@@Stephen-Steven-Stephens Sorry just have to jump in here, it’s gifting the servants. The ones who live with you in you manor estate and only have half a day off a week. They were busy serving you on Christmas Day, so would be given the 26th off to visit their own families. Small boxes of leftover food and gifts would be handed out to the servants to share with their families. The decline in the serving class, and the rise of 5 day working weeks meant that the 26th and the next working day was no longer the same thing, hence the official Boxing Day BH. Also Boxing Day is actually named after the Christmas Box (Alms Box) a wooden box, rich families would fill with food and gifts, then share with the poor the day after Christmas.

You scoff at Hawaii in the modern sense - it is a US state in the modern era - but it has a the Union Jack flag on it's state flag. So at one point Hawaii was historically linked with Great Britain. And that of course is what "might" throw people off in the question, if they knew about the State Flag of Hawaii
@KenFullman
@KenFullman 2 ай бұрын
The only "link" Hawaii has with Great Britain was that they were friendly to the British. They had no flag at that time so one of the captains of a British ship presented them with the ensign to use. So the first flag of the Hawaiian nation was the red ensign of the royal navy. Which was red and white stripes with a union jack in the corner. They also purchased a ship from the British and the sale included it's flag (also the red ensign). I'm not sure if the gift of the ensign and this ship purchase are part and parcel of the same story but they were never part of the British empire. Just friends.

@@KenFullman You had better Google the 'Sandwich Islands', the formative name of Haiwaii from the 1770s until about 1840, when it became better known in Polynesian. Captain James Cooke (RN) and his ship's crew were the first 'outsiders' to visit the islands in 1778, which is a pretty significant occurance to any group of people completely isolated for millennia, actually. Many different countries in the world used part of the Union flag, as they had no concept of a flag except the one they'd seen flying on British ships. The Islands continued to be self governing, being internationally recognised as such in 1810, but in the 1890s they were annexed by the US Empire, and never regained their independence.........

Robbie Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne"
@AayJayEmm
@AayJayEmm 3 ай бұрын
Sort of... he didn't compose it, but he did write it down. I'm not sure of a better word to use... recorded? (But that makes it sound like he had a studio) Most folk songs were just sung, as there is no real reason to write them down, you aren't handing out lyrics sheets. Fearing they would be lost to history with the decline of the Scots language, Burns would write down folk songs he heard on his travels and send copies to museums to be preserved. He usually left a small description on these copies, this is Auld Lang Syne's: "The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man." Not diminishing him in any way as I'm glad he did what he did!

It’s not the shadow council, it’s the shadow cabinet and by having a shadow cabinet they have dedicated members of the parliamentary party that are looking into what their in power counterpart is doing. Robert Burns, is the person who wrote down Auld Lang Syne…you know, the song that gets sung all over the world at New Year and is a traditional Hogmanay song. He is known as the Bard in Scotland and was responsible for writing many influential poems and songs (the title of Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men was lifted directly from the Burns poem To A Mouse and due to his views on the equality of all, he was even made the Poet Laureate of the USSR…even though Burns had been dead for about 120 when the Russian Revolution happened). There’s a great live version of Paolo Nutini performing A Man’s a Man for A’ That…along with another great version that was performed at the opening of the Scottish Parliament. It’s a brilliant song about republicanism. Burns is still celebrated the world over on or around the 25th of January, as that’s the date of his birth in 1759. At Burns Suppers or Burns Night celebrations his songs and poems are sung and recited, plenty of whisky is drunk and Scotlands national dish of haggis, neeps and tatties is served. The very first Burns Night was actually held by some of his friends in the Alloway cottage that he was born in on the first anniversary of his death. He died on the 21st of July 1796 at the age of 37. Oh and the cottage is still there as a museum, it’s not too far from Ayr town centre where there is a pub called The Tam O’ Shanter (which it was renamed to after one of Burns most famous poems) where the man himself used to drink. Why do people from the US struggle so much with pronouncing Loch Lomond, it’s not even the Loch part that irritates, we understand that the ch sound at the end of Loch isn’t a sound made in all languages but Lomond is pronounced Low-mnd but it’s a really famous loch and mountain (Ben Lomond) but Loch Lomond was even immortalised in quite a well known folk song..”You take the high road and I’ll take the low road and I’ll be in Scotland before you. For me and my true love will never meet again, on the Bonnie Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond”. The song’s called either The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond or just Loch Lomond.

The Cenotaph is the focal point for the UK's Remembrance activities. Not just Remembrance Day (11 November) but all such national acknowledgements made to those who have "...given their all..." to defend our way of life. Not just armed forces, either. Watch a good video about Remembrance Day in Whitehall and it'll explain who the groups of people standing around The Cenotaph holding wreaths are there representing (inc. each of the emergency services & the transport workers who kept London functioning during The Blitz). The monarch lays the 1st wreath on behalf of the whole nation and then the others proceed in strict order. Other wreaths get handed to attendants as the parade passes down Whitehall towards Parliament Square. ANZAC Day gets remembered at The Cenotaph. In July 2023, there was a Belgian parade at The Cenotaph. People forget how very close we've been to Belgium over the last 2+ centuries. The Cenotaph was designed by Lutyens, a very famous British architect, who designed lots of memorials amongst other buildings. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoHYpZRsgNmHfc0si=um3pTZYyWzHB943j In the run up to 11 November, you should do a series about Remembrance if you want to understand more about British culture at a visceral level. For example: Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Westminster Abbey; the Field of Poppies at Westminster Abbey; The Poppies at The Tower of London marking the centenary of WW1 and the subsequent art installations using some of the Poppies (Imperial War Museum etc.); The mass building of war memorials & village halls after WW1 in honour of the fallen; The work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission & the cemetaries in Europe & around the world (Lutyens was their Chief Architect. The vast majority of our historic sites and museums are closely connected to past conflicts, even if it's not immediately obvious. The Natural History Museum, London is a good example. We're brought up learning about our history throughout our school days. Even those who didn't enjoy history at school will know far more than they think they do. It's always all around us and seeps in without people realising it.

A key part of parliamentary democracy is the idea of Loyal Opposition and holding the ruling party (ie government) to account - so the shadow position is able to do that in more detail, it also means that should the government change quickly (as they do here, election cycles are shorter and there’s no gap between one Prime Minister or the next, the take over the next day) they have a group of people who are able to take the actual cabinet positions (although it may be different people from the Shadow Cabinet in the end, although there’s usually some continuity)

@@HappyBeezerStudios Nope! There is one Cabinet, led by the Prime Minister and one Shadow Cabinet, led by the Leader of the Opposition. In a coalition government, all of the parties making up that coalition would be considered "the government" so the individual cabinet members might be from any of those parties. The Shadow Cabinet would be the largest party NOT in the coalition. Theoretically that might be the third largest party, but I don't think there has ever been a coalition government comprising the two main parties except for during WWII, when even the Tories and the Labour Party had to concede there was something a tad more important than party politics to address. Smaller parties have nominated spokespeople known as their "Front Bench". At the beginning of this century, one Liberal Democrat leader started to refer to his front bench team as a shadow cabinet, but calling a cow a horse doesn't make it one, and that party now doesn't have enough MPs to fill a bathroom cabinet, let alone a political one.

@andrewwood8706 indeed it does, but it's the version before the current one, it lacks the St Patrick's Cross. And that's because Captain Cook discovered the Islands in the 18th century before Ireland joined the union with Great Britain. And to both quiz takers, with life peers (usually barons) the word to note is 'life' because they aren't hereditary titles, but last only for the lifetime of the holder granted it. The person gets the title for life but cannot pass it on to his heir. King Charles made his brother a lifetime holder of the Dukedom of Edinburgh, he will not be able to pass that on to his son James, although James will inherit the Earldoms of Wessex and Forfar because Elizabeth didn't limit them to Edward for life when she granted them to him. Life peers are still lords (or ladies) and while the monarch usually confers titles on the advice of the prime minister, it is still formally their power to confer it because the monarch is the font of honours.

In fairness you can almost see the Cenotaph from Trafalgar Square if you are standing at the end of Whitehall looking towards Downing Street and The Houses of Parliament. It’s just the slight bend in the road that prevents you from seeing it.

The funny thing is you probably do know bits of Burns. For example Auld lang syne (attributed) The title of Steinbeck's nivel Of Mice and Men comes from Burns' Tae a moose. Plenty of others, he doesn't have the penetration of Shakespeare but its there.

The Cenotaph (pronounced "sennotaff") is on the street called Whitehall which is one of the streets leading to Trafalgar Square and is the street containing many Government department headquarters. Downing Street (where the Prime Minister's residence and office are located at number 10) is off Whitehall. The structure in the middle of Trafalgar Square is Nelson's Column (no giggling please!) Admiral Horatio Nelson won the battle of Trafalgar (in the waters off Trafalgar, Spain) against the combined navies of France and Spain.

26:27 I love the logic that the landmark in Wales can't be "the Lake District" because it "sounds too normal". Like, it's in Wales. It can't sound normal. Wales never has any normal-sounding things in it. Funny, because it's entirely true. Can't fault your logic. In fact, it's even more not-normal-sounding than you might imagine, as there's been a trend recently in Wales - similar to how, in Australia, they no longer call it "Ayer's Rock" but use the indigenous Aboriginal name of "Uluru" instead - to switch to using the native Welsh names, not the imposed English names, for landmarks. So, these days, it's not the Brecon Beacons anymore, it's "Bannau Brycheiniog" and it's not Snowdonia, it's "Yr Wyddfa" for the mountain and "Eryri" for the area - the national park - surrounding the mountain. Therefore, the question is out-of-date and should have it as "Yr Wyddfa". But that's so obviously not in English, it might give the game away as to what's the right answer.

As a born UK citizen I find it a shame that I got one wrong, but to be fair it was the film one and I knew it was Colin Firth and not Leonardo DiCaprio but I was unsure of the second and chose wrong. Still, the test is a lot easier than it used to be - there used to be a load of stuff about EU laws (which to be certain were/are important but are regrettably no longer part of official UK culture).

Most Brits can't ace this test. I work with a lad in his mid-30s who thought that Great Britain was the capital of England, and unrelated to this, he thought that c.c.t.v stood for criminals caught to video. WTF!!

The purpose of the Shadow Cabinet is to hold the actual Cabinet to account. Each shadow minister will have his or her own brief - education, defence, etc - and the responsibility of challenging the government minister in that area in Parliament. They also appear in the media, and communicate how the opposition party would do things differently if they were elected.

A shadow cabinet ensures seamless transition when the opposition party takes over from the ruling party. For every MP (member of parliament) the ruling party has, the opposition has a shadow MP looking over their shoulder to see what they're up to.
