I have NEVER been so invested in a football match in my life! My favorite bit is watching Dougal protect the flags though. There are so many great episodes of Father Ted, but the football match is my absolute favorite!!

Hi Noah, the lessons being : 1/ never leave any alcohol-based drinks where Father Jack can find them. 2/ Be careful what you ask Father Dougal to do, as occasionally he just might get it right !! Still amazing that Ian Fitzgibbon, who portrayed Father Jessup in this, is now an acclaimed Irish director. He has directed a few low budget features and plenty of TV, but for the Father Ted connection he directed episodes of Moone Boy with Ted regular directer Declan Lowney.

You need to watch "The Passion of Saint Tibulus.It has a brief scene telling how the priest came to be on the island (sort of) and it bishop Brennan, whom you know from this episode. Plus it's an all-round funny episode.

I have watched this multiple times sincr it first aired in the 90s. Only now do I see Jessop has a beard growth in the post credit scene. Indicating he has been there a few days at least.

I love this episode. Bishop Brennan is a great character and appears in 2 other episodes of Father Ted. The best one in my opinion is "The Plague" from Series 2. You might want to consider doing a reaction to that. You may also recognise the actor of Bishop Brennan. He was in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". He plays the visitor who comes to see Harry's uncle at the start of the film.

Two things, "Escape From Victory" is a reference to Escape to Victory, the war film where a gang of Allied POWs who played football before the war, play a German team at football, in Paris. It was known just as "Victory" in the US, I think. Starred Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Max Von Sydow. Secondly, I'd like to congratulate you on making a very game effort at pronouncing the word "arse". :-D

As someone else has noted, before watching The Mainland episode, I'd say it's necessary to watch some One Foot In The Grave to really appreciate one of the jokes in it. Trying to narrow down best episodes is difficult, but I'd recommend Hearts Of Darkness, Who Will Buy?, The Trial, The Beast In The Cage and The Valley Of Fear

There aren't any other connected plots, but Series 1, Episode 3, The Passion of St. Tibulus, introduces who Bishop Brennan is, and he helpfully tells us how Ted, Dougal and Jack ended up stuck on Craggy Island in the first place. Love how even Jack is scared of drunk Ted. Yikes.

Yes father ted nemeses is named Father Dick Byrne there always at each other interesting fact the guy who played Dick Byrne tried out for father Ted Crilly but didn’t feel the role was right for him so he played Dick Byrne which he did a great job loved watching father ted when I was in my teenage years visiting my grandmothers house you’ll love watching these two episodes:)

Oh yes the narcissistic Bishop Brennan, played to perfection by Jim Norton. The writers spotted him in Frasier and decided that he was perfect for the part of Len. I believe the football episode was a nod to catholics being told not to attend the Ireland v Yugoslavia match in the 1950s on spiritual grounds. Bloody fun programme, either way.

I love how father Jack does a rabbit impression to Bishop Brennan when he was apologising sarcastically. It's in reference to the episode when it was revealed that he has a phobia of them, because they got into a lift with him, and started to nibble at his cape and everything!
