Bottom line is in general you guys pay more in combined tax and healthcare costs than we in the UK pay just in tax, and you get generally poor benefits for the taxes you pay, infrastructure is poor, services are poor, etc. Also because you have to file your own taxes it creates this image in your mind of tax as being money lost to you . Here your tax is almost always deducted by your employer you never see it as part of your earnings almost. Its there but you dont think of it in the way you have to when you have to figure it out and pay or claim a return. Then when we want some healthcare we can just go an get it. Even discounting cost, its just a huge weight off ones mind knowing if im ill i dont have to think about if im ill enough to afford it , I can just get it fixed.

After you combine what Americans pay in taxes and private health insurance, its' way more than what people in the UK, Europe and Asia pay in terms of their taxes that covers government works salaries, infrastructure, universal healthcare, university etc. The annual US's military budget is around $770 billion, and corporations get huge tax cuts, s the tax burden falls on average Americans... so it's not really a case of pulling tax money away from regular government works like cops etc. nor is it about defunding infrastructure, but about reallocating some of the military budget, a significant portion that's wasted on projects that go nowhere, and removing huge tax cuts for corporations, and there would be plenty of money. Also, because the US health system is private, a lot of the money that goes into it goes to the administration (cause hospitals here are essentially corporations), so there's a lot of money that doesn't even need to be spent. It is absolutely disgusting that the richest country in the world will not provide their people with universal healthcare.

When I have visited the USA I have just casually spoken to people. Some of the homeless I spoke to where literally in that position because of medical bills. One man I spoke was in a vehicle accident and lost his foot. His medical bills were almost half a million dollars. He had to claim bankruptcy, lost his marriage and things went downhill from there. Breaks my heart honestly. 💔 I had a ruptured appendix with complications and was in the hospital for one MONTH and it cost me NOTHING! The people in the USA making the decisions have both money and insurance and don’t care about you. It’s terrible.

Once saw a news report about an American town. A giant hall was filled with people coming to see volunteer doctors, dentists and whatever more medical people. Some of the kids (10-12 years) NEVER had seen a doctor/dentist/whatever in their lives.... To be honest, a lot of the problems people had started out pretty harmless but over time grew into serious and even life-threatening situations. As a European I was absolutely appaled that this huge nation doesn't seem to care for its citizens. Since when did US healthcare became a business form instead of a basic human right?

The NHS is free at point of service, its paid for from income tax and National Insurance which is taken from peoples wages at source. It costs less than what an American pays in health insurance, co-pays and out of pocket. Some figures show that yes the amount of tax an American pays will go up but they will save on not paying health insurance and co-pays

I had a motorcycle accident around 10 years ago, it put me in hospital for almost a month, i had repeated regular mri scans to check for internal bleeding, and surgery to completely reconstruct my hand and forearm, i then went through 4 months of physio. 1 year later I needed a second set of surgeries and physio due to complications however the NHS had no surgery slot for a long time so they sent me to a private hospital instead. I DIDNT PAY A SINGLE PENNY FOR ANYTHING, not the food, surgery, or medication, Not even for the private hospital. Another thing to note is all prescription medication has a standard cost of around £10. UNLESS you have a condition that will mean you need medication for life such as diabetes or thyroid issues, in this case you get an exemption card meaning all prescription medication is completely free of upfront cost. now here's the kicker, a lot of Americans jump to the taxation excuse without looking into where their tax money goes! You guy pay more in tax than we do towards healthcare even before you start considering medical insurance.

Do you guys have to pay any extra taxes as riders that car drivers don't pay? In New Zealand we have to pay an ACC levy on our rego (MOT) that adds about $350 onto registration costs. ACC is the Accident Claims and Compensation organisation, the reasoning being that bikers claim more often due to higher risk of injury than car drivers. Edit: assuming you're from the UK.

I’m on 7 different vital medications daily (some are up to 4 times a day.) I have to see a doctor at least twice a month, blood tests once a month, recently had a lower abdomen ultrasound and due for another next month (even the car parking at the hospital was free!) Before I had to stop working, I had a seizure at work and was in an ambulance within 10 minutes. Due to my circumstances, the hospital even arranged transport home for me. As I live in Scotland, none of this costs me a single penny. I called the doctors this morning and have been giving an appointment in just two hours time! I am not working right now due to bad health (obviously) but even when I was the tax deducted didn’t bother me as it wasn’t that much and when I think about how much I rely on our National Health Service, I’d gladly pay more. If I happened to be an American in the exact same circumstances, I think I’d be dead by now. The NHS gets bad press in the USA but it’s our lifeline and we appreciate it so, so much. I feel so bad for Americans, raised to believe they are the world leaders and are the land of the free.

Yes even here in the UK we do pay a fair bit of tax but as others below have said because of tthe way our system is structured we get more for our money and still pay less than you do. Our basic rate of tax is 20% which goes to the Government and pays for defence, schools etc. we then pay national insurancee between 7-13% which pays for the NHS, benefits if we are too sick to work or lose our jobs. Car owners pay road tax for road maintenance etc. And we pay local council tax which covers local social services for the elderly, rubbish collection and stuff in our area. All this combined is still less than you pay in tax and health insurance combined.

In my country if i need dental work done it will cost me $3 dollars and 65 cents and that's the price of the public transportation to get there and back. But i have to admit if i lose a teeth i can get an artificial replacement for 0 cost but it will be a cheap one. I have to pay the cost for more expensive one like gold or other types, but only the costs they are not allowed to profit from it. Insurance is around $140-$240/month depending if you opt for 12 or 24 physio sessions per year and those kinds of differences and it is mandatory. But then again if you can show you cannot afford it (minimum/low wage job or on social wellfare) then the government will pay like $70-180 back each month, and then you can pay the rest of it from your income or social wellfare. BTW social wellfare is around $1200/month can be higher if your bills are too high. Hence they even pay part of your rent and energy costs if those costs brings you below certain amounts deemed needed to pay for neccesaties. For all that though taxes on income are higher up to 50% above like $70000/year. (for the first 30.000 it's like 20% then for the part above that 35% and then the highest bracket of 50% starts at 70.000 and up. But then again we have no VAT added at the cash registers, we pay a flat rate of 7% for items you need and around 18% for luxuries. (those are included in the prices listed). It's a lot but you get nice roads no potholes, no fear going homeless due to housing costs, no fear for medical costs and all kinds of other services. Just to show a bit how capitalism and socialism is used in Europe. You cannot compare it to socialists states in South America. BTW i got a brain disease in 1969 spent months in hospitals had several surgeries and have physio for like 50 years now. Total cost : out of pocket? zero 0 zilch. I would be dead if i was born in the USA, simply due to costs involved. Isn't it irony that it was an doctor/professor from the USA that saved my life here? Paid for by insurance ofcourse. I was too sick and still an infant and couldn't be transported to the USA so they brought an expert over. God Bless America but i am happy living here. Atleast here i can see a doctor telling me it's just a cold take this cough sirope drink against soar throath and go home. without me even having to have a wallet with me.

In the UK each working person pays 6% of their income monthly between 18 yrs and 66 yrs - you pay nothing if you do not earn more than GBP 12.000 per year. or you are unemployed. All unemployed are "insured" for free. Any EU (European citizen also gets free health care as we do in the other 27 EU nations. You do not the 6% on anything you earn over GBP 140,000. Each worker also pays 25% on their earnings as income tax. We get free NHS health care when ever you need it. Ambulances, and even Helicopter amulbulances are also free. If you need drugs these are free once you pay a fixed fee of GPS10 per item/box.

Total tax in the UK is about 26% of your wage inc. health care.- so the more you earn the more you pay upto a limit of 40%. American tax (all taxes) and insurance costs, cost Americans 46% of their wage. Your health insurance does not cover all, so you get co-pay, which means you pay even more. In fact some people even go bankrupt. So we pay more tax because of our health care is a lie. Generated by Medical Companies and Insurance Companies. So you are being taken, big time.

Although we don't have to pay for medical treatment at the point of use here in the UK we have actually paid for the service from the day we started work after school. No Linda, ‘foreigners’ have to pay for NHS use on top of paying taxes, while British born people get it for free at the point of service. What is causing issues in the NHS at the moment is there is a shortage of staff- DRs, Nurses, mid wives etc because of BREXIT. Those ‘foreigners’ who you complain of were the key workers who kept the NHS running during covid while having to pay extra to use it themselves.
