I've got the Yamaha 4.4 V8 in my XC90. Lovely engine. One of my favourite little known Volvo stories is that, before they chose Yamaha to build the largely Volvo-designed V8, Volvo approached Cosworth to build them something special for the forthcoming S80. Cosworth delivered a handful of prototype engines which were essentially two 850 engines joined at the crank. It was a 4.3 litre naturally aspirated quad cam V10. The best part is, Volvo fitted 5 of them to 850 mule cars and did a bunch of heat soak testing around Gothenburg, so there were a bunch of 850s with enormous V10 engines shoehorned under the bonnet driving around Sweden in the 1990s. Wild. I wish at least one of those cars had survived.
@JamesField3 ай бұрын
@@maciejgajoch1774 I think you're thinking of the early transverse 6 cylinder engines. They were too long to fit with the standard Aisin-Warner automatic transmission, so they fitted a smaller General Motors box, which was too weak. Later iterations had a shorter inline 6 (SI6) engine, allowing the stronger Aisin-Warner shifter to fit. I haven't heard of any problems with the transmission on the V8, other than it needs a fluid change every 100k miles or so. Mine's a little overdue at 140k miles, but still smooth. Will probably get it done at the next service.
@jasonnelson66243 ай бұрын
@@JamesFieldI cant speak for @maciejgajoch1774 but it's a know issue with the xc90's or at least for 2007. I'm pretty sure that whole generation was at risk. Not sure if it was due to lack of proper maintenance or maybe due to abuse. But I had a friend who was an independent Volvo mechanic, and when I was considering an xc90 because of that motor. He warned me about their transmission. He said the vechicle was still great. Of course I understand that hasnt been your experience. Which is more valid then me not having any experience, with xc90's totally understand that.

Volvo 940 (1991-1998) was the last one with RWD. 6:40 Volvo 850 (1992-1997) came with FWD/AWD and every model after that. The orange wagon at 2:11 is a V70 (1997-2016), originally with FWD, so it's converted to RWD. The black one you liked at 2:24 is a S60 (2000-2009). The 240 wagon (1975-1993) at 3:12 is 4 cyl. Almost all earlier Volvos had a 4 cyl, until 850 which introduced the 5 cyl "T5" with it's unique sound (it's a popular engine to put in the older RWD models). The white hatch at 5:51 is a Volvo C30 (2006-2013). The petrol engines in older (RWD) Volvos are considered highly reliable. The diesel in those are actually a Volkswagen D24, they've gained a cult among young Swedes (why I dunno, but they are often paired with a hood pipe like you see at 10:40). The prices over there are crazy. Yeah, they've rocketed here in Sweden too. I just searched and found a red Volvo 240 1992 with 124.000 miles on it for 2400USD. That's a fair price here.

You should really check out the P1800! My father has one that I am ccurrently mostly driving and has done repairs on in the last couple of years, so if you have questions about P1800s I can definitely help with that. Great video as always, especially for a volvo lover like me :)

The military had Volvo engines in a lot of jeeps, trucks and tracked vehicles. At my regiment, one of the tracked vehicles, that could swim, sunk. It was in the late fall so they left it there cause they didnt have the gear to recover it. Come spring they lifted it out, changed oil and battery, started on first try

We have had a white 1963 Volvo 544, a golden 1975 Volvo 144 GL and a green 1977 Volvo 244 DL in my family. And yes they did make 6 cylinder versions too. In early 100 and 200 chassis versions the middle digit tells you directly the number of cylinders and the last one tells you the number of doors. So, a 142 was a four cylinder two door model. A 245 was a four cylinder 5 door model.

I once had a 1984 740 GLE with automatic trans. My park brake (e-brake) didn't work, so when i took hand-brake-turns, I just put it in R and kicked the throtle... Turned on the spot! 👌😁 It died of rust a few years after I sold it 🙄

the volvo's you hear with different engine sounds are mostly engine swaps. volvo 240/260/740/760/940/960 came only (4cylinder, with or without turbo) or 6cylinder, or diesel called the d24. but in sweden its very popular to put in the v8 from bmw e39 and e38. because in sweden it is easy to register a car with a engine from another car. :)

The big problem is the cold battery, do the first tries shorter and wait a minute or to in be twin, so the battery heat up, at -30C you have maybe 10% power in a battery, a couple of tries raises the temp in the battery and the power so you will maybe get to 50% and much better chance to start.

prices today is insane, even here in Sweden.When i got my license (1999) we were a group of friends that planned to start rallying so we bought alot of volvos (mainly 240) changed the steeringwheel and then just went out at night driving on gravel roads in the forests. often pretty much intended to not have the car last for more than 1-2 nights. in one summer we probably bought 20+ cars. if i remember correctly the most expensive one was like 300-400 dollar but most of them were 100dollar or less since it was cars that wouldnt pass the next inspection.(the gas was usually the biggest expense so we tended to share that cost in the group. would have been an expensive hobby today but it was really fun! (and not very safe lol like more or less intentionally rolling a car without rollcage is just stupid in hindsight :) had a pretty nice volvo 240 as my regular car aswell around 2007 i think, that was bought in pretty good condition for 950$ and that felt pretty expensive at the time but i think that was when they started going up in price but was a great backup/winter car if you had something more sporty in the summer

The hot hatchback Volvo is called the C30. I remember when they were first introduced to the public. The commercial was hesitant to call the back of it nice, it went something like: "we like the ass, what do you think?" Because it was of revolutionary design a very carefull worded commercial was promoted. Well, I for one, like that C30-ass!!

Interesting to hear all these ideas about Volvo. Thing is they were never really competitive in rallying but the 850 were decent competing in the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) where they initially used a station wagon and still performed decently, though the following years they shifted to running a saloon the following years. The 850R from 96 is probably the fastest of them and it topped out at about 250 HP. The engine was probably capable of a lot more, in fact the first time they showed it they had mounted a dual turbo and pressed it to about 500 HP but that never were a version they sold. And yes the engine was straight five cylinders. The "Brick" was basically the 140, 240, 740, 760 and 780 series. Of these the 700 series were really brick shaped in the rear. All of them were also rear drive so they match your idea of a car capable of drifting. Though the basic models really didn't have the power for it. The 140 series started at about 70 HP. With a better camshaft, dual carburetors and a lightened flywheel it would make 120 HP from factory. I know as I had one. The 240 wasn't all that hot and neither was the 740. The 760 topped out with a 6 cylinder engine making 182 HP while the 870 topped out at 200 HP. The 760 is less common than the 740 and only 8518 Volvo 780 were ever produced so they should be very hard to find today. The last rear wheel drive cars made by Volvo was the 940 and 960 series. the 4 and 6 in this case tell you the number of cylinders in the engine. These were built using almost only old tech in a new design shell so they were extremely dependable but also thirsty just like the former cars ever since the 140 series. These topped out at a 190 HP with a turbo. The 940 changed name eventually and became the S90 for the sedan and V90 for the estate wagon.

Before Polestart became the brand name for Volvo's electric cars, the name was used by the division in Volvo working with cars for STCC, Swedish Touring Car Championships(?) They made a C30 Polestar, a version of the small white hatchback in the video, which then was produced in a small number of road cars. 405hp... would be fun to own. I think.

The Volvo P1800 is the car that has driven the furthest in history. It was owned by an American man, don't remember how many trips around the world it was in total. But it was surely impressive. The bus that has ran the furthest in history was also a Volvo that ran in the mountains of South America. The engine was gifted back to Volvo and is now on display in the Volvo Museum, Gothenburg. I have my Volvo V70 from 1997 myself, it's fantastic.

Hello! In Norway, there are many Volvo 240-242-244 for sale, and the prices for the nice ones are from about 14,500 dollars and below. But you can also get one for 32,000 dollars, but this one has a 2.5l with a big turbo, which gives about 500 horsepower, and the car has been built from the ground up, with new paint and engine and gearbox.

With the old RWD bricks, I favor the petrol ones, as those are the Volvo redblocks, the diesel is a VW engine from the old Vans/trucks VW used to make just called LT, in the 240 it's NA, the 740 gets a turbo, and the 940 gets turbo and intercooler, so if ya wanna go for a diesel, go for the 940 one. Also, one of the first clips with a 240 on a skid pad, it had an engine swap.. a V10... I've owned a few 240s myself, so they have a special place in my heart, but you get a model in the US of the Volvo S80, with a Yamaha V8 engine, and you could get them with AWD, so an AWD V8 Volvo luxury sedan... we didn't get the V8 in Norway, maybe a few special order, but they're very rare. And on the Volvo hatchback, the white one was a C30, the rear end is designed that way as a homage to the P1800 wagon/hatchback/shooting brake, but in the 90s there was another FWD Volvo hatchback which I kinda love, even if it didn't have proper Volvo engines, but it was a Bertone designed hatchback Volvo with pop-up headlights, the Volvo 480, which did come as a Turbo version as well.

just going to put it out there, many of the clips are from volvos with swapped engines. atleast the 7/940 ones. the grey sedan where you talked about how deep it sounded for a 4 or 5 cyl, is in fact a bmw v8 with a turbo. i don't know the guy personally but it's been seen a few times on a couple of meets around where i live. the 2/4/940's only came with 4 cyl and 6 cyl's (6 cyl is never used for tuning applications). some are also swapped with the 850 t5 engine (fwd originally).
