Protecting bees is quickly becoming a very important part of saving the planet and saving our species as well, since if the bees are gone, everything will slowly but surely start going too - the bees are by far the most important polinators of all sorts of plants - fruits, veggies, crops, etc. It is a well known fact that bees have been steadily declining in numbers all over the world and it is very important to get them back "on track" as there are multiple types of wild bees, but these are just as important if not more than normal "farmed" bees. I belive there are buildings in London for example, bigger buildings as well, that have beehives on their roofs with small gardens (and parks in their surroundings) and this way they are also trying to allow populations of bees to be healthy and slow down their diminishing . The Bee bricks are mostly to ensure the survival of the insect over the winter. Bees are super important pollinators of plants and crops, their numbers have been declining over the years. The Bee bricks don't go deep inside the building so you can't end up with a giant nest in your wall. The bees and other insects will climb into a hole before winter and usually barricade themselves inside with a mud cap. They'll re-emerge in the spring after hibernating and go off elsewhere to build a nest. Its all part of preserving the habitat that we destroy by building acres of new housing estates. (Much needed housing, but still a shame to see the countryside flattened for a shoddily built "affordable" new housing estate)

After the Dunblane massacre in 1996 the UK introduced a total ban on handgun ownership in 1997. Since then knife crime has steadily increased. We now have some of the strictest knife laws in the world. No locking knives can be carried in public, OTF knives and switch blades are illegal to even own and only knives with a blade under 3 inches long can be carried in public. You can still be arrested if the police suspect you don't have a genuine reason for carrying one. If you were to tell police "I'm carrying it for self defence" you'll definitely be arrested and charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

as for that fire hydrant, that road has been resurfaced and the contractor who did it failed to set the manhole correctly, so lose asphalt entered the hole when the when it was resurfaced, hence the fireman digging out the lose asphalt, as normally its just a case of flipping the cover, screwing in the standpipe, and opening the valve with the valve-key (the fatter pipe with the T top is the stand-pipe, the thinner long bar is the valve key, the bar the fireman is using digging at first is the handle that slides into the to of the valve key to turn it, that also doubles as the prybar to open the manhole) in other words this is a very atypical example representing a worst case, rather than the norm.

UK fire hydrants are usually underground to prevent them freezing in the winter, and to stop them getting damaged. They are in a brick lined pit usually about 30-50 cm deep, covered with a removable metal plate. The pits should be regularly cleaned and maintained, but sometimes, they can get silted up with grit washed from the road. This is when they need digging out, but it is not usual. Some large industrial plants, with a significant risk, such as oil refineries, have American style surface mounted hydrants.

Great video as always. A couple of things: 1. Mash and tinned tomatoes is not some kind of traditional UK dish. 2. Knife crime is an increasing issue in many UK cities. As you mentioned, with guns less readily available, people turn to knives instead. 3. Bees are vital to the environment and food production via pollination. Decreasing places for them to live together with increase use of pesticides which kill them have lowered the number of bees to dangerous levels. It's a very serious issue.

The fire hydrant one show's a severe lack of maintenance and inspection. The fire brigade would normally have all the hydrants in their area opened up cleaned and checked on a regular basis. So its just a case of opening the cover removing the cap and screwing on the stand pipe. With the amount of time the fireman spent digging out the dirt id say that one hadn't been opened for at least a decade. Even with all that he had it set up and ready to go before the rest of the crew were finished unpacking their gear and the engine carries a supply of water to start initial operations while they're sorting out a resupply from the hydrant. This system saves money on infrastructure because each engine carries their hydrant with them and prevents kids messing with the supply and waisting water because you can't access it without the correct tools.

@@edelgyn2699 I never said maintenance I said inspection and testing. And just because it was not officially their responsibility wouldn't stop diligent professionals from ensuring equipment their lives might depend on worked. Firemen regularly carry out fire safety inspections on businesses and even private property on request. This not only helps ensure public safety but helps them by making sure they are familiar with building layouts and safety equipment in important locations in the event of an emergency. As a kid I distinctly remember firemen regularly going around opening up hydrants and testing them.

Tyler, I’m with you with wasps and hornets but we have lots of non-stinging bees here in the UK and they’re really important for the environment and they’re on the decline. Many people have ‘bee and insect hotels’ in their gardens to give them safe havens. Even stinging bees are generally not aggressive like wasps and hornets and will only sting if threatened. I’ve picked up many bumblebees with my bare hands to put them out of harms way. As for the knives, it’s a big issue that seems to mainly be in the younger generation, it’s been particularly bad last week in Birmingham with at least 4 incidents. It’s horrible.

Not so fun fact, sometimes a bee will get drunk on the job and be unable to return home. If I remember, it's either after the first frost or the first heatwave. Something along those lines. What I do remember is that if she sobers up a little and finds her way back home, she will be removed from the hive permanently, and probably quite painfully. Unless you're gonna bathe them, put them through rehab, and make sure she stays on program, the kindest thing for a stumbling bee is probably the boot.

It's a wonderful family day out, with great walks. The donation boxes for the knives were also made by the British Ironworks. I only know about this because I used to live about 3 miles from there, before coming to the USA. Also, here in Arizona we have a large grocery chain called Fry's and they have a very small section selling UK goods. I bought Ribena and Aero from there the other day lol.

Knife crime is an issue in some parts of the UK but to a lesser extent than gun crime is in the USA. We take the view that although knives are much more easily accessible, by and large you shouldn't be carrying one without a good reason - not even a pocket knife in many cases, so possession, especially where it could be used to commit crime can be an offence. This, like gun control measures is very different to America where even switchblades can be legally carried. These and locking knives are banned here. Amnesty boxes aren't exactly common but do pop up in certain places or at certain events That video of a fire hydrant needing to be uncovered is unusual - even below ground they are easily accessed by firefighters usually. Lift a flap, spin the pipe on and turn the tap. Above ground, in many streets they would be a trip hazard for pedestrians, or for vehicles on our narrower roads, and there will always be some scrote that finds a way to urn it on and flood the place! Those benches are to deter rough sleeping

The American gun-nuts were gleefully saying "see, that's what happens when you ban guns." Re the fire hydrants - the hoses are deployed first from the fire tender (engine) in moments. The hydrants are used to feed water to the tender and keep it topped up whilst it's fighting the fire, and are coupled after the hoses are deployed - hence the time lapse. I think the US works in a similar way - first connect the hose to the Pump (tender/engine) and begin to fight the fire, once underway, the engine is connected to the replenishment supply from the hydrant.
