416 means long frame (the long Version from the 406 legend) and doka ( yes you pronouce it right) means in german Doppelkabine or in englisch crewcab

"Doppelkabine" means "crewcab", but the exact translation would obviously be "double cabin".

Its such a badass design, a Truck that can move really heavy loads, can be fitted with all kinds of machinery, thats also a Tractor and can go anywhere. Its the multitool of Vehicles, and they are fairly present in Germany, on Construction, fitted with cranes, Hauling stuff to anywhere in Agriculture, or shovel the snow.

You can still find decent ones for around €20-30k here in Germany. They were very common as community trucks in park commissions, road construction, fire fighting, ect. It's easier to find good ones from the 80s and 90s (U 424) tho. They were also built to dig up a field with a harrow, so yes, those beasts can pull almost everything. ^^

Over here in Australia there are quite a few Unimogs around as Expeditionary/Apocalypse Vehicles , for someone with a bit of Money . There is even a Specialist Engineering Firm called Unidan that can build virtually anything onto a UniMog chassis . Our Army uses them so they are AVAILABLE , usually in Good condition and Very well maintained and reasonable Mileage too .

I remember driving a singlecab during my time at the Bundeswehr (german army) we called them elbowbreakers. Because there was a mistake you only made once. When you shifted from the first into the second gear or however pulled the shift down, you were sometimes surprised how easy the handle worked, in additon to other trucks (Magirus Deutz or Iveco f.e.), and you pulled the shiftinggear backwards with some power, you smashed your elbow against the backwall of the singlecab, that you would never do that again! You had to push the gears from above with your fingertips ;-) But I still remember, how much fun it was to drive down at the manoueverground. Especially through the Panzerstrassen (tankroads), trails that were made for tanks to teach and drill the offroad driving in a tank. Some rookies in their Marder- and Leopardtanks get stocked their, but the Unimog made it through. Sometimes with some difficulties, but this animal of an offroader made it.

Until a few years ago we still had an even older model Unimog double cab with tool storage at my local federal disaster response unit in germany. They were great and still kept on trucking. We had another short wheelbase single cab Unimog with a standard bed too, a generation younger than in the video, which came from the german military and had a similar spec to the one in the video too. You can tell by the roof hatch, which could be used for all kinds of stuff like mounting a heavy machine gun on it. That shows how versatile and robust Unimogs really are.

US Army had a limited run of 'mogs built for them - the 419 - that served with combat engineer units and came with various PTO operated equipment for specific tasks. Some had Freightliner plaques even though they were built at the same Gaggenau plant as other 'mogs. The vehicle goes as a 'tractor' in the army, which IMO is a suitable description and totally in line with the original intention with the Unimog. Yes, one CAN utilize a 'mog as a makeshift truck however it's designed more for work than transport. Always wanted one and it's definately a unique crossbreed vehicle in a class of its own
@CaptianInternet

Great comment. Thank you. I did not know that even the US army has some of them. and you are totally right. They are purely made to work, rather than to transport. Yes. The truck builds ... they got something.

This thing in Germany was registered to towing capacity of 14,5 tons, but could get upgraded. Was also used on rails as locomotive for freight trains , towing hundreds of tons. As a student, i sadly came to a fresh accident, in which one such thing had towed two agricultural wagons ( which was legal in those years) full of sugar beets on freshly frozen roads early in the morning. The two wagons pushed that thing in the ditch, it toppled over 180 degrees, and the driver was fatally compressed by the steering wheel. I could not help, lifting that heavy thing, and he just..... Never forgot that scene, and every time i see a 416 memories built up.

These things are so expensive now. I got my 1962 U404 20 yrs ago for $6k US. Was a beast, even with stock gas motor. Sold it when moving, wish I hadn't. It was an easy drive, not exactly fast...maybe 45mph wound tight. Maintenance was heavy for my poor skills. I didn't really factor it's age in when buying it. There are Unimog meet-ups all over. Good one in Oregon called Mogfest.

Check out the Swedish Scania SBAT111 or TGB30 military truck. It's also something in between a semi-truck and a truck. 4x4 or 6x6, straight six diesel with or without turbocharger. Automatic gearbox (from the 70s), sounds awesome, amazing in terrain, can tow howitzers and stuff like that. Badass vehicle.

The brake booster wasn't there either. There was only a normal dual-circuit master cylinder and the pneumatic brake booster was under the driver's cab on the frame. However, they weren't as fast as this one when the display is in miles. That would be 117 kmh. And you didn't want to be that fast either because it had terrible road holding and the brakes weren't over the top either. At 70 miles you can no longer get it to stop.

Look out what a whole of machinery can be Applikationen to the unimog. On the Front, the back, the rear and even under the Chassis. Snow shovel or Cluster, Salt Sprecher in Winter. In summer good for Farmers, sppreading seed or nutrition with the Tank on the back, or even, i think it is the best Tool. You can put on railway-shoes😮 just drive on that railway-chassis and you can use the unimog like a small Lok.

A Unimog is not comparable to American pichup trucks. Its not meant to be used as a normal car and is designed accordingly. And that has its price - when you buy it, but also when you drive it. This one has a lot of work done on it - I guess its a 80s model - which must have cost a fortune. Though, I reckon Unimog purists will frown over the grill with all the Mercedes stars... :)

Well... If the Unimog isn't too far away from you, I would drive there if I were you to see the vehicle up close. And who knows... Maybe you'll have the chance to test drive the Unimog. Another idea is to deal with the US. Representation of the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle division (I think they separated the commercial vehicle business from the passenger car division a few years ago). If you make a nice film about your visit, they definitely won't say no. It's basically free advertising for Daimler, with people they might not otherwise reach, with their own advertising. And here are the appropriate German proverbs: "Asking, costs nothing... Politeness costs nothing and only make good press and the most important saying... Try, it makes you smart..."

I know the shift levers a little differently. I don't know if this is original. All levers are just made of round steel with a plastic ball at the end. The gear lever is normally bent to the left at the top, the for- and reverse lever is also made of round steel and is shorter. Instead of the reduction switch, it had a lever on the right, like the for- and reverse lever. Behind the for- and reverse lever there was a lever for the longitudinal lock. I think you could also switch the cross locks with this. ThHere is the pneumatic switch on this one, which looks like it comes from the newer Unimog.

Just an observation, personal too. So don’t mind me too much. I’ve found that I like F1 less and less. Purpose built rockets that need an IC to work at all, and then they complain about the smallest thing. I’d like it better if they raced cars that could cope with every and any circumstance. Like… rally? Yeah. But as it is, rallying is not tv friendly. Rallycross? No, that’s too purpose built, just like F1. I want something more robust. Even Dakar has reclined to luxury class. It wasn’t like that in the 80s, it was about getting there at all, camaradery and competitors working together. Sharing tools, mechanics and spare parts, getting each other out of trouble if you were lost in the desert or even hurt. That’s more like it. Friends will be friends. Anyone? I feel it’s time for a motorsports racing class that’s closer to home, grass roots, and tv friendly enough to get some traction. Current racing classes are just too egotestical for me. That Unimog makes me want to be a kid again. Dad getting us all home safely, no matter what. That kind of vibe. Or me being the dad, also good. That’s close to the mark. There’s a book, Boris. About Leningrad in ww2 as seen by a kid. There were food transports by trucks across a frozen lake. Didn’t always end well. What’s F1 compared to that? And those drivers never got paid a single penny.

It cannot be 70s and I doubt 80s too if the sign saying *Turbo-Diesel* is original. There was no reliable turbo charger available at that time. btw. DoKa is the abbreviation for "Doppelkabine" = double cabin. It means there is a row with a bench behind drivers and passengers seat. The dump box is the standard design for Unimogs. Unimogs are built with a special extra-ordinary resilient steel. I have to cut a clamp which was not accesible with a grinder so we used a *HUGE* bolt cutter (well, actually 3), 2 pipes as extenders for the grips and were 2 strong men to bite through that clamp. We broke 2 cutters before the 3rd one succeded.

I'm going to show my naivety here. Q: in the US, is your slow lane in the centre & you fast lane on the outside? If so doesn't that make it harder to use the exits? Here in Oz, our fast lane is in the centre & slow lane on the outside.

No, sadly almost everyone here uses the highway incorrectly. Right lane is the slow lane here, center lane (or lanes) should be for cruising, left lane is the Fast lane which is supposed to be for passing only. When I’m driving it seems as though Myself and maybe 20% of other drivers follow this philosophy/rules and the other 80% go as they please weaving around, bunching up in clusters on the left (which I can’t stand) or worse.. passing on the right ( which is dangerous and illegal)

@@IWrocker Cheers, Ian. Here in Oz it's most certainly illegal to travel solely in the fast lane. This is enforced Ridgely. So most follow the law.

Not an issue usually, this video was very quiet, I could barely hear him myself and I maxed out the volume. My apologies

Do you know the meaning of UNIMOG? It means "UNIversalMOtorGerät" = in English: universal motor tool :) DOKA = Doppel Kabine = double cabin

With a Unimog on a highway and 80mph fast? Only the mentally disturbed try this! Personally, I wouldn't buy this Unimog, because if I do buy a Unimog, then one in original condition. Btw; that would have to be a 1983 model.

@@IWrocker There are good videos like the FF Pinkafeld traffic accident with a trapped person in real time or the Tragwein volunteer fire department with an image video. Have a nice day with your Fam ☺️

Nice restored mog ,shame about the body color. Not unimog style ,should be green yellow or orange ,def no sparkely colors. But that is just my humble opinion. But all the other stuff is nextlevel for a workhorse ,👍🏻👍🏻 just that body color is wrong for that type of vehicle.😟
