Good to see an American getting into rugby. There was a game in 2021 for the 1874 cup, named for the first recorded game of rugby to be played in the USA. It was played in Washington DC between the US Eagles and the NZ All Blacks. It's on KZbin, I think you can guess the outcome. But the US did score their first ever try against the All Blacks, and their second one as well.

I'm a kiwi (a person from new Zealand). Rugby is our national sport it's great to play and to watch. Although it is very hard on the body with limited playing time. General once you reach 35 it's pretty over for playing. But still a great sport.
@secotioid14 күн бұрын
They have to hold the ball for as long as possible before passing to draw the defender and make sure they commit to a tackle, thus leaving less defence available and opening a gap.

It's great watching the likes of Portugal (second tier team in the world hierarchy) scoring an awesome try against South Africa, currently the best team in the world.

The high kick is usually referred to as a Garry Owen after the Irish club that introduced it to the game

I love rugby now I don't have to play it 😁(as a child who was always smaller than his peers)!
@ironside21011 күн бұрын
Passing just before "being taken out" is to ensure that the defender is also "taken out". Passing too soon sees defender shift focus to the next ball carrier. A good Union game is a joy to watch, as you are finding. For an American, note that there are few stoppages, so 80 minutes of action in about 90 minutes on field. Stamina required!

Best part about rugby is watching "props breaking the line"
@ZA_Troglodyte13 күн бұрын
Even better: the look on a prop's face when he just broke the line and realises he has to run with the ball, with probably 29 players on the field who are faster than him 😂

As a kid you're told to "swing it" pass the ball, let the ball down the work. Modern defensive patterns make it a lot harder. You should react to a Squidge Rugby video to understand the level of planning and preparation that goes into these moves.

Rugby as far as football codes go is a minor sport in Australia. With game attendances of up to 100,000 the Australian Football code (AFL) dominates. Especially not just men, but women and children excited to attend as it maintains their interest throughout the game with non stop athletic action.

Rugby Union.... Rugby League is AFL's equal
@Mrharryprosser11 күн бұрын
@ 😂🤣😂 Rugby average crowd attendance in 2024 was 20,100. The AFL average of 38,300, nearly double. Television viewers are both average just under 800,000 per game. AFL finals viewing 1,400,00 compared to NRL 1,057,00. Foxtel keeps it’s set-top box viewers a secret so viewership relies on number from channels seven and nine making comparisons very difficult.
@AverageAussieBloke-r1z11 күн бұрын
@ are you talking about Rugby Union? Rugby league had an average of 3.4m viewers for each State of Origin match with a peak of 5.4m for game one making the series the highest rating TV show in the country ever. Game 2 and 3 were second and third. More people go to AFL. But more people watch NRL.
@br4dy199814 күн бұрын
can you check out the NRL, its rugby leagie, similar to this which is rugby union, its faster paced than this rugby so i think youll enjoy it more. The NRL had Russel Crowe make a promo for it directed at Americans becaue last year they started the season in vegas and sold over 40k tickets. theyre going to be back this year so get into it before the season starts. ps nearly all reactors that react to both rugby league and rugby union, majority of the time they prefer league
@br4dy199814 күн бұрын
If you care, NRL and AFL are australias 2 biggest sports, but its based off where in australia you are. if youre interested in learning about it theres a video called "The Barassi Line - Australia's Great Sporting Divide" it explains it
@br4dy199814 күн бұрын
the only thing left out of that videos is that the nrl has a huge pacific island audience and players from there whereas the afl dont have many at all

@markpaweena781 Yeah , AFL , is a non stop , 120 mins of brutality , fast , athleticism is a other level , no using hands leap on the shoulders of a 210 cm giant , that's some leap , 70 meter kick , Common, frantic , the tempo is awesome , no breaks , an add after a goal 30 secs , no goals no adds , no time out , and players must get up straight away , a 2 on 1 will cost a goal , it has no off side , so 360° legal , it'll catch on , and is oldest Codified football game on earth, Codified by MCC (Melbourne Cricket Club) In 58/59 , then in. AEF Codified Soccor in 1863 , 1870 first FA Cup, then in 1871 FRU Codified Rugger and Gridiorn who took a lot from Rugby, as Brits were in America , and was codified in 1973 , the IAA codified Gaelic Football in 1884 , so it's a very old game , the first with rules , Copyrighted , and an American came to Australia saw Australian Rules and invented Basket ball . it's a ripping game footy , cheers
