In the cricket world we call the infrared camera called Hot Spot. It is used in most games. Plus we have Snicko to detect edges. Cool tech in Cricket...Geek Out!!

If the ball hits the bat it’s not out in an LBW appeal . The side view is they are looking for a white spot or hot spot showing the ball hitting the bat . If there is no hot spot showing then ball tracking comes in to play . It can show the ball hitting the stumps . But because the umpire gave it not out the ball must be shown to hit the stumps by half of the ball for the 3rd umpire to over rule and give the batsman out . Hope that makes sense

First thing - none of the Australians "charged" the umpire. Steve Smith walked to the umpire to ask a question, as he is allowed to do. Josh Hazelwood was returning to his bowling mark, and approached the umpire on the way. None of the other players approached the umpire. The Australians were probably expecting that the review would proceed to the ball tracking. That it didn't may have confused them. There is a screen they can see on the ground, and the review is shown on that. I think that the ball tracking would have shown the ball pitching just outside leg stump, and therefore wouldn't be out anyway.

I'm Australian. Our boys were wrong here. Josh Hazelwood should be better than this. It's a marginal call. If it hits the bat before it hits the pad it's not out. Hotspot is great technology, it doesn't always give you great evidence, but when it does it's very clear, unlike snicko, the sound recording review system, which is much more ubiquitous at venues, and too trusted by the third umpire in my opinion. In this case I think the bat has clipped the pad on the way down, so there is already a significant hot area showing, which makes the slight nick of the ball not as obvious, but still visible. In this scenario the original decision on field carries weight, if he had given it out on the field and New Zealand had reviewed they may not have deemed this sufficient evidence to overturn, but it would need to be extraordinary evidence to give him out here.

It’s amazing how much you can learn from watching 3rd umpire decisions, especially with LBW appeals. You should see when they get Hawkeye involved to predict the path of the ball had it not hit the body. Worth checking out more.

Umpires have a hard enough job making calls on the game. They don't need to deal with childish behaviour on top of that. It wasn't that long ago that reviews weren't a thing, even for run-outs.

if the the first contact of the ball is with the bat or hand of the batsman below the wrist, then the LBW is invalid as he has played the ball so any tracking of deviation after hitting the bat is pointless as LBW is out of question. If the first contact of the ball is the body of the batsman, the LBW claim is valid for checking. The umpires weren't checking whether the ball was about to hit the wicket or not, hence they never went to ball tracking. They were only checking what the first point of contact of the ball was, the bat or the body. LBW ball tracking comes only into picture when its clear there is no bat involved and the ball isn't pitching out of the leg stump's trajectory.

If the ball hit the bat (even if its only a feather of a touch) then he's not out. Steve Smith should be ashamed of himself, typically Australian (check out the underarm bowl, again against New Zealand in the one Day International in 1980's).

Hazelwood was fined because he effectively abused the umpire and it was caught by the stump mic. Smith did nothing wrong imo.

Yeah in this case it seems the bowling side is out of line. Having said that, the third umpire has historically made some terrible decisions - some so bad you wonder how they were deemed qualified to be given the responsibility in the first place. So I mean I'd like to agree the umpire decision is final but the players do have the right in this day and age for the expectation that the technology interpretation to be of a baseline quality.

@@oneminanswers We know its coming close to the end. We are trying to iron out some issues we were having with finding a service to watch it on. The games start at 9am for us, which is also difficult due to irl responsibilities! We are going to try our best to cover some live matches of the IPL this year, but we will better plan in the future!
