Back in the day (before the mid 80's) Swedish kids were really starved of Cartoons, we only had 1-2 stateowned TV channels where cartoons were not prioritized, so that made Disney on Christmas eve very special for us, and it just became a tradition from there.

Actually there were more cartoons than Disney on national state owned public service, but mostly from the eastern Europe. Like Czechoslovakian puppet animation, mister sandman from eastern Germany and so on. But sometimes there were actually Hanna Barbera cartoons and Warner Brothers cartoons too

Donald Duck at Christmas is titled "From all of us to all of you" from the Wonderful World of Disney from 1958. It's been broadcast in Sweden every Christmas since 1960.

When I was a child, we only had 2 TV channels. They had programs for adults and some programs for the whole family. Nothing for children. The only time they showed cartoons was on Christmas Eve. One hour Disney special and everybody watched! Eventually they started to show some programs for children every day, but that were most educational programs. Still no cartoons. Nowadays, when we can watch anything we want anytime we want, Disney is no longer a "must watch" on Christmas Eve, but most families have their TV on as a background, just because it is tradition.

You know, the reason Anders gave them those "weird lines" is that the Donald Duck cartoon is almost the same every year. And the tradition is to sing and say the lines together with the cartoon. Everyone knows it by heart. It's not that we need more cartoons - it's like reading your kid's favorite book. They know every line - but they still want to hear it.

I prefer the original Norwegian version "Alt for Norge", but since they stopped making it in 2019 the Swedish copy cat will have to do...
