In the UK the PIT manoeuvre is considered too dangerous because it can roll the car causing loss of life, the police here will only use it if all other options have been exhausted. I wish I could remember the name of the show so you can watch it, but I remember a show where a British officer went to the USA to work with the police and highlight the differences between them. The clip that I remember the most was a "routine traffic stop" when the officers approached the car the guy tried to drive off, the American cop went running back to the patrol car while the British cop jumped into the open window and grabbed the keys to stop the car. When it all wrapped up the American cop asked why the British officer did that because the guy could have had a gun, the British officer replied with a statement that sums up the difference. "It doesn't matter, it's my job is to put my life on the line to protect the public so I will do what is needed to keep the public safe." The American cop was dumbfounded at the idea of risking their own life to protect the public.

I was curious about the show so I asked ChatGPT if it knew the name of this show based on your description, and it came up with the name "Rookies vs. Feds". Does that ring a bell? Weirdly i can't find any further information on it via google though... The TV show you're describing is likely "Rookies vs. Feds" (also known as "Rookies to the Rescue"). It's a reality TV show where British police officers visit the United States to work alongside American law enforcement officers and highlight the differences in policing techniques and philosophies between the two countries. The scenario you mentioned, with the British officer jumping into a moving car to stop it, is a memorable moment from the show, emphasizing the contrasting approaches to law enforcement.

@@Enlighter Bard gave me a slightly different answer. "The TV show you are referring to is called Traffic Cops. It is a British documentary series that follows the work of traffic police officers in the United Kingdom. The episode you are describing aired in 2007 and featured a British traffic police officer named PC Dave Wain working with the police in Los Angeles. The scene you described happened when PC Wain and his partner were conducting a routine traffic stop. The driver of the car tried to drive off, and PC Wain jumped into the open window to grab the keys. The American cop, who was standing back, was surprised by PC Wain's actions and asked him why he did it. PC Wain replied that it was his job to protect the public, even if it meant risking his own life. The American cop was initially taken aback by PC Wain's attitude, but he came to understand the difference between the way British and American police officers approach their work. In the UK, police officers are trained to de-escalate situations and use force only as a last resort. In the US, police officers are more likely to use force, even if it is not necessary. The episode of Traffic Cops that featured PC Dave Wain in Los Angeles is from the series 7, episode 1. The episode aired on March 13, 2007. The episode title is "Los Angeles: The Thin Blue Line"."

Hi JT, Unfortunately in the UK if the driver is hurt in a police chase the police are blamed and are investigated themselves for dangerous driving. The police have to prove that their actions were to prevent harm to members of the public and the criminal themselves They are not allowed to use PIT unless it is a last resort and then have to ask permission from a senior officer. Yes it is a ludicrous situation.

Its not ridiculous, its annoying but I'd rather have a criminal get away (especially if a petty offence) than a kid killed because the car spins into another vehicle. TPAC (Tactical Pursuit and Containment) is standard operating procedure for UK Traffic Police which is what they tried to do at the beginning. Basically, it's boxing the car in, giving it no place to go. In this case, the rear Police car didn't stop close enough to the rear of the target, giving it enough leeway to reverse with enough speed to break the box (reversing fast and hard is a tactic most criminals have developed because the damage they can do to the engine of the boxing car is more likely to disable that Police car whereas damage to he rear of THEIR car more often than not leaves their car perfectly drivable). Similarly (and more difficult to judge), the front Police car left a little too much of a gap too, allowing the target to lock left and steer onto the grass (the open side of the box). It's easy to say this in retrospect, of course and 'no plan survives contact with the enemy' as my military colleagues say. PITTING is rare in the UK and only tends to happen on motorways where all the traffic is going in the same direction. An Officer at HQ will be in control of the pursuit and any tactic has to be a approved, which is why you often hear pursuing officers radioing sped, road conditions, volume of traffic, etc (and which is why Traffic cars tend to be double-crewed) and the Tactical Officer in control has the authority to call off the pursuit at ANY point if he/she deems the pursuit as too dangerous to the public, the Police and also to the criminal(!) This is particularly true where the vehicle being pursued is a motorbike. PITTING is regarded as more dangerous than TPAC so is use as a last resort and at low speed (usually only after the suspect has already displayed the intent to cause damage to the pursuing Police cars by ramming at least once), particularly in residential and country areas because UK roads don't have the luxury of being created in a grid system the way US roads are, and have grown 'organically' over centuries with all the twists, turns, narrowings that developed prior to the invention of the automobile. Plus, our pedestrians and houses are often closer to the road than in the US because our pavements are narrower, roads are narrower and 'road furniture' is sometimes excessive so there's more chance of the PITTED car hitting something very hard and immovable or, more importantly, an innocent member of the public. Basically this pursuit, while exciting for the viewer, was a total failure in terms of Police tactics and, I'm fairly sure, would have been analysed pretty damn closely by the relevant authorities after the fact and additional training firmly recommended.

British police don't routinely PIT, we don't really have the roads for it and the risk of injury is too great. Instead they work to box. It's worth watching one of these pursuits right through because the communications with control are really something. This was Derbyshire, the force I've had most dealings with, on the A38, a road I know really well that gives easy access from Brum (and beyond) up through Mansfield via Derby. Horrible road. I've just finished watching Sky Coppers on Channel 4, which is focused on the drone units of Birmingham/West Mids, so just down the A38 from this event. Very interesting and a look at how technology is being used nowadays.

@skfa1216 Жыл бұрын
@@mlee6050 The police simply do not have the ability or resources to have helicopters to deploy to every vehicle which they believe is going to fail to stop. If that were the case, they'd require around 5 helicopters actively in the air/on standby at any one time per county/metropolis, which you would need a pilot, comms, and an additional officer there. That's 15 people per county just on helicopters. Plus the fuel cost of being mobile for extensive periods of time. NPAS currently operate 19 helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. That's to serve 43 territorial police forces in the entire of England and Wales. So that's essentially 1 helicopter for every 2 counties. Not even counting the MET and the Midlands, whose vehicle crime is extremely high and require increased amounts of policing. By your logic you would need all 19 helicopters active at once if you wanted all vehicles suspected of failing to stop, be monitored by a helicopter. Another point you mentioned about unmarked vehicles. Whilst it's a good example, then it just isn't practical because you would become suspicious if a vehicle took a particular route and took every turn and lane that you did. Would prompt you to fail to stop more than it wouldn't. That's the justification for all of this.,

On your PIT manoeuvre question - you saw what they do as a standard stop - a rolling surround of the suspect boxing him into the side of the road. Once he'd gone past that stage, I they did the PIT as soon as they'd ascertained that the suspect and the pursuing police were the only vehicles on the carriageway, and that they'd made it past a potential exit off the motorway (once, of course, that the suspect had shown his unwillingness to stop any other way). The other thing is that police vehicles in the UK don't have the bumpers like I've seen on NY city cop cars - they're just the normal saloon models, so this influences how much contact they want to put on another vehicle - they don't want to disable themselves out of the hunt.

The police tend to avoid PIT maneuvers because they're unfortunately not very precise, and they're risky at high speed - it might roll the police car, it might roll the suspect car, it might cause one or the other to cross to the other carriageway and become a risk to oncoming traffic - or they might end up with the car rolling over into oncoming traffic. It's considered a last ditch thing to do. And of course it's expensive on the cars, since you then have to repair the police cars, and if the suspect car is stolen, the insurance can try to claim the repair costs off of the police for not exercising due care when stopping it.

The police in the UK will refrain from pit maneuvers as much as possible because (especially at high speed) they can harm the criminal and officers in the UK try not to injure the criminal if they can help it, hence why boxing in is the chosen tactic. PIT manoeuvres are not considered a safe procedure and so are very rarely used. Over here they prefer a procedure called TPAC where they have a car on each side and slowly come to a stop

They didn’t pit because they need to be cautious about if the driver had a weapon and UK police aren’t as reckless as American police also it is most likely that the car would roll also the police car could be the one that rolls and pitting when the car is damaged could put everyone’s life in danger

Honestly I’ve watched police chases in the US where they wait ages before pulling any sort of stops out, shoot people for no reason, escalate things for no reasons and where they recklessly put members of the public at risk so… bit annoyed that you’re criticising our coppers

there is a big difference using a PITT with a Dodge Charger than with a VW Golf. The Golf would be totaled.

I believe the Pitt manoeuvre can't be used on front drive cars and as most in europe are front wheel drive there you have it and a TPAC manoeuvre is usually used successfully most of the time they use that but as below have mentioned I'm an avid fan of all these shows and most don't even go to prison for really bad infractions but the worse is watching someone get done for using a phone while driving and the fine them on the spot with auto points on and their in a Car with BLUETOOTH 😱 even a twenty dollar bluetooth handsfree sunshade does the same thing and they never mention any Bluetooth adapters which work out cheaper than a fine and points?????

6:00 Here in Britain, there are better ways than wrecking the car, for that, we use the stinger! 😃 The PIT maneuver could've caused the car to accelerate into the other side of the carriageway and caused more issues or could've worst, rolled, so it was better not to, also the car probably wouldn't stop moving in this guy's desperation.

If the driver was under the age of 18 (or it could be 16), they won’t let you see them. If the driver was under age for us to see them, chances are the car was stolen. So I can’t see an allowance off mummy or daddy paying to get him/her their bail money.

The police will only use the pit manoeuvre as a last resort, because of the danger to oncoming traffic and pedestrians on a normal road. They prefer to use what’s called tea pack which is a three car block

Whilst not all BMW drivers here in the UK are selfish, arrogant and "entitled" pricks, a very large proportion of them are. Is it the same in the USA? 🤔

It was noticeable during the first covid lockdown that the only vehicles you saw on the roads were German performance cars driven by self-entitled knobs using the then pedestrian filled roads as racetracks. The police did nothing, while fining people for standing in their own garden. If it is legal to stop and search someone on the street without cause just based on their skin colour as the Met Police do, I fail to see why German cars can't be routinely pulled over and searched.

Methinks you're laughing in the wrong place; the guy wasn't "showing off," he was deliberately weaving to prevent the the police deom getting in front again. \the proces for the police is called a "T-Pack," - one car get in front to slow the guy down, whhile the second car pulls alongside to stio the guy pulling out, Mormally there would be a third police car rhat completes the process by pulling in behind sp that there's nowhere for the guy to go. It's a highly risky maneouvre and takesa dome skill to match what the perp' does. Even with a flat tyre, weaving is the usual manner for these guys. If you had listened to the narrative instead of making your own ideas up, you would have understood. Ever heard of the term "Watch, Listen, Learn!" UK police always have to consider the general public, and the road they're on is a fast motorway, so they won't operate pit maneouvres that can easily go belly-up. If the guy takes a slip road into the town or village, the dangers are increased because of pedestrians, children, ladies with prams et, etc. The UK is nit the USA, and records show that these incidents rarely end up with ANYONE getting injured. Howvwer, you shake your head in a most derogatory way, suggesting that the police should behave in the way that you think - like you are some kind of expert. For a kid who can't use a single-button electric kettle, you're not half as smart as you like to think!

It’s a sad sight to see in todays times, when the driver of the BMW couldn’t give a monkeys about the safety of others because he only cares for himself. Driving high on cannabis and cocaine no doubt, while he’s lost sight of reality and the dangers he’s causing because he thinks it’s a computer game on Xbox called, Escape the cops or get busted! But when the driver is apprehended and sent to prison for a while, if that happens, perhaps he might recall what the police officer said to him, after they forcefully stopped his vehicle and change his ways. It’s a fools game what he’s playing because he will lose and pay the consequences for his actions. 7:45

British police have rules and regulations to follow they have to have permission for a t-pac manoeuvre not like amaerican cops just do it and create a catastrophe and deal with the consequences later British cops have to deal.with all the health and safety side of it there's the criminal also.the public so there's alot the cops higher up take into consideration and they do watch the chases and debate what should be done it's stupid I know what you mean just get it stopped but hey that's why our country is so soft
