3:35 "Gotta be like 6'4" at least" Bro, he's 6'8" (~203cm). I've had the honour of attempting to tackle him in high school and getting wiped. Let's just say this: My ego and dreams of playing professional rugby vanished after that incident xD. Schoolboy stories are the funniest though. To be fair, I'm only 6'1" (188cm). He was a beast back then though with height, weight and technical superiority , even at age 15-16, and we all knew he would become a Springbok without a doubt. Extra info: Although I was only 188cm, I did weigh around 90kg at the time. Still no match for Eben. I remember him gaining a lot from ages 15 to 18. Each year he'd progressively get bigger and bigger but following a natural curve of weight gain (say 5-9kg a year). While in 10th grade and walking in the school passage between classes, I remember seeing this giant 9th grader (Eben) walk past me and one of my classmates remarked, "Hierdie ou is kak goed in Rugby" which means "This dude is f'in good at Rugby". He wasn't wrong although I arrogantly thought that he was "too skinny" and probably not that good. My opinion changed when we met him during rugby practice... Another silly story I remember: There was a fight at school, or rather a verbal confrontation I should say, between two groups of dudes. I vividly remember Eben (17 at the time) coming from the shadows, towering over everyone and making his way through the crowd to the middle where people were shouting. I stood far away and couldn't hear anything, but he already had his intimidating smile at that time. Everyone went quiet, he said something which was inaudible to me and everyone parted and walked away. Random photo of what he looked like in school: i.prcdn.co/img?regionKey=C9pGkpC1aRe1%2F8QOJA%2By%2Bw%3D%3D 2023 Story update: I remember when he got into grade 8 and joined the high school. He was a short, skinny guy. I'd say about 153-158cm and about 55kg. He played backline as mostly a wing, if I recall correctly. Sometimes he played centre, flyhalf and fullback. He was in the B team, not even the A team, up until like 11th grade. Now, it's important to note that he had a gigantic growth spurt and grew about 50cm and picked up over 50kg. It's very rare you see someone from being a track athlete sprinter and high jumper, playing wing and growing into a giant lock, being too heavy to even be lifted in the lineout ito the averge high school player. Being in the backline gave him the ability to be a good runner and agile player. Also, to dispel a popular myth: No, he's not a dumb guy. He's quite intelligent. I'm not saying he's a genius or anything, but he had relatively good marks, definitely way above average. He also wasn't aggressive: yes, his two uncles Cliffie and Skattie were (unfairly) infamous for bar fighting, he was quite the opposite and learned a lot from his straight and narrow father who's a policeman. Regarding his uncles, they were extremely nice people the few times I had the honour of meeting the legends. It was mostly arrogant drunkards who would challenge them as simpletons do. Sometimes, they would stand up for others only to be later called the aggressors. I'm not saying they never caused trouble, especially when times were tougher for them, but the "toughmen uncles" I got to meet and talk to were genuinely nice people.

Awesome story man👍 I've been watching the Springboks since the days of Jake White back in 2004 when they won the then Tri-Nations and at the time there wasn't a lock forward more intimidating than Bakkies Botha. The first time I heard of the name Eben Etzebeth was during the 2015 RWC and I immediately said this guy is special. You were one of the few lucky ones that witnessed greatness at it's grassroots. SA is blessed with big locks. Etzebteth, De Jager, Pieter-Steph, Snyman etc just to name a few.

As a couple of others have mentioned but not emphasised, the no 2 player Eben bumped over at 6.06 mins, Bismark du Plessis, was himself always regarded as probalby the hardest man on any pitch. Supremely strong and one could never imagine him playing second fiddle to any man on a pitch. And in this incident, Bismark went flying, but also, almost seemed concused for a while after, like a boxer taking a punch and being wobbly legged and confused.

6 ft 5 270 and 100m in cant remember if it was 10.6 or 10.8 seconds, also smashed nearly all the athletic records at high school. Even more interesting is he played his rugby career suffering from a crippling kidney disorder. A lomu at 60% was better than majority at 100%. Him and his agent never signed a single paper. Everything was handshake deals and neither of them ever strayed. Was a massive ambassador for the game, eventually succumbing to his kidney disorder at 40. Taken far too young and most people wouldnt know he played his last proffessional game which was an exhibition match inbetween daily dialysis treatments. I love NFL as well as Rugby Union. Gronk is a fantastic player, and he always creates exciting plays when the play caller gives him an opportunity. I do wonder how he would do for two non-stop 40 minute halves as opposed to the very deliberate pace of NFL. The ability of these big men to keep running for 40 minutes straight while taking the ball to contact, scrummaging, jumping at lineouts and making big tackles is part of what makes them exceptional. Etzebeth runs 40 yards in in 4.22 seconds, is 6'8" tall and weighs 269lb. Gronk runs 40 yd in 4.6 sec, is 6'6" 265lb. I'd say Gronk is a nicer, slower, lighter, shorter Etzebeth.

Just to correct your close guess on his height ... he is 6ft 8" and weighs around 122kg's (just short of 270lbs). You got his name fairly accurately with the exception of his first name. The first 'E" in Eben is pronounced like in ear "Earbin"

Your correct he is like Gronkowski 💯 What you should know is the number 2 he bumped off in the clip is also as strong as an bison.

Etsebeth is 6.8 and weighs about 260 pounds. But consider this, Jonah Lomo was 6.5 and weighed about 265 pounds and was as fast as a runaway freight train. Man, what an athlete and this from a South African. He didn't bother running around or bobbing and weaving, he just took the shortest route to the try line and that was run right over his opponent. Again as a South African I have to throw this in though (just to save face) and that is that Lomo never scored a try against the Springboks. They were terrified of him and just marked him that well. He didn't stand a chance, they just dogpiled him. RIP to him and James Small ( his opponent in the Rugby 1995 World Cup and bona fide hardass who took shit from nobody)) , another warrior that died too young. Go Bokke.

Suggestion: Learn how Rugby is organized in Forwards and Backs. Learn what the numbers mean. What's a Scrum Half, a Fly Half, etc. We don't have separate teams for offense and defense like AF.

Eben is absolute gentle giant off the field. Looks deceive as he so far in his career was hardly ever sanctioned for violence on field. BUT rub him up wrong he will take you on by just staring you down and that is a frightening sight down Look for a game in 2022 against Australia (2nd test) and you will see what I mean

American football mild compared to our rugby. All that padding & protection! Rugby football ( it was originally called) was created by William Webb Ellis who picked up the ball and ran with it in his arms during a football game at Rugby School in England in 1823. It hasn’t changed much since then. Rugby League is great to watch!
