Piggybacking on this e-mail because YT's censors forced me to. 1. As noted, the ACTUAL Brian Eno has a silent bit-part in the first two minutes. 2. One can't dismiss the theory that they may have accidentally hastened Dermot's demise via the Shaft dance scene. 3. Ike Hayes as motivator is one thing, but using Radiohead to represent depressing music? Ten years earlier they would have cited Leonard Cohen...also....the song is "Exit Music" (exit as in suicide) If you have trouble coping with Radiohead's original version, don't listen to Katharine Blake's cover. (Unless you're one of her worshipful fanboys). 4. Play the Bee Gees? The band that gave us I Started A Joke, and Really Sincerely, and Odessa, and Dearest...no, even the Gibberish Brothers are not-for-the-suicidal.

Really sad, he wanted to go on to do bigger things. Apparently it wasn't the representation of him that he really wanted to get out there. Here's something interesting that the guy who played the depressed priest said: "I played this very depressed priest in Father Ted and Ted had found out he was going to America. "So he had to dance to this Shaft music and, for whatever reason, the producers didn't think I was doing it right so I had to do it over and over again. "We done it three times and I kept messing it up. "Dermot was wrecked and kept saying, ' I can't do it anymore, I'm exhausted' and the producers were telling him he kept having to do it because I kept messing it up. "I did that episode on the Friday and I was coming home from London on the Sunday morning and I was getting the taxi from Dublin Airport into town and the taxi driver turned around and said to me, 'You'll never guess who died - Father Ted'. "I made it to his mass in England and I was sitting beside Ardal (who played dougal) and the coffin was just coming past us and he whispered in to my ear, 'You killed Father Ted'. And I just burst out laughing in the middle of the mass."

Some dark trivia - during the Shaft scene, Tommy Tiernan (Father Kevin) repeatedly fluffed his lines, meaning Dermot Morgan had to do the dance several times. By the end he had chest pains, a sign of the heart attack that would kill him 24 hours later.

Dermot's death had nothing to do with that. I'm not sure if they even filmed it, I think they axed it while it was in the script. If it was filmed, it was still decided against going ahead, even before Dermot's death. You can actually find the script for the original ending here though www.reddit.com/r/BritishTV/comments/5j1td8/father_ted_alternate_ending_script_from_father/

@@Robert___98 Actually, Dermot's death did have something to do with it, and they hadn't decided to definitely axe it before. Apparently, the vision of Jack as a kindly, handsome old man was the writers' way of thanking Frank Kelly for his role in Father Ted. He had to spend hours a day in hideous make-up that made him unbearable even to look at, and mostly he had to just sit in a chair and shout profanities. Now we get to see what Frank really looked like back then, and also what he was actually like in real life - gentle, cultured and a good singer.

This really is the end of an era. To my knowledge the only other time you seen them in a church was in 'And God Created Women' when the writer Polly Clarke came to stay, and Ted wanted to do that quick mass so that he could go on a date with her the same night. You were literally speechless at the end, looking forward to the documentary.

Yes, even his priestly work wasn't referred to much, though visiting nuns were quite fans, saying that Father Crilly 'gave good mass'. I think Ted himself was described by the writers as being 'not very religious - to him, being a priest was just a job'. Dougal presumably collected enough tokens on cereal packets to get the curate post.

The greatest comedy show ever made. Written by 2 Irish men with an incredible sense of farce and humour!! The best. This episode is wonderful. It will always be tinged with sadness. Not only the last episode, but also what happened to Dermot. The ending stirs the emotions a lot, even now watching this for the 200th time ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️ I met Dermot Morgan in 1997, in Dublin. Christmas time. He was in a queue and my Dad handed me a pen and paper. I went up to him, apologised for intruding......and asked for his autograph. He stayed silent, gave me a small smirk....and signed his autograph. Didn't say a word to me. I thanked him and left. It was December 1996. Thank you good Sir, and the whole cast and crew. see, the ending flashback compilation just played again.....and a tear came from my eye ❣️

From what I've read somewhere, behind the scenes Tommy Tiernan (who played the depressed priest) kept flubbing his hands during the dance scene and Dermot had to keep doing the dance, despite pains in his heart. Some years later, Tiernan said that he thinks it might've contributed to Morgan's fatal heart attack the following day. Also, there was an originally filmed ending that they made involving Ted and the depressed priest jumping together, that was abandoned in favour of the closing montage as a result of Dermot's death, and the writers apparently didn't think it was a good ending either. Nonetheless, still a good show that makes generations of people laugh all these years later.

You can't help but get hooked by the characters (and the actors playing them). When the show finally ends it's like saying good bye to old friends. The tragic death of Dermot Morgan at the age of 46 was really really sad: "Morgan, who starred as Father Ted Crilly on the classic Irish sitcom, died suddenly after suffering a heart attack in London back in 1998. His tragic passing came just a day after filming had wrapped on the third and ultimately final series of the hit show. O'Hanlon made his name alongside Morgan as the dim-witted Father Dougal Maguire admitted he was left “reeling” following his friend's sad death, which came just hours after they had toasted the success of Father Ted together at a wrap party."

I have loved your reactions to Father Ted, mate. I’m glad you’ve loved it so much. I still rewatch it and it’s just as funny now as it was when first broadcast. I remember wondering all those years ago how the last episode would play out. I had heard rumours that Ted was originally going to join Kevin on the window ledge (later confirmed by the writers), but out of respect for Dermot Morgan, they chose to go with a reverse montage of clips from all previous episodes. I loved it. Especially with the poignant rendition of the Father Ted theme. It got the message across beautifully; although Ted’s dreams will never come true, and he’ll be on Craggy Island forever with Dougal, Jack and Mrs. Doyle...there IS something really comforting and familiar about being part of a strange family in a place that never changes. The end of an era. But looking forward to your future reactions! 👍🏻

The Navan stand-up said in a TV3 documentary O'Hanlon joked that Tiernan had sent Father Ted to his grave. He added: "I played this very depressed priest in Father Ted and Ted had found out he was going to America. "So he had to dance to this Shaft music and, for whatever reason, the producers didn't think I was doing it right so I had to do it over and over again. "We done it three times and I kept messing it up. 27:10, this is pretty much how I feel when a great show finishes, feeling of loss, the end of an era, sadness knowing you can never watch the show for the first time ever again.

If you loved Father Ted you would love Derry Girls. Another amazing irish comedy, 12 episodes total with both Ardal O'Hanlon (doughal) & Tommy Tiernan (Fr Kevin) featured in it

Also produced by Hat Trick and picked up by Channel 4. Its a well written show all things considered but I am unfairly comparing it to Father Ted a lot. 12 episodes in and its great stuff.

It is emotional. This was a time when I was half my age now. It wasn’t even long ago really, but this is when comedy was excellent in the UK. Thanks for showing it all. Imo there’s no way it should go into a category anywhere near the inbetweeners. They’re not a patch on Father Ted. Not even close. May the greats we’ve lost here rest in peace. The guys are dearly missed. Take care Taffe

What a journey. Your reaction at the end was one of the most genuine you'll see on any reaction channel. Especially from an American who would have probably never watched this show had it not been because you chose to react to it. It's a very sad end to what I still say is the best sitcom of all time. Dermot dying so young just after this episode wrapped is always going to be eternally sad but Father Ted lives on forever.

It’s weird to think, I mean a lot has happened In my life in these past 2 years but the one thing that has stayed the same was father ted every month, I’d only seen a few episodes prior to your reactions and was always keen to try it so it’s worked out perfectly. Now I can say I’ve seen every episode of father ted and it’s definitely a show I really enjoy. I could of watched it fully in my own time but I decided to go on the journey with you, savour it

I feel this is an underrated episode jokes wise but it will always be overshadowed by the ending of the show and particularly the sadness of Dermott's death. I always liked the end though, seeing the memories. Bittersweet.

Hey Taffe316, the original ending was Father Ted on the ledge of the building like Father Kevin (Tommy Tiernan) at the start of the episode but it was poorly seen at the screening & with Dermot Morgan’s death, it was changed.

The only other time I can think where they show Ted at church is the episode where he has a crush on that writer and gives a really quick sermon so he can go meet her, but that's a really short scene.

In answer to your question, they filmed Fr. Ted in order. With regards to individual episodes, some scenes are actually filmed prior to the audience recording (mostly external scenes and often a couple of scenes where an audience reaction to a sudden reveal to something otherwise off camera on the set is usually filmed on the same set the afternoon before the audience arrive). The audience will see the entire episode played out in the order we see it on television. Most British sitcoms are filmed this way and yes, Dermot became unwell during the wrap party that evening after they filmed the last episode's live scenes in front of a studio audience. Incidentally, despite the Irish setting, the studio scenes were all recorded in The London Studios, in the heart of London, an excellent studio for this kind of show as its main studio is very wide, allowing more sets to be presented to the audience compared to most other UK based studios.

Thank you for doing this series in full. This series was such a big part of childhood. Brings back memories of watching to this with my Dad howling with laughter. The writing and acting is at such a high level and the way you come to love the characters is so quick. Graham Linehan also wrote Black Books and it would be great if you did more of that in the future. You will see the similarities come through and laugh just as loud.

Hey Taffe316, I absolutely loved your reaction to the Father Ted series, I was in secondary school in Ireland when it was first on, it was pure class to watch much to the annoyance ironically of our local priest, this is the first time I have seen the final episode since it first came out and it got me quite emotional, I was in College in the uk in first year when I got a call from my mother on the communal phone to tell me that Dermot Morgan had passed away, it was the first time I ever truly experienced a sense of loss in my life and I had never even met the man, it was amazing that the series provided so much enjoyment and to so many, I had the same feeling as when you finished the series, it got at me in a way I hadn’t expected... My they Rest In Peace Dermot Morgan (Father Ted Crilly) , Frank Kelly (Father Jack) and Pat Laffan (Pat Mustard) , Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Dougal) and Pauline McLynn (Mrs.Doyle) are still both alive and well at the time of writing this, thanks to you all for so much joy in my life :)

That melancholy piano version of the Father Ted theme that is played after Ted gets off the plane is the tune that I hear whenever I leave Ireland for long term work. I love the country but the work is always elsewhere, and it always makes me initially sad when I leave.
