there are two drivers per team. both drivers race. if one DNF (did not finish) due to a crash, power unit issue or anything during the race, race is over for the driver. if two drivers DNF, race is over for the team. The car is a huge factor for the race but that doesn't downgrade the skill of the drivers. these cars are extremely difficult to drive. You should watch "Can A Normal Person Drive an F1 Car?" for context but yeah, it's both the car and the driver. Also, the race is just...exhilirating.

So this is what makes F1 great, it's not just about the driver. It's about the car, it's about the engine, it's about the entire package put together. The technological solutions the teams come up with to 1 up each other for that extra tenth of a second, the different design philosophies mean a car can be strong at some circuits but weak at others, you can have all these different factors yet rival teams can be separated by hundredsth of a second, it's truly a marvel. Just a pity the politics is moving toward more electric which in reality has a similar carbon footprint to petrol engines, if not worse. Miss the sound of a high revving V10/v12 motor.

Thats the point in my opinion, its called a Formula series for a reason, innovation and finding loopholes in the regulations is the name of the game, and obviously. Thats why she mentioned that this sport is for the "nerds". I myself watch F1 cuz I love to see the most advanced technology on the road.

If I remember correctly, Formula 1 is the second most popular sport in the world, only behind soccer. That explains the multi-million dollar tracks and flood of celebrities. On a side note: the Yas Marina Circuit built for Formula 1 in the late 2000's had a construction cost of 1.3 BILLION USD.

about you questioning if the driver matters or not: it does. a good driver with a bad car will have a good chance of outperforming the car. meaning that might be able to get a better position than expected, thanks to his skills. Of course a good driver with a good car have a great chance of winning, while a bad driver with a good car will probably underperform and not reach the expected positions. and then any bad driver with a bad car will pribably not last long in F1 (unless something/someone keeps him there). You can even go further and put the team in the mix. the strategists for each team will also have impact. You can have a good driver with a good car (high chances of winning) but if the race strategy fails, the good driver with the good car will fail too (looking at you Ferrari). Just because the car also matters it doesnt mean everything else doesnt. In the end it is just adding more pieces to the mix. More variables, which if they work well they can achieve great things, but if one starts to fail, the whole project might go down.

The crucial difference between F1 and other racing is that F1 teams are constructors. They don’t go to a manufacturer to get a car built, they build the car. The cars are built from carbon fibre by the teams in their own factory, baked in their own autoclaves, to their own design. Nowadays the teams typically design a new car around new ideas every year, then constantly develop that car throughout the year, at some point splitting their resources between development of the current car and next year’s car. Like NASA is a good comparison, but think of it more like 10 NASA teams all competing. It’s a development race. The speed or rate of research and development is a huge deciding factor. It’s not enough to make your car faster because all the teams are trying to do that. You have to bring improvements to your car faster than your competitors. There’s a good book called Race Without End, detailing the never-ending development race. F1 demands 100% commitment from staff, most of whom are dedicated to racing, willing to sacrifice family time and marriages for more speed. So you’re right amount the money, to an extent. More resources equal more research staff and testing which can help you out-compete the rest. Today there are strict limits to control costs. Limits on track time and limits on aerodynamic testing for example. But in the past it was crazy. Top teams all own their own wind tunnels for instance. And we’re talking the biggest most sophisticated rolling road wind tunnels in the world. And these would run 24 hrs a day in three shifts, almost 365 days a year for the very top teams. Heck, at one point Ferrari had no less than 3 wind tunnels! Testing also used to be unlimited. Teams had separate test crews and drivers. Ferrari even has its own test track. While Michael Schumacher was winning races around the world, Luca Badoer was at the Ferrari track testing improved parts for the next race. For other teams, Spain was a popular test location for the good weather. But so much time was spent testing there that team staff had to be rotated out to avoid going over 182 days (half a year) or they’d be considered residents and subject to paying income tax in Spain! Again, in the cost cap era this is all heavily limited. I mention all this to try and describe the scale and intensity of F1. Motorsport is expensive but there is nothing that gets close to F1. But, money is not everything. Historically, corporations tend not to fare well. Big companies almost always partner with an F1 team to win. Or lately, they buy the F1 team but allow it a great deal of management independence. It took a while for them to learn there is no time for board meetings and office politics etc. The team needs to be nimble and decision making fast. There is typically a single team boss in control. For a quick example, the McLaren team was at the Monaco GP (south of France) where the cars can often touch the walls. On Thursday practice, they found out that the suspension was too weak for this and broke. They were able to design stronger parts, manufacture them in carbon fibre (involves hours of baking in an autoclave) at the team base in the UK, and fly them to France in their own private jet in time for qualifying on Saturday. Toyota is a good example. They have been successful everywhere else. Rallying. Le Mans. And now NASCAR. And they tried F1. They spent an estimated $2 billion in 7 years, or about $300 million a year. But they went about it the wrong way. Building their own base in Germany instead of buying an established team. They never even came close to winning a race. Now, manufacturers like Mercedes have learned to buy an existing team and allow it some independence. This means the Mercedes F1 team and cars are not built in Germany but in the UK where the team is based. Same with Renault, team is also in the UK. In fact, for decades the only successful team not in the UK has been Ferrari.
@akyhne
@akyhne 11 ай бұрын
Thats nit entirely true. Many of the teams hire a company, to build their car. For example, Haas uses Dallara to build and develop their car, the same manufacturer that build the Indycar chassis.
@hughgolo8660
@hughgolo8660 11 ай бұрын
@@akyhne Hmm no. It's definitely misleading to say "many of the teams..." Haas is actually an outlier here, maximising how much they outsourced from the beginning. It would be more accurate to say that Haas bought Ferrari parts (arguably the whole rear end assembly with gearbox and suspension according to some) and Dallara helped develop the rest to Haas specifications and manufacture the actual chassis. That is not equal to .... "Haas uses Dallara to build and develop their car". And many teams? Go ahead and name the others. In any case, the picture has changed in the cost-cap era. Haas has built up its own desgn department, based in Maranello, with mostly former Ferrari engineers. Dallara is still heavily involved and manufactures the chassis, but their role has reduced. At this point it would be a straight-up lie to say that "Dallara develops and builds the car" for Haas.

Ok, so... Idk if you will ever read this sir, but.. I'm going to try and put it simply.. (btw sorry for my English as I'm not a native English speaker.. anyway..). You shouldn't pay attention to that video that much. Yes, it answers some of the questions, but not all of them. Throughout the video, you were asking 'why' lots of times (although towards the end you sort of got it)... The lady in the video started to talk about a couple of things but never truly made her point, or rather, never truly tried to explain some of the stuff to the very end. So.. yes. F1 from the very beginning was and is about innovation (it's not called Formula without a reason - as teams have to follow the formulae/rules set by the FIA). To understand why is it so expensive and why do these teams spend so much money on it is partially explained in my previous sentence. You have to realize that in the past, it was far more easier for everyone to enter and manufacture and run your team and the cars, because the technology wasn't so good, therefore, theoretically speaking, you could enter the competition with your own car that you designed yourself and beat the, let's say, factory teams (or factory-backed teams) or teams with a lot of money - that is if you were smart enough how to design a car. However, it was also about the pilots/drivers as well, so you always wanted to have the best car and best pilot there is. However, because of the technology of that day (or lack of it), it is possible to say that the driver made maybe 50% of the difference (while today it might be more because of car) when it comes to success - the good drivers could win more easily, or at least show that they can do it even with a machinery that is not as good as the competition's. Anyway, as the time progressed, so did the cars and the technology itself and the business began to spiral out of the control towards the middle of the 2000s in terms of money spent on all of the stuff... With the financial crisis back in 2008, the F1 and FIA began to regulate the F1 more so that it would be more sustainable and so that the teams wouldn't mindlessly throw the money into the cars in the pursuit of absolute perfection + of course level the playing field so that the private teams/or teams with less money would have more chance (so that's why she said that for the 2022, a budget cap was introduced + this also meant that the other manufacturers are now more willing to start their own teams - because it's really difficult to start and maintain an F1 team precisely because of all the reasons that I and she has mentioned - you have to have the know-how + the money + the talent). And when it comes to drivers these days.. although the F1 cars today maybe like 80% of the success, the 20% that the driver represents are still very crucial and can still make a difference. Btw, that DRS that you are so excited about... it is exactly why or what is wrong with the today's F1 - the cars got so complicated and so aerodynamically advanced that it is very hard for the car behind to overtake, so that's why a solution to "make it easier" was introduced/invented (there are debates to this date in the community whether it is good or not.. because it means that you artificially interfering with the competition - but these are politics (which is another thing that is crazy about F1.. btw don't watch the Drive to Survive docu-series by netflix, as a lot of the stuff creates stories that are simply not true - I would advise you to rather read up on the stuff on wikipedia or in the books)). When it comes to the future of F1.. it won't be electric any time soon. They rather experiment with the bio-fuels and synthetic fuels - anything that might be sustainable renewable (batteries are still very big and heavy and inefficient in comparison to the crazy F1 engines). Sorry for the long post..
@BarelyA1ive
@BarelyA1ive Жыл бұрын

Steering wheels for F1 cars have more controls. Below the 'N' and 'P' buttons are two rotary dials called 'DIF IN' and 'DIF MID'. These change the differential settings for corner entry and mid-corner. They can be used multiple times.F1 steering wheels are expensive because they're designed for the optimal convenience of the driver during the most challenging of races (race tracks). Ask yourself how much profit NASA makes. Unlike the the mindset of "if it don't make a massive profit don't bother doing it", this is all about the challenge. @@CVTECK1 Speed (Focus is on Energymanagement insteat of real on track fights) and they drive mostly "street circuits" instat of real race tracks and these are boring in F1 too. I dont have a problem with electric racing cars if you use it for short/ more Sprint like racing series, but batteries are not yet sufficiently developed to make long races exciting without only paying attention to the battery charge. In Extreme E (Offroad electric SUV racing with multiple short 2-3 round races ) or WRX (World rallycross championship, full electric since this season) I only notice it on the (not existend) sound

All drivers in the same spec car is like going a zoo that only has one type of animal. Next you'll be claiming playoffs are a good thing and promotion/relegation isn't, USians are crazy! There's a reason why F1 and real football are wached by billions. Every single weekend there's more people watching the premier league than watch the superbowl and F1 is has more people watching it than nascar, indy and every single other form of racing combined.
