Eurovision mostly started as a way to experiment and try something different as a way to unite people all over europe since you know, even if u don't understand anything, music really is a universal language. It wasn't mentioned in this video, but the original reason for the ESC was togetherness not competitiveness. The European powers wanted a fun way to get people to like each other again after WW2. That's part of why this is such a spectacle with so little lasting controversy. It's not really about whether or not your country wins, it's about all these groups touring Europe and doing a big show together.
@pok81

i think it's still that way. Or does anybody really feel a lot of competition in it? For me this was always a fun show where it's nice to win but not much worse to lose 😄 .. so not taken too seriously. And that's the way it should be.

@@WookieWarriorz Well what I was saying was there was a time in Eurovision history when they had to sing in their own language...Namely 1966-1973 and 1977-1999. Sadly I am not in charge of the song contest and can't do anything about Ireland singing in Irish. They have always sung in English, as far as I know, as 98% of the country speak English and have done since the eighteenth century, even though both Irish and English have official language status. I would say that it is probably up to Ireland to choose what language they sing in, as I don't have any say in the matter, but they probably choose English over Irish for the above reasons I have stated but could if they so wish, sing in Irish if they wanted regardless of what the rules of the song contest state at the time of entry. If you feel strongly about this subject matter, I would suggest starting up a petition seeing what the Irish people's feelings are about it. You never know, maybe the Irish people might wish for their next entrant's song to be sung in Irish and not English.

Contrary to popular belief, the Eurovision Song Contest is NOT just for Europe. It gets its name from Eurovision, the television company that created it in the 1950s. Entry to the contest is for any FULL member of the European Broadcasting Union and ASSOCiATE members thereof. This means that apart from European countries, it is ALSO open to ALL African countries along the Mediterranean coast (and much of the rest of Africa,) much of Asia (including China and Japan,) New Zealand and Australia, much of South America and even Canada and the US. Basically, almost 2/3 of the countries in the world COULD take part if they so chose to do - most do not because of the cost of entering and the cost of hosting should they win.
@xway2
@xway2 15 күн бұрын
only full members have automatic access to enter, and only countries in the European Broadcasting Area can be full members. Probably the most unexpected country that could in theory enter if they wanted is Saudi-Arabia. The countries to win the most is sweden(won their 7th time in 2023)and ireland who have also won 7 times, and the 2nd place joined is UK, The Netherlands, France and Luxembourg I think with 5 wins, 3rd Israel with 4 wins, and 4th is Norway, Italy, Ukraine, and my country Denmark to have won 3 times.

Eurovision is not only a song contest. It was set up as a European wide television service, for news etc. The Song Contest is just the most famous use of the service, the others gradually falling away & little used.

Ireland has never won Eurovision singing their native language - therefore ABBA is not the first representative to not sing in their own language. Ireland never has sang in their native language. Irish is still spoken to this day and there are even some ppl in Ireland who only know how to speak Irish. And yes Ireland has had Irish songs up for application to the contest.

The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual song contest organized by the European Broadcasting Union EBU. In which all EBU members can participate. The Israeli public broadcasting company is a full member of the EBU, which gives it the right to participate in the competition. Associate members of the EBU are e.g. Australia, China, India, USA and Canada. I don't know why out of the associate members only Australia participates in the competitions.

I get the not wanting arts to be "competitive" but keeping the origins of the Eurovision Song Contest in mind, I think it's a good tradition to have a friendly rivalry about writing and performing songs to remind ourselves what the alternative would be (A Europe at war).

The best thing about Eurovision is the gentle mocking of each countries songs, and or intro videos by our UK host on VO. It used to be the late, great broadcaster Terry Wogan (Irish) and now we have Graham Norton, also Irish, who is a perfect successor, also gently mocking of any entries that deserve a light mockery. Nothing offensive, just calling out weirdness, like "this man seems to be stuck in a spiders web, seems like a very unfortunate situation to be in, but what do I know". But he gives credit where it's due for a good song/staging/performance.

The reason you have the intro videos is because all of the acts are performing on the same stage so they need a few minutes to clear out the previous act and set up for the next act, I think you would love Eurovision if you watched it live, it's crazy

Fun fact: Have you ever heard of Riverdance? An Irish dance troupe that was a huge, world-wide success in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They had their big break in 1994, when Ireland hosted Eurovision AGAIN in Dublin. They gave a 7-minute performance during the interval, after all the songs had been performed and voting was going on. Nobody really remembers the winning song or artist, but Riverdance was an absolute sensation!

I love how at the beginning only Israel and Australia are highlighted as non-European countries are outed when in fact Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan also are Asien countries and part of ESC for quite some time :D Whether a country is invited to the ESC though has nothing to do with whether that country belongs to Europe or not. EBU is alliance of public media services and organizations which i.e. regulate the exchange of data between members of that union. ESC is basically just a byproduct of their business and there are actually plenty more countries with a membership in that club. There are even African countries like Morocco, Tunesia or Egypt or middle-east states like Lebanon, Lybia or Jordania in it which theoretically could participate in the ESC. While Australia is not within the "natural broadcasting area" of the EBU, it though acquired an association member status by simply applying for it. This is usually done in order to simplify the exchange of data among various telecommunication networks. On the list of countries with an association member status are also countries like Brazil, China or the United States. Australia was allowed to participate in the yearly ESC as these seem to like that format and in 2015 they basically were allowed to join the ESC for a guest appearance. As this guest visit was really perceived positive by plenty of member broadcasters they were invited next year againg, but this time with a permanent slot and since then they have been regular members of the ESC community. In 2022 EBU also tried to establish a partner program called ASC (American Song Contest) which held several rounds of preselection rounds per state whose winner then had to compete against winners of other states in a couple of rounds till they had shortlisted 10 winners which they then let compete in a nation-wide show. The format was perceived with mixed reacitons, according to Wikipedia. In the end EBU stopped the project due to a lack of promotion and "quality" of the shows as American broadcaster CBN obviously didn't want to take care of and invest money into the organization.

The basis of the Eurovision Song Contest is the European Broadcast Union which is an alliance of public broadcasters in the European Broadcasting Area (which includes non-European areas - like those bordering on the Mediterranean and as far east as Azerbaijan. One of the jobs of the EBU is to provide television feed between countries so for many many years there was a satellite dish on the West Bank which fed Israel and Jordan with television signals even though they were at war the cables were not cut! Eurovision is a style of its own so saying that's very Eurovision puts it in a niche but it has been going for 78 years! It is worth having a look at the compilations of the winners over the years (and the second placed too) They tell you a great deal about a slice of European culture.

That's exactly what they did two years ago. Sadly, the show didn't catch on. I enjoyed the show, there were some bangers there so although they seem to have gone back to the drawing board as there was no ASC this year, they are probably re-evaluating their approach to the concept and I hope they'll return with a more solid approach either this year or next year.

They had an american song contest in 2022 I think, but the setup was a bit more like American idol with cut to commercial breaks etc but they had the Eurovision rule of that it had to be an all new original song, and there was 5 rounds/semifinals or more I think before the finale because of the many states and teritories compeeting and because each round and also the finale was not longer than 1 h 30 min if I remember correctly, because I guess longer time would be too much for American viewers or some american rule? I can only guess. The hosts was Snoop Dogg and Kelly Clarkson. The winner was a young woman half american half korean singing a kpop inspired song. I don't remember which state she represented. I don't know if it was not that big of a succes since they haven't continued it. Maybe it lacked some of the things/atmosphere that made Eurovision so special, at least it felt like it a bit when I watched it, but nice try.

Some acts who didn't win, went on be one hit wonders, because their songs were so unusual. The biggest controversy of the Eurovision Song Contest was Spain under Franco cheating to win, the year Cliff Richard competed with Congratulations. The winning song from Spain was only a minor hit, but Congratulations written by two well known British pop song writers of that era, became such a big international hit, that was so big, those greetings cards with sound chips in play it. One of the years that Ireland hosted the show, after winning the contest the year before, featured the first television appearance of Riverdance, as a showcase act, that is the stage entertainment, but not in the competition.
