If you still like the idea, from oversimplified I recommend "the russian revolution" PT. 1 & 2, although they a lot of good ones, and for "map men"... Any of them. But at the end of the day they are still some of the best players the world has ever seen and I'm happy to have seen them play as rivals to my favourite club and I have huge respect for each and everyone of them. Some of my favourite players of all time like Casillas, Kaka and Ozil have played for real Madrid too I even consider Ronaldo among my favourites. I've even rooted for Ramos every single time he's played for Spain😂. 9:13 It's a mix of show-off and useful moves. Actually, by showing-off he provokes the defender, pushing him to make a mistake and pass him. In a duel, the mindset of both players is very crucial, so provocation can lead to frustration, frustration can lead to mistake, or foul. Also, the moves by themselves are good because he uses a lot of feints, but always keeping the ball protected and you can see that the defender doesn't even dare try to take the ball because he know he risks to make a foul, or to create a breach.

Going to try and answer some of your questions using my personal view: 9:17 - Those moves are used to throw the defender out of balance, making it harder for the defender to predict his next move. Of course he has done it also for fun, but those moves have an objective (to throw down the opponents moral) 11:28 - Often times the team would leave it to him to "do his thing", although his first rising international moments were as someone who would build game for the team (playing as a very fast and accurate winger, example at 12:12), and even though he still does that a lot, it's not uncommon for him to be the first to reach the opponents defense. 12:38 - To catch the defender off-guard. And that is really to pass it to a team-mate who is in the "box" waiting for that assist to score. 21:29 - Counter-attacks is when your team's defense recovers the ball from the opponents attack and then attacks right away, leaving the opponent's team with less people to stand in your way. (Ronaldo often helps on defense duties and carries it on to the attack, where speed also has a big role to play (seen on this last European Cup tournament), something you don't see Messi doing as much). 22:00 - "El Classico" is a reference to when Real Madrid and Barcelona would face each other. 2 of the best teams in the world. This is to show how Ronaldo would also do what he wanted against some of the best players in the world. And you don't see Messi on this, because it's situations where Real Madrid is attacking and Messi rarely helps when his team - Barcelona - is defending. Hope I cleared some of those questions. Keep enjoying Football (not European Football or Soccer as it is played all over the world and it is actually played with your feet - Football) :) EDIT - Forgot to mention, for those who compare Messi and Ronaldo and say none has won anything for their country that, in 2016, Ronaldo won the European Cup tournament with Portugal. This was an historical moment as Portugal had never won it before in the whole competition's history.

The word "league title" always means a domestic league. The confusing part is that they are named differently in each country. The champions league despite its name is not a league, it's a cup competition between European clubs. The European championship (or "Euro", i.e. what's happening now) is a competition between national teams like the world cup. The nations league is new competition which is an attempt to create a league of national teams, no one really cares about it yet so don't worry about it.
@retrobua7460
@retrobua7460 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're right, the Nations League is an ATTEMPT to be a league :D. But actually it's just a mini-cup with relegation. You have your group stage and then it progresses to the knock-out round... just like the Euros. Completely stupid! They could have just made an acutal league with groups of 6-7 teams and have the winner of the highest group be the champion. Meanwhile get rid of the World Cup and Euro qualifiers and you don't have any additional games. The qualifications for the cups could be managed via the leagues (e. g. all of the league 1 teams are qualified, the best 5 of league 2, best three of league 3... and of course the champion of the lowest league for the obligatory underdog).

@@retrobua7460 to be fair in that sense it’s exactly like the Champions League 🤷🏼‍♂️ Both the Nations League and the Champions League are “attempting” or “pretending” to be a league competition but in each case only the beginning of the competition is made up of small “league” groups and then it becomes a knock-out competition. In fact, in the current format, for any given team the Champions League has a smaller proportion of its matches in the league phase than the Nations League does.

Cristiano's play style changed a lot through his career. When younger playing for Manchester United (An english team) he was flashier and seemed more 'arrogant'. In that team he played in the wings, dribbling the defenders to find a pass, a cross or even score. When he was playing for Real Madrid (A Spanish team) his style changed slowly. He dribbled less and became almost like a '9'. His objective there was to make counter-attack runs and, specially, score goals. He was one of the best at Manchester, and even won the 'player of the year' trophy there. But was in Real Madrid that he became a beast. He adapted his playstyle to officially become the greatest goalscorer of all-time. He would score shooting from any distance or any angle. He would score heading. He would score free-kicks and penaltys. He would score anyhow. At the same time he 'matured' and his 'arrogance' was seen as confidence and determination. That's what i think differs Messi and Cristiano. Messi it's the kind of player that beats you because he's so impredictable that you don't know what he's going to do next. Ronaldo (after Madrid) it's the kind of player that you know what's gonna do, but he beats you anyway. Here in Brazil we like to say that Messi is a 'magician' while Ronaldo is a 'robot'. Messi is a symbol of natural talent while Ronaldo is a symbol of practice and resolve. Sorry for any grammar mistakes, english isn't my first language =).

I kind of disagree. Yes when he came to United it was all about being flashy over anything else but that got knocked out of him bit by bit over the first couple of seasons as footballers in England will take a foul to teach you a lesson if they think you are showboating. That even carries over with your own team mates in training. In his last 3 seasons he was pretty much the player you saw at Real, he might have honed it a bit more as that's in his nature but you certainly don't score 31 Goal by being overly flashy. Infact in that season specifically a trademark became him, Tevez and Rooney combining to score goal after goal on the counter attack

Commenting a few minutes into the video; Basketball is one of the best analogies when it comes to football. There’s a lot more similarities than people realize and a lot of professional footballers love coming to the states to see NBA games because it’s basically sped up football but on a smaller scale. Both are free flowing, end to end style games when every player plays both offense and defense. The 3-point line is like the goal box, only it still counts as 1 in football. A free throw is equivalent to a penalty kick. Players in each sport ‘dribble’ the ball and there’s a lot of flair and tricks that comes along it. Post video; Here’s a few other football terms just in case you’re unfamiliar with them; El Classico - the name of the match between Real Madrid and Barcelona. The two Spanish heavyweights. Basically the biggest CLUB match every year due to the history and prestige of each club. It peaked in the early to mid 2010s because of Messi vs Ronaldo. Derby - rival match Example: Manchester derby = match between Manchester United and Manchester City North London Derby - Arsenal vs Tottenham (both NORTH London derby) Video Recommendation: Thierry Henry

Football is like basketball? Are you nuts? There is no similarity at all. A basketball court is 4,500 square feet, a football pitch can be 100,000+ square feet. Football is played non stop for at least 45 minutes per half. And, (here's the clue), football is played with the feet. Football is loved and watched by millions. Basketball is the most boring game on earth.

About the leagues that you talk about at the beggining: Explanation of European trophies Tier 1: Champions League (also written sometimes as UCL). That makes your team the European Champion. Top achievment. Tier 2: National league. This is what is called "league". It's Premier League in England, LaLiga in Spain, Serie A in Italy, Bundesliga in Germany, etc. If some player has "7 leagues" it means that has 7 national titles combining every country. Winning a league makes you the National Champion. E.g., Premier League Champions are English Champions. As College Basketball comparison, the Champions is like the March Madness and the League is like the Conference title. These two are the top trophies every season. Then: Tier 3: Europa League (European 2nd division) and National Cups (playoffs). Both considered major trophies but not as important as the others. Tier 4: Any other trophy. Most teams don't really care about them that much (except for teams that aren't usually contenders). You'll see trophies like Supercups, League Cups, Community Shield... but you don't really need to know them now. All of them are 'club' titles. Then, internationally you have the World Cup (the supreme-top-desired-title) And continental trophies (UEFA Euro in Europe, Copa América in South America, etc). World Cup is held every 4 years, and usually continental trophies are every 4 years too.

@zebiabzulius4653
@zebiabzulius4653 2 жыл бұрын
Very good explanation. This is how a team can win 'the double' = 2 trophies in one season or 'the treble' = 3 trophies in one season. This can be a domestic treble or an international treble. An example for an English football club below: Domestic treble (because all three trophies can be won only by English clubs) 1. Premier League winners 2. Fa cup winners 3. Carabao cup winners International treble (international because the champions league is played against teams across europe, very hard to win): 1. Premier League winners 2. Fa Cup or Carabao Cup winners 3. Champions League winners It is also possible to get all 4 of these trophies in one season. On top of that there is a minor tournament called the community shield which can also be won and counted as a trophy, as well as the club world cup. The club world cup is less prestigious because basically all the teams outside of Europe kinda suck. In the Americas, Africa and Asia there are equivalent tournaments to the champions league, with clubs from their respective continents. The winners from all these continents compete against each other in the club world cup and this is a trophy which can also be counted. This is however a very minor thing in the football world, and is not to be confused with the FIFA world cup, which is for national teams.
@albertojlosa

@@lukashora5993 In my opinion, cups are better, because the top teams in a cup are better than the top teams in the UEL. But some people consider more important winning a UEL than a cup since it's a European trophy. Probably it depends on the country.

Hi there! As a Portuguese myself I’m going to try to resume our national hero career. You just saw almost 20y of Ronaldo’s career footage and his football now with 35 changed a lot since he left Portugal. The first half of his career the way he played was outrageous: fastest man on the pitch, a lot of dribbling, a lot of freestyle with a ball and a lot of entertaining bits of football. That why we pay tickets right, it was fun! The second half of his career he had to adapt his style to be able to stay relevant and one of the greats of all time. He started to become more pragmatic, to score a lot more goals and to play a lot more wholesome instead of relaying only on speed or signature moves. Also because Messi kept his technical skills so high over the years and technically he is probably the best player in the world Ronald started to shift his own goals in football to breaking records in all competitions. Another think that separates Ronaldo from Messi is that Ronaldo played in the 3 major leagues in Europe (England, Spanish and now the Italian league) and he was champion and top goal scorer in all of these leagues. On the contrary Messi never left his comfort zone in Barcelona and I guess we’ll never know how Messi could adapt to other playing styles and dynamics of a different club or league. On a national level, Ronaldo also won 2 official tournaments for his country and Messi is yet to win any trophy. I’m not stating Ronaldo is better than Messi. As a Portuguese I have no problem saying that Messi is probably an alien on his own league, the ball gravitates towards him and he is a natural. Ronaldo on the other side is the result of hard work, discipline and accomplishment. He is more human in a way I guess.

@SoGal What sets Messi and Ronaldo apart are their mentalities to stay at the top for their whole careers. I would recommend watching highlights of Ronaldinho who was arguably the best ever with the ball but who’s mentality let him down and current player, Adama Traore - the fastest or most ‘explosive’ footballer - who has been coached to only ever run at 80% full speed so that he doesn’t end up alone on the other side of the pitch, because he doesn’t quite have that killer quality in front of goal, although his technique has improved, and of course you have to have excellent ball control whilst retaining the ball whilst running at high speed.

I am so impressed with your analysis of a sport you've hardly ever seen and had basically no previous exposure to. A note for you: when people talk "leagues" they generally mean club teams in a particular country, such as the Premier League in England, Serie A in Italy or LaLiga in Spain. We'd normally refer to the club team European competitions as The Champions League or the Europa league. These were traditionally knock-out competitions that have evolved into an initial league stage followed by a knock-out stage up to the final. International competitions are generally referred to as such. The biggest of course being the World Cup. In Europe there's the Euros which you've been following. There are equivalents in the other continents of course, such as the Copa America, which is also going on now. Argentina and Brazil are in the final which is also being played this Sunday I think (possibly Saturday your time?). Hope this helps and keep up the great work.

They have different playstyles. Messi lives in his own world where the only thing that matters is his relationship with the ball and his moves are the natural outcome of his desire to not let other people bother him, so no one has any idea what he will do next. Whereas Cristiano worked the same moves a million times, has an extensive bag of tricks and takes full advantage of his athletics that he also worked out to be in peak physique, so his unpredictability comes from the fact that he has more spatial awareness and positioning than most of the other players. Side note: the leg-cross dribble was performed by Maradona before Cristiano did it but it's probably even older. It's the correct way to kick the ball since the other foot is supporting the weight of the body and is unable to kick the ball without you falling to the ground. Most professional players can do it with no problem. As a disclaimer i am portuguese so everyone would expect that i would be bias towards Cristiano, but i'm not blind and although he is a wonderful player i can assure you that a player like Ricardo Quaresma (you might want to look him out also) is even more skilled than Cristiano, adding to the fact that Quaresma has a natural technique just like Messi. The reason why Cristiano has more honors is because of his work ethic and the fact that he, along with his family and his personal manager, were more savy or smart in managing his professional career, which in the end counts a lot for the degree of success that Cristiano has today. He learned how to be a footballer in the english club Manchester Utd between 2003 and 2009. Before that he was just a talented kid that made some tricks. Anyway i'm enjoying this series a lot so congratulations for your work at making these videos.

What you said hits the nail on the head, he is trained while Messi is a natural player. I would say it like this: Ronaldo has the perfect athlete body with an insane work ethic. You can feel that when he does stuff, he does it like someone that practised it a million times before. Messi on the other hand was born to play football specifically (Ronaldo could have been a top athlete in basically any sport he set his sight on, with his body and work ethic), he is small, there aren't many sports he could have done other than football. He also has an insane work ethic, but more to build his athletics, you can see that he doesn't practise tricks or skills, ball handling comes natural to him. In a sense you have to respect Ronaldo more, because you can see that he worked his butt off to compete with the natural talent that Messi has and that he is even near the same level is insane, on the other hand Messis natural talent is just out of this world. Messi is what you get when you engineer the perfect human to play football, especially his control and touch are outlandish.

One thing that I would disagree with ur statement is the way you portrait Ronaldo as a "football player purely worked". To become a player like Ronaldo and Messi u must have the talent and Ronaldo had and still has all the talent of the world (what he does on the pitch it's impossible if he had no talent and just worked hard for it). In simpler words, to become one of the best of all time u must have some talent because it can't be worked out...

You are deluded if you think Messi doesn't train his Dribbles either.... No player or human being reach the level of what these two did reach without training themselves on what they do. That idea of pure born talent, is romantic cliché and bogus. Of course Messi has talent, and of course Ronaldo has talent, just look at them when they were kids. But they had to work for it to be where they are.

him freestyling with the ball actually helps, it kinda looks like he's showing off but it helps because it confuses the opposing team into where he's going to kick the ball and it gives his teammates time to come closer and think of a way to score

the freestyling shown in the video was mainly timewasting (if they're in the lead then it's beneficial to not give the opposing team much time + it would be a dangerous tackle for a defender and easy to give out a free kick) but it's also to show off a little

You are correct that there is an element of "just showing off and having fun" to all of the tricks and flicks some players, Ronaldo certainly included do, not to beat players but seemingly just to confuse them. It's intimidating, quick feet, great balance and agility, practice, practice, practice, it's "I'm better than you and you will not take this ball from me".

I think you understand this really well. When you asked how much of his fancy footwork was necessary, you got it spot on, ''get the defender to commit'' then you have him. Also your Basketball analogy's a really good one and I personally think the reason 'Soccer' is so popular Worldwide is the pure simplicity of not being allowed to use ones most dexterous limbs ie the arms and legs. That's how simple Soccer is.

I enjoyed watching this way more than I thought I would. As a European football-crazy fan who immigrated to the US it was really refreshing to see how much actual insight you get from this video why C. Ronaldo is special, why he does what he does (and why not) and how he is so different from Messi. In the end the beauty is in the eye of the beholder...I think Messi has more natural talent than C. Ronaldo does, but I enjoy watching Ronaldo play way more. Only two footballers come to mind who were more joyful to watch...Dennis Bergkamp and Ronaldinho. As a ps. my (American) wife and I made the deal, she would watch football (soccer) with me, and I would watch American Football with her. We both concluded they are both fantastic sports as soon as you have enough insight to recognize what makes a certain move, thought, play, tactic etc brilliant. Go Pack Go!

Making the world cup as the criteria for determining who's the GOAT and who's not is a an argument made by old heads and casuals. The world cup is a tournament held every four years, so all the Great players have maximum three shots at it while they're in their prime, also, players can't choose their nation, so it's not the player's fault if they're stuck with a bad nation or generation (Only eight countries won the world cup) this alone should put into perspective how hard it is to win it. The real criteria for determining the GOAT are : Ballon D'ors (our version of MVP), golden boots, champions League/domestic leagues, longevity, talent.
