I am an Itallian living in London, and I can tell you that isn't raining that much and the rain is polite too, 😊 it rains at night or just for one hour, then stops, and it's hardly ever heavy, just a drizzle. Also the beauty of London is in the fact that is that multicultural, that is a peculiarity that you will find only here and it is part of the London culture, their heritage is so strong that they aren't scare of inviting in other culture and embracing them, that is what makes London current, relevant, forever young and vibrant. It feels like history is also now, it keeps adding to the past. London is not one of those towns stuck in the past, it's evolving, moving, changing, adding new to the centuries old stuff and the new stuff is just as interesting and as relevant as the old one. It's simple: Only police officers authorised to carry firearms will patrol with them. Authorised Firearms Officers (AFOs) go through additional specialist training (including a medical training course) and have to re-qualify regularly. Given that they make up a small number of the total police service they are well armed with a combination of carbines (typically H&C G36s), side arms (usually Glock 17s), tasers, ballistic protection including shields and a large trauma pack. Additionally, they will patrol in a specialist Armed Response Vehicles (ARVs) which in London are typically based on BMW SUVs. In other parts of the country they may be high-powered Audi A6s or BMW 5 series, etc. In rural parts of the country, ARVs are often tasked with other duties such as traffic police as the officers would be under utilised given that gun crime is sooooo rare!

These include, Ireland, Malta, India, Pakistan, Japan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Cyprus, Thailand, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Guyana and even the US Virgin Islands. So once and for all, please stop with the driving on the left comments. Even if only 10% of them are having a pint of beer once per day thats over a million people having a drink every day. Pubs are actually closing down completely because most British people are drinking less. London can lay a reasonable claim to being one of the greatest entertainment capitals of the world. Londoners themselves, if someone isn't already really busy or on their way for an appointment, they will stop to help you. If it's Rush Hour (7:30am to 9:30am and 4:40pm to 6:30pm) don't expect people to be that helpful in all circumstances. Read the person - Do they look rushed and busy? Yes? Don't stop them. Be prepared for someone to not know the answer, not every English speaker is from London. No guns means criminals are less likely (some criminals still do, but they are rare) to have guns, and so cops don't have to be armed, and committing crime without a gun gets less time in prison. it's a virtuous circle. We do have trained firearms officers and they do guard high security areas, like Downing Street, Parliament and Heathrow etc. Firearms officers in London can react within 10 minutes to a firearms related incident. If you commit a crime with any lethal weapon in your hand, be prepared to be shot by a firearms officer.

Regarding pub hours, the Licensing Act 2005 allowed pubs to set their own hours within reason. Basically, they can write their own licence and it's then approved, amended or there's a request to resubmit. Initially many pubs opened quite late, until midnight, 1am or 2am, but demand obviously wasn't there and residents near pubs didn't like the new hours. Many but not all pubs have reverted to the traditional hours of 11am-11pm. But some places still open late and quite a few open an extra hour on Fridays and Saturdays. In the country as a whole there are some 24/7/365 licences. One place you can find them in London is at casinos. You can walk into most casinos and the only check will be that you're over 18. You don't need to gamble and you can just go in for a drink and/or a meal. Many casinos have very pleasant restaurants offering relatively good food at affordable prices.

The pound has always historically been a larger amount than the dollar. Basically, when the Gold Standard existed, the US dollar was 1.5 grams of gold. While the British pound was one pound, in weight, of sterling (pure) silver - and, yes, that's why the currency is called "the pound" and, on international money markets, it's "the pound sterling". Also, the currency symbol - £ - is derived from a cursive capital "L", which stands for "Libra", the Latin word for "pound in weight". Because it's derived from being a pound, in weight, of pure silver. So it's abbreviated "the pound" or "pound sterling". Whilst, of course, neither the US or the UK use the Gold Standard anymore - it's all fiat currency and the exchange rate goes up and down - these were their starting points under the Gold Standard and though silver is worth less than gold, a pound in weight is way more than only 1.5 grams. So it balances out, but the pound has always been, historically, a bigger unit of money. Mind you, the whole point of exchange rates is to equate one to the other, so you're not losing any money. But, yes, when you see the big number in dollars go down to a smaller number in pounds, it doesn't feel like you're winning from the exchange. But the pound is, historically, a larger unit, so that's why. Nah, the real killer is just the prices in the shops. Interestingly, you'll find food is significantly cheaper in the UK - Even Erdinger did a price comparison for a typical supermarket shop on his KZbin channel and the UK basically won on all counts, sometimes massively so - but other things, like electronic goods, will cost you more. Indeed, in the UK, we often talk about "rip-off Britain" as we all know that we get charged an extra "premium" compared to our European counterparts. Swings and roundabouts, basically. Overall, it roughly balances out, I guess.

Londoners don't drink all day! They are at work. That's tourists doing all the day time drinking. Most Londoners drink after work so maybe from 6pm..... and not every day. I'd say Thursdays and Fridays are the most popular. Any other day it's tourists. Maybe it's me but really I think this idea that we drink a huge amount is somewhat overdone here. It just doesn't ring true. And the after work drinkers won't all be drinking to 11pm. Many will go home much earlier. Honestly we have homes to go to and families too!!

This was a delightful reaction. Thanks. I am an 86 year old Australian. When I visited New York on my way home from teaching for a year in a London University I spent a few wonderful days in NY. One early evening I needed to go somewhere from our off-Broadway hotel. I quickly realized I was lost and did what any English or Australian citizen would do - I approached and asked a NY mounted police officer the way. After some initial concern he pleasantly guided me. Twenty minutes later as I crossed Broadway again the same officer accosted me.. This time I was more concerned, but he asked me If I was a "Limey' and if I had a Jubilee florin as he was a coin collector. If ever had a negative view of the NY cop it was dispelled then. Not so different from the Pommie or Aussie cop.

Great reaction. I was surprised that you were shocked that the museums are free. I'm pretty sure all museums (and maybe art galleries too but I'm not 100% about that) are free in the UK. Is this not the case in other countries? Museums do generally have places where you can voluntarily donate money if you wish. Some years ago there was talk of arming all police, but the overwhelming majority of police officers did not want to be armed - if you arm the cops, then the criminals will start arming themselves too. We do have armed response units though - they are typically called out to situations where there are deadly weapons and terrorist threats. These are highly trained marksmen and they use automatic weapons. Smart criminals immediately give up when the armed police turn up, because they know the firearms unit shoot to kill - they don't mess around! In the US, its so easy for people to buy guns that your police have to carry firearms too.

The 'look right' on the road isn't just for tourists, sometimes busses drive in the 'wrong direction' because a bus lane might run counter to the traffic. In the UK if you don't like the weather, you wait for 10 mins. Drinking, we are allowed to drink in our own homes from 5 (yep not a typo) from 16 you can have a wine, beer or cider with a meal as long as an adult buys it. From 18 you can buy your own.
@barrysteven59648 ай бұрын
The thing about guns here is that there is no real gun culture. There is no general interest or fascination. As so few people have guns, people in general don't feel the need to buy them to protect themselves. So no vicious circle of ownership. To be clear to Americans about our gun laws though. It is not true that all guns are banned in the UK. Small hand guns are banned and large automatic rifles and assault weapons are also banned. But normal shot guns and rifles are legal. But you must get a license to own them from the police who will check why you need a gun (hunting, farming related needs, sports), where you will keep them and check your background for criminal records and mental health history. They can remove your license and guns at any point. Britain was traumatised by the Dunblane school massacre in 1996 and our strict gun laws have never been an issue for debate since. And we have never had a school shooting since either. I read a sad comment once that the gun debate in the USA was over really after Sandy Hook when America seemed to decide it was OK with its children being killed.

Well, if you go to St Paul's and wait for a number 14 bus you will be waiting till kingdom come. I know, because of living in south west London. It starts in Russell Square, but does not go past the law courts but IS an easy route for the British Museum. After that it goes through Cambridge Circus and down Shaftesbury Avenue to Piccadilly Circus. It doesn't go through Trafalgar Square, therefore doesn't go by the National Art Gallery. It does go past the end of Old Bond Street but as Liberty is not situated there, but off Regent's Street, a couple of minutes from Oxford Circus, you'd have quite of a slog getting there. The rest of the route you describe is correct, but don't forget that the bus also goes past Chelsea Football Club and passes the starting point for the Oxford v Cambridge rowing event in Putney before ending at Putney Heath (near where I live), which is the start of a glorious swathe of parkland that extends all the way to Wimbledon Village, great for countryside walkers. Of added interest to film buffs is that if you get off at the stop called Putney Bridge, you can see the church and riverbank (in Bishop's Park on the north bank of the Thames) that was used in the original Omen movie.
