Robbie Robertson, also from Ontario, who had indigenous ancestry was their main composer and also wrote musical scores for movies. All of the members were Canadian except Levon Helm, the drummer. That thing about not being independent until 1982 is a bit of a stretch. It is technically true that all Canadian legislation had to be signed off on by the monarchy's representative, the Governor General (called royal assent), but since 1931, the Governor General's appointment became based on the direction of the elected prime minister and the "royal assent" became effectively a rubber stamp only.(It is technically still required to this day, but it doesn't mean that Canada isn't independent or can't write its own laws without the approval of the monarch.) In fact, it is probably most accurate to say that it was the passing of the Statute of Westminster in the UK Parliament in 1931 that made Canada independent in the most important sense. From 1867 to 1931, Canada was considered "self-governing" but laws passed in Canada were subject to being overturned by the UK Parliament. After that, the legislation passed by the local government was no longer subject to that. (Technically, ally, until 1949, Supreme Court of Canada decisions could be appealed to a UK court called the Judicial Court of the Privy Council (JCPC) and the determination of whether a law was unconstitutional was determined by applying the UK Constitution because we didnt have our own, but after 1931, the UK would not actively intervene in the legislative process and Canada (as well as Australia and New Zealand) were no longer obliged to use the JCPC as the court of final determination and could choose to have their own Supreme Court determine the constituionality of laws. Effectively, this meant that if Canada chose to stop allowing constituional referrals to the JCPC (as it ultimately did), then Canada's constitution wpuld start to differ from the UK Constitution as chalenges were decided to the extent that the Constituion in Canada was then a combination of the BNA act of 1867, the UK Constitutionnas it existed anad had been interpreted by the UK courts up until then, as well as the juidicial interpretations of Canadian Courts regarding constitutionalbm questions after 1931, that may gave differed from decisions reached in the UK high courts. Technically, we could have "passed" our own constitution anytime after 1931, it just took us until 1982 to get it done. However, I would suggest that it was the ability to pass our own constitution that made us independent and the actual act of doing so just meant that we had decided to officially stop borrowing the UKs constitution to determine the scope of our government's authority to pass laws and determine the limits of of our rights and freedoms. This was arguably necessary as well because there was actually a growing tension in legal circles regarding the status of certain legislation that the Canadian government had passed such as the 1960 Canadian Bill of Rights in terms of whether it had the status of a constitutional document and although we had arguably already created our own constitution as I mentioned above (in terms of being something different than the UK Constitution to the extent of how they had diverged since 1931 based on the intepretations of their respective courts), there was a lot of politics around challenges to things like abortion rights, french language laws, Sunday shopping laws, and other matters where the status of the bill of rights as constitutional vs. "mere statute" made it clear that we needed to affirmatively create a document that would be defined as the constitution to clean up the mess.

Kids write to Santa Claus with the H0H 0H0 postal code, and volunteers from the postal service answer every one of those letters every year and, at no cost, kids can send their Santa letters and they will receive a reply. Fun fact. H0H 0H0 is a Montreal postal code. "H" is the prefix for Montreal, though "H0" is not one that's assigned to a specific part of Montreal. If you're curious how poutine is pronounced in Quebec, the closest would be to say "puts-inn", as in "he puts in the cheese". It's the way it's said in French. In Quebec, there are many words that English locals will use the french pronunciation for, and poutine is one of those words. Other examples would be "Pie-IX" is pronounced "Pee nuf", "Begin" as a street name is "Beh-shjay" comes close (the exact sound doesn't exist in English). How proper nouns are pronounced is the easiest ways locals can tell who is a local anglophone (English as a first language) and who is a tourist.

I don't know about Caesars being our national drink, but it is popular and dangerously delicious. There are a few commercially prepared Caesars in the 'fridge. Population of Canada (real-time model) 41,593,707 Some Math for Yall Canada is home to an estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 moose. Let's take an average of 750,000 moose for calculation purposes. If Canada has a population of 41,593,707 people, we divide the number of moose by the number of people: $$\frac{750,000 \text{ moose}}{41,593,707 \text{ people}}$$ Approximately, each person in Canada would get around 0.018 moose. I feel like they could have added this fact: Younge st., in Toronto is actually the world’s longest street at 56km. The Trans-Canada highway is the world’s longest highway. So we have both.
@RyguyAB8 күн бұрын
This comment would be better if it was accurate.... It is Yonge St., not Younge St. and it's status as the longest street in the world is something of an urban legend, even though it did make it into the Guiness Book of World Records at one point, it was arguably never accurate. As the Wikipedia page about Yonge St. says, it may actually be Dundas St. that has the best claim to the longest street in the world... Additionally, the Trans-Canada Highway is not the longest in the world. It may be the longest non-loop highway within a single country, but it is way shorter than the Pan-American Highway, Australia's national highway or the Trans-Siberian Highway. Other than the Australian highway, the others are technically multi-national highways but I don't know how long the Russia portion of the Trans-Siberian actually is.
