Its called a cheese toastie, and not a cheese butty, for two (obvious) reasons. 1: its toasted. Any toasted sandwich in Britain is called a toastie and not a butty. 2. A cheese butty already exists in the form of the cheese sandwich. Also, a yorkshire pudding as in "toad In the hole" is not pastry nor bread as is nothing like either of these two things. Its nearest 'cousin' is a pancake, and is infact made with the same batter ingredients used in pancakes and also used to batter fish etc (flour eggs milk)

I get where you're going with the fried texture, but as a Yorkshire man, I get my black pudding out of the fridge and add it to my fry up, you get the cold black pudding that contrasts the hot breakfast, and the texture is softer than everything else that been fried. It's the best possible way to have it. (besides just eating right out of the fridge for a snack).

Bread and butter pudding goes a lot further back in time than either of the world wars and probably is pre Victorian as well and is probably not only English in origin, even the French have their own name for the dish, they know it as”Pain Perdu” which translates as forgotten bread, because you can make it with pieces of old stale bread also the dried fruit that is a essential ingredient would have been an imported commodity so further proof of this dish having been invented elsewhere, although I can’t say by whom or where. The custard style of sauce that is poured over the bread is basically there to make the bread damp and easier to eat but is helped firm up by baking in an oven that is already hot and starting to cool down, having been used to cook the main meal. The most basic form of custard that is baked into the dish is just eggs and milk, possibly with a little sugar and for those with a little more of a budget you can add spices such as vanilla or mace/ nutmeg. Once the initial custard has firmly set, the addition of more fresh liquid custard is an option but it can be served as it is. Personally I don’t like the taste or texture of the dish but that is just a matter of preference. I’d rather have a slice of treacle tart made from the same dried out bread made into crumbs and added to golden syrup and baked in a short pastry shell, topped with some lightly whipped cream. Hot or cold this beats bread and butter puddle hands down and it’s cheaper to boot.

Toad in the Hole for 2 people Ingredients 4 Good quality (bangers) sausages. 1/4 pint semi skimmed milk 2 eggs 2oz plain flour (not self raising) oil Method STEP 1 Pre cook veg. I do new potatoes, carrots and peas. Place in pyrex bowl, cover with cling film, and bring in the microwave oven to wait! STEP 2 Pour 1/4 pint of milk into a jug. Add two eggs and whisk. Put 2oz of plain (not self rasing) flour in a bowl, add the whisked eggs and milk, and whisk well for a couple of minutes. Pour back into the jug and place on one side. STEP 3 Heat oven to 200/180 fan. Cover base of 10 inch square baking tray with drizzle of oil. Put in oven - middle shelf to heat. STEP 4 When up to temperature (SMOKING HOT) slide out tray, put sausages in, and toss them about. Then into oven - but only for a couple of minutes. STEP 5 Now give the mix in the jug a final whisk. Slide out baking tray, position sausages to keep them separate, then gently pour in the batter mix. Return to oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Keep an eye on them, and when ready give the veg a blast in the microwave, and make some gravy.

Black pudding is actually considered a superfood. While the idea of it does gross people out, the blood is actually dried before being made into the sausage. It's really dense in micronutrients since it's the base is blood. It's why organ meat such as liver and kidney are actually quite a good way of getting these kinds of nutrients since it's in places where they'd accumulate. Plus it's delicous if you can handle the texture. Sadly too many people, even here in the UK, are brought up with the notion that it's disgusting and/or wrong to eat certain parts of the animal. I just see it as making the most of an animal we've taken the life of to sustain our own. Also, nothing beats slow cooked pork cheek.

Hmmm some of this isn't accurate, pigs in blankets are sausages usually chipolatas or mini chipolatas wrapped in bacon. Butties are not toasted, toasties are.. I absolutely love your channels by the way and have been enjoying your baking episodes. I am pretty sure that pancake mix ingredients and Yorkshire pudding are really similar if not the same so it's pretty much flour, salt, egg and milk (and oil or beef dripping) ... Toad in the hole is Yorkshire pudding with sausages in. You could definitely make it. Also cheese and beans on toast or my husband's favourite cheese, beans and bacon on toast is so good.

Why is it Chip Butty, Bacon Butty but cheese toastie? Note I would call Banana in bread a banana sandwich. There is a clue in the names, a butty is a buttered sandwich. Normally I would expect a 'Butty' to have a warm (recently cooked) filling, thus I would talk of a Banana Sandwich (unless it were cooked banana ; note to self; must try that sometime). A toastie is a sandwich that has been toasted, note not a sandwich made with toast (we do eat those but they are not toasties). The butter in a Butty, is a layer that prevents the bread going soggy, it also melts due to the heat from the filling. Note a butty is often made with a roll (bread roll) rather than sliced bread, we have many type (thus names) of bread rolls. Re pigs in blankets, this guy showed sausage wrapped in pastry (closer to a sausage roll), it should be pork sausage wrapped in bacon.

@stephenlee5929. Toasted banana caramelises it's internal sugars, sho shouldn't need additional suga. Sliced banana (1cm thick) also works very very well on pizza (spread around like pepperoni/sliced sausage toppings) which have lots of meet, anchovy or spices &/or spicy peppers upon them.. As the banana slices melt like marshmallows reducing in height, the natural sugars caramelise, creating a contrasting taste, by sweetening the now saltier tasting meats or fish, while the gooey caramelly sweetness can help contain some of the spicey 'heat' of chilis

They also carry a disease that is fatal to red squirrels, but don't affect the grey squirrel itself. Not only that they kill the Red Squirrel to take over their habitat. They're extremely invasive and destructive, which is why they're on the general licence and classified as vermin.

A typical Sunday in our house growing up consisted of bacon sandwich or a mini English breakfast, and then a roast beef dinner with all the usual; roast potato's, mashed potato's, Yorkshire pudding, beef gravy and veggies (broccoli, carrots, cauliflower or cabbage) and a raspberry Pavlova for dessert. Beans on toast was more of a warming lunch during the colder months for us, with lashings of Daddies brown sauce or cheese grilled on top of it all (we called cheesy beano). Banana and peanut butter on toast, grilled up a bit for caramalisation on top is hands down one of the nicest "thrown together" second breakfast/elevens'/supper you'll ever try, you should definitely try this! Mushy peas, whilst I'm not a huge fan, are not so boring. They go really well with fish and chips...not fries (that is weird), in all honesty though not the nicest looking of foods. Spotted dick....nope, yuk, spoiling a perfectly good pudding with dried fruit. Spotted dick is usually, if i'm correct, a type of bread and butter pudding with current, sultanas and baked with a thin milky custard soaked into the bread. The tin of spotted dick looks like its a sponge pudding with currents in.

You can also get a sandwich maker, (or toasty maker), where you can make toasties, with cheese, beans or other types of food like spaghetti (from the same well known brand as the baked beans), You lightly butter a slice of bread and place it buttered side down on the hot plate, then fill it with the cheese, baked beans or spaghetti, then place another slice of lightly buttered bread, (buttered side facing upwards) on top, then close the lid, (with has another hot plate on top, (The butter just stops the toasty from sticking to the hot plates), It then toasts the bread and heats up the food inside it, plus it also seals the edges and diagonally down the centre, When it is ready you have a toasty that looks kind of like two triangular shaped pasties, 🇬🇧😎👍🏼

Depending on what other ingredients you have to hand it’s possibly to create so many different dishes from the same basic ingredients for example a basic cheese sandwich can be added to with a couple of slices of tomato or onions, pop the same cheese sandwich open faced under a hot grill and you have a slice of toasted cheese on toast, close the sandwich and put it into a toastie maker or just fry it in a pan with a lid on and you have a toasted sandwich, sealed or open edged. Toast the bread spread with some mustard and add a slice of ham, top the ham with a hot mixture of cheese, mustard and beer to make it pourable and pop it under a hot grill. Meanwhile make a simple fried or poached egg and top the open sandwich with the egg and you’ve created a Yorkshire Rarebit! Want a simple Welsh Rarebit, omit the sliced ham and the egg and there you go. This far I have made at least a week’s worth of light meals with the same basic ingredients and if you want more try changing just one of those ingredients and see what you can come up with.

You might have beans on the plate with sausage, bacon, Italian tomato’s fried chopped up boiled potatoes (oh sorry you have hash browns oh but these are chopped boiled potatoes but squashed up and bread crumbs sprinkled over then fried), eggs (fried or scrambled) and brown or tomato sauce, with fried bread on the plate. Never toast on the plate. The toast. Ones after with butter and jam or marmalade with tea. Breakfast can last ages as long as you want. Don’t forget always fried bread on the plate not toast, that came in with holiday hotels to make the breakfast meal cheaper for them and less washing of plates.

For an entire level British recipe you can’t go wrong with cottage pie.

The difference between a butty and a toasty is that a butty is whatever filling on buttered bread or in a buttered bread roll and a toasty is a sandwich that is buttered on the outside and then toasted…typically, if we refer to something as a sandwich it is on bread not toasted bread. Banana sandwiches are amazing and were an absolute favourite of mine as a kid. Mushy peas aren’t just mashed up garden peas, they are made from a specific type of dried peas called marrowfat. They’re soaked in water with some baking soda to rehydrate slightly. Rinsed off, then boiled for quite some time, seasoned (my Mum just used salt and pepper but some people use mint, butter, milk or cream…or maybe a combination of a couple) and served with malt vinegar (at least that’s how my Mum served them, in a bowl with malt vinegar added to taste). I have heard people from the US compare our tinned mushy peas to pea soup over there. A bacon butty is hot bacon served on buttered bread with either ketchup up brown sauce on the bacon. Black Pudding has been around for centuries. As far as I’m aware it’s not banned in the US (though haggis is), it’s just called blood sausage. Spotted dick is got it’s name from an old name for batter/dough being dick and the spots are from the dried fruit. Toad in the hole isn’t made from dough, it’s Yorkshire pudding batter and whoever is making it is going to ensure that the sausages are positioned so as to ensure fair portioning. Maybe I should clarify that generally speaking if cooking or baking in the UK, if you say batter it is something that is either a pouring consistency or it is a consistency that can be dropped from a spoon but you’d mostly still think of it as being more on the liquid side of the things. A dough is what bread or scones are made from and uncooked pastry could also fall into this category, in that once mixed it can be lifted from the bowl or off the worktop/counter as a whole by hand (other than maybe a few scraps that can be added back into the whole).

Beans on Toast is more of a lunch or tea time thing. Toad in the Hole is basically sausage cooked in Yorkshire pudding batter, with a Yorkshire Pudding basically the ancestor of the American "Popover", so should be the easiest to make with US ingredients.... just need some "breakfast sausage" + some batter mix, then just whack it in the oven. British style pancakes should also be easy enough, as just needs plain flour + 3 eggs + milk (we don't bother with baking soda), garnished with granulated sugar and lemon juice. Fried bread is a good British classic to try, a little tricky to get right. Basically get the frying pan oily with bacon grease, heat it up until it starts smoking enough to pray it doesn't set the kitchen on fire, then toss the bread in. Flip it when golden underneath. Top-ups of bacon grease usually required as the bread sucks it up (so it's a good way of cleaning up the pan after cooking an English breakfast). Black pudding is good once you get used to it, has a pretty strong flavour similar to fried liver/kidneys. Angel Delight is good if some arrives in the mail. Current instructions on pack say to mix it with milk and leave for 5minutes, but it's better to leave it for 15-30mins like on the earlier instructions to make sure it sets into a sort of mousse dessert. Spotted Dick is good, as long as you've got some British style cornflour based custard to serve it with - either the ready made stuff from a can (Ambrosia), or the powdered stuff (Birds or some lesser known ones). Making the custard from the powdered stuff can get a bit messy if you don't keep an eye on it as tends to rise up and overflow. If making it in a saucepan it's best to keep stirring the custard, otherwise it sticks to the bottom and burns. In the microwave it's a bit easier as long as you use a big microwave-safe jug to contain it = milk, powder, stir, blast it 3mins, stir, give it 30seconds blasts if it's still liquid rather than gloopy. Toasted fruit teacake is another British classic, popular with old people around tea time - basically a breadroll with raising/currents/sultanas baked into it.... split in 2, grill the tops until golden, slather with butter. Crumpets are another one, eaten at breakfast or tea time = heat 'em up (usually come in a pack of 6 if you don't make your own), slather with melting butter and optionally Lyle's Golden Syrup. The KZbin channel "KeefCooks" has a lot of British recipes to try out.

We (use to) do our cheese toasties in a toasted sandwich maker and not in a pan / under the grill. I like cheese with onion, beans as well as tinned sardines in tomato sauce - but it stinks the house out.

I think you should make a sticky toffee pudding and custard, I have an easy recipe if you want it. The uk is renowned for puddings and sauces. A cheese toasty is not a grilled cheese sandwich, toad in the hole is lush with rich onion gravy.
