is paying for the satellite connections for communities.

I have had OS visitors say they might do a drive to Uluru for the weekend. I have had to explain how far it really is. Another thought we could pick her up from Sydney airport when I live in Brisbane, about a 10-11 hour drive each way.

I came to Aus. around 1967, my family are Welsh. For holidays my dad would rent a car and we would go on day trips around UK. When we came to Aus., on seeing a picture of Uluru (then known as Ayres Rock), he promised me we would go on a day trip there. We never got there. We had no idea how big this country is. Well we knew in our heads, but it’s not until you start driving around that you REALLY know.

I think KZbin is exempt from the social media ban and you get to keep your under 16 subs. Some of these supposed reasons range from ridiculously over-exaggerated to basically being not true.
@lynefrances726Ай бұрын
It's not passed into law yet. Albos sulking because he failed again with his Disinformation bill.
@mitzee8621Ай бұрын
Do we know if KZbin is actually going to be exempt? Because it seems to fit the definition they have of an age restricted social media platform. I know it allows the Minister to add additional conditions to narrow the scope or to specify an electronic service to be an age restricted social media platform. But I don't see anything giving them the power to specifically make something exempt that would otherwise satisfy the definition. I'm no lawyer so maybe there is actually a winning argument that KZbin doesn't make interaction a significant purpose of the platform. 16. Subsection 63C(1) provides than an electronic service is an age-restricted social media platform if it meets the following conditions: a. the sole purpose, or a significant purpose, of the service is to enable online social interaction between 2 or more end-users; b. the service allows end-users to link to, or interact with, some or all of the other end-users; and c. the service allows end-users to post material on the service. 19. Subsection 63C(1) adapts the definition of social media service at section 13 of the Online Safety Act, with a modification to the ‘sole or primary purpose of the service’ test. The effect is that the scope of ‘age-restricted social media platform’ is wider than ‘social media service’. This is made clear by the note under this provision which provides that an age-restricted social media platform may be, but is not necessarily, a social media service under section 13.

Kids are clever they will just open a new account with a legal birthdate to appear greater than 16. Teaching them to be critical viewers of social media would have been much better and more effective….but that would have meant the government would have had to commit money. So they pass a stupid law with the appearance of doing something.
@mitzee8621Ай бұрын
@@robync7358 They can only open a new account if they use a VPN to have their account in a region outside of Australia. It's not quite as simple as just creating a new account with a different birthdate. When the bill takes effect in 2 years, creating an account from within Australia will require an age-restricted social media platform provider to implement "reasonable steps" to prevent under 16's from having an account. The bill says it's expected that reasonable steps means at a minimum implementing some form of age assurance. Likely providing some form of ID so the company can verify the users age. All Australian users will have to do this mind, it's just that if your ID says your under 16 the company has to prevent you from having an account or be fined a minimum of $9.9 million. I think it's stupid as well, as using a VPN is extremely simple this days and the government has just helped the VPN industry out by forcing the under 16 population of Australia to use a VPN in order to use social media. All that and it means all Australians will likely have to start providing their ID when registering for an online service that counts as an "age restricted social media platform". Also I'm not even sure how much it's about money, don't forgot the government agreed to give half a billion in funding to some other initiatives to convince greens senators (or was it coalition I can't remember) to vote for the bill. Surely that half a billion could have gone to a campaign for educating kids about the risks of social media instead.

Australia and New Zealand have a reciprocal on almost everything. No visa required, the same health benefits are provided, even unemployment benefits are provided. The two counties essentially operate as almost the same countires.
@michellewest3404Ай бұрын
Not entirely true any more (since about 2001). New Zealand citizens have always needed a visa to come to Australia (it's called a "Special Category Visa"), it's just that they don't need to make an application and it's automatically granted when you arrive unless there's a problem like you have a long criminal history. Most people don't even know they have it. They also don't get all the benefits of being a citizen (like they can only get JobSeeker through Centrelink for six months), which is why many New Zealanders go through all the hassel to get Australian citizenship.

What allot of crock. Don't take this seriously. I'm from Ipswich Queensland, and have seen many changes over the years. In the 70's shops were open to 5, weekdays and 12 on Saturdays; not open Sundays. Today most large supermarkets close at 9pm, weekdays and 6, Saturdays and Sundays. Some smaller grocery stores have free longer hours. We do have floods and heat waves. So much of this content, you are watching is not applicable. Dangerous animals are in specific places. I'm not sure that this person has no actual experience. Actually, the shops can stay open as late as they like. There is no regulation stopping them. The real reason is that hourly penalty rates kick in so staff must be paid time and half up until 10pm and then double time after that. So wage cost is the main reason. If the store gets enough business that warrants staying open even with the higher costs, they will. I have seen a few of that guys videos and he gets quite a lot wrong.

@michellewest3404Ай бұрын
The most common reason is there is just not enough customers to make it profitable to stay open later. With a lower population density compared to most countries, and people not being use to places being open 24 hours, it just doesn't work. When I lived in Canberra my local shopping centre (a Westfield with the usual supermarkets, stores like Myer and K Mart, plus lots of speciality stores) tried opening all night, it didn't work. While it was convenient for shoppers they found the had the same number of customers spending the same amount of money just spread over a much longer time. Not financially viable.

Australia can be a daunting or even aversive place for some, and not all travelers' reviews are wholly favourable. The British writer D.H.Lawrence, who lived here for a while in the 1920s, complained that the trees shed their bark, not their leaves, the birdlife doesn't sing, but shrieks, screeches and guffaws, and the intense southern hemisphere sunlight is a foretaste of the wrath of God for anyone emerging with a morning hangover (which he apparently did on most days during his residency). Half a century later the American futurologist Herman Kahn ("futurology" being the lucrative shtick of quite a number of B-list public intellectuals of that era) opined that it must be having to walk around upside-down all day that makes the human population of Australia all bone from the neck up. And more recently, none other than the great Salman Rushdie has characterised my home town of Adelaide, which presents on the surface as Australia's most prim, proper and Protestant city, as the bizarre sex-murder capital of the world. So visitors beware!

That bit about Australia having more extreme weather conditions is just ridiculous. For instance the yearly maximum temperature for New York can be up to 40 degC and the minimum can be as low as -40 degC. No city in Australia has such a wide yearly range between its maximum and minimum temperatures. Some of the Australian cities can experience max. Summer temperatures in the low 40s but very few ever experience snowfalls, even Melbourne rarely experiences snow falling in a couple of its outer suburbs up in the hills and that snow rarely lasts a full day. As far as overseas travel goes Australia is closer to the South Pacific Islands than most of America, it is also closer to SE Asia, India and even Japan. Also the time zones of Japan and most Asian countries are not too different to Australian time zones so there would be little disruption to the body clock when travelling to and from these destinations. Australia is probably in the Goldilocks zone as far as isolation and international travel is concerned. Being surrounded by large bodies of water, oceans and seas, Australia has only a minor illegal immigration problem and a rather simple to implement customs and border control regime, but general international travel and import or export shipping is not a major problem for most people, maybe just a bit more expensive and more time consuming than for people in most other nations. Australian territories extend out quite far out into the Pacific Ocean, and into about the middle of the Indian Ocean so its range of time zones covered could well be greater than that of America even with Hawaii and it's Pacific territories included.

Because of this difference in rotation, they cannot cross the Equator.

The early settlers built towns on fertile soil beside rivers, unwittingly on the floodplains. Naturally, once rivers fill with monsoon rains and runoff upstream, the narrow rivers break their banks and flow onto the floodplains. All the paved roadways and built up areas prevent floodwaters from sinking into the ground so they flow along streets and into buildings. This is part of the heritage from Britain, which has different land and waterway issues. It doesn’t work here in Oz.
