So Gåte's text is based on and distilled from an ancient ballad about a maiden who lost her mother when she was born, but later got a stepmother. The stepmother was so jealous of the girl that she transformed her first into a sword and placed it in the king's courtyard. However, the girl's inherent goodness also manifested in the sword, even though she had been changed into an object. All the finest knights and soldiers favoured this sword above all other swords, and the envious stepmother then transformed the maiden into a needle. The most skilled tailors loved this needle and sewed the most beautiful clothes with it. The stepmother grew even angrier and turned the girl into a wolf, cursing her to roam the forest forever, unable to rid herself of the wolf form unless she drank her brother's blood. And so it was. The maiden wandered through the woods. For eight years, the stepmother stayed indoors, afraid to venture out because she knew the wolf maiden was out there. But then she became pregnant and wanted to go to church. The wolf pounced on her, seized the stepmother's blue cloak, pulled her off her horse, tore out her heart, and drank her blood and thereby also her brother's blood. With that act, the curse and enchantment were lifted, and the maiden emerged, just as beautiful and kind as before, and returned home to her father.

Someone online informed me that the story is about the maiden in wolf skin is actually common in all Germanic cultures. That might signify that this tale is far older than 1000 years. It could be from the time the Germanic tribes branched out. Making its origin 1600 years or older.
@SebHaarfagre9 ай бұрын
@@ladythalia227 Germanic tribes shared some common cultural things and mythologies, some of it trickled to the Baltics, some of it into Gaul, before the Romans. Scandinavia was inhabited by at least some people, as far back as 15 000 years. I love Norse culture but proto-Nordic also mesmerize me. Pre-Old-Norse, the culture was even more shamanistic (like Suemonesko of Finnic/Baltic tribes) and it's just interesting how some cultures are so deeply ingrained - changing, but extremely deeply rooted. I'm very very glad this is our contribution this year. I feel a close connection to the very things I feel them represent.

I really hope they win. Gåte is pronounced Gaw-Teh. The song is inspired by a 1000 year old ballad and a traditional vocal song style for calling the cows, a traditional instrument called a nyckelharpa - (keyed fiddle), mix in some metal and a vocal beast and voilà! The singing at the beginning of the song is a “kulokk" and is traditionally how they called the cows in for milking. The lyrics tell a 1000 year old folklore story about an evil stepmother who curses her stepdaughter to become a wolf alone in the forest. The only way she can break the curse is to drink her brother’s blood. In the end, she sees her stepmother in the forest so she attacks and eats her. It turns out her stepmother was pregnant, leading her to drink her unborn brother’s blood and break the curse.

The name of the song "ulveham" means more than being dressed as a wolf. It is actually being in a wolfs body . The corresponding shift to a bear is björnsärk (or berserk as you call it in english), more well known maybe. Wearing a ulveham will also make you a werewolf, which are not knewn to be very nice. Actually the song is based on a more than 1000 year old saga in old norse. That saga was picked up by the Grimm brother's which started the saga of Snowwhite which is an offspring of this saga, but far less bloody and more symbolic ....May Noreg win this year (says a Swede)

11:01 the reason for the confusion is that Gunnhild's brother (fiddle player Sveinung Sundli ) quit the band just last summer (2023) - allthough he has later joined on at least one concert. His replaclement Stenersen - whom plays nøkkelharpe/keyharp also plays in an amazing band called Wardruna ('viking music') that you should check out. The route via Wardruna will probably somehow lead you to the holy grail - Aurora....

Sure, the live performance of Helvegen from festspillene has been done by many reactors. A better _setting_ , if not performance, is the outdoor performance from Trænafestivalen 2017. Also there's the alternative collaborator to Aurora on Helvegen: Mari Boine. The performance from Red Rocks 2019 is brilliant. Also Mari Boine is a legend in her own right. The performance of Eagle Brother from operahuset in 2009 is absolutely brilliant. And there's the more metal route with Wardruna: the performance of the song Kauna from the Incubate festival 2009, featuring Gaahl - a legend from the Norwegian Black Metal scene. Diving even deeper, one can seek out 70s inspiration for Gåte in the band Folque. There are a few live performances available on youtube.

Ulveham = wolfskin The intro is an old “kulokk” A “kulokk” is how the women called/calls the cows home to be milked in the summer. The song is inspired by a medieval folklore/ballade, a dark one🤘 The chorus is inspired by the intro (kulokk) English lyrics: [Sample: Vocalization; Marit Jensen Lillebuen] [Verse 1] I was such a beautiful maiden My stepmother evil, my mother she died She turned me into a sword and a needle And sent me to the king's estate And the anger my stepmother felt the most That all the stately liked me best [Chorus: Vocalization] [Verse 2] Then she gave me skin like a grey wolf She cursed me to walk the forest alone And never will I bе whole and good Before I drink my brothеrs' blood [Chorus: Vocalization] Originally this song is much longer, but they had to shorten it down for Eurovision.

As I stumbled upon this excellent song and got familiar with the legend, I started uncovering the "meaning behind meaning" for me. Professionally I'm into semantics, myth, symbol, metaphor and psychoalanysis. Personally, I'm going through a rough cruise right now in my motherhood - letting go of an adult child and henceforth letting go of part of me. This is what I read of the storyline. In every parent there are 2 conflicting sides: the loving and warm, benevolent, all supportive, protective, all forgiving (tge deceased mother); and the unemotional, detached, harsh, sometimes aggressive, selfish (the stepmother). The 1st part keeps the child in comfort but doesn't prepare them for the brutality of responsible adult life (separation-individuation). The 2nd part may seem cruel, it pushes the child out to the world and says "find your own way, figure it out, I don't care any longer ". The daughter manages well, finds her own purpose (sword and needle), finds recognition and respect in society (knights and craftrmen). But then the "dark mother" overcomes her - self-doubt, envy, loss of direction in life. Perhaps this "dark mother" energy comes from the actual parent, perhaps from the internalised mother figure within the girl. As a result, she puts on wolf's clothing and becomes a recluse, ventures into the wildreness (another big symbol). In the wildreness she gets connected to primeval powers that put things in order. She kills the "bad mother" element and at the same time the child figure which it entails (a brother in uterus, dependent and unable to stand on his own). She is now fully adult. The song features a Norwegian herding call, which only adds another layer of symbolism. Rarely does a song have such an impact on me! It is indeed a masterpiece. Touches my soul in so many places. My winner of Eurovision 2024 ❤

the song is taken from an ancient (1000 year old)norwegian medieval ballad, called "Møya i ulveham"(The girl in wolfskin). The Norwegian story exists in various versions, mainly from Telemark.[Basically, the story revolves around a young maiden being transformed into a needle, a knife and a sword by her evil stepmother. However, the people of the world appreciate both the needle, the knife and the sword. To punish the maiden even more, the stepmother transforms her into a wolf. The story ends with the stepmother staying with the child, and on the way to church the wolf pounces on her and drinks the stepmother's heart's blood. This lifts the curse, and the maiden emerges from the wolf's den.

Great song, great band, great singer, absolutely fabulous...But somehow it brings back memories on a band from the Netherlands long time ago? Hi, there! Greetings all the way from Brazil! You just got yourself a new subscriber!! Great analysis. I'm also a Metal Head and for some reason loved Alessandra from last year as well. But this?!? This is a dream come true. Ulveham is more than just a song: it's a full experience! I loved your reaction because it brings me back to when I first saw this presentation. Like, there's nothing that comes even close to this quality in Eurovision and I have been having a hard time finding out something that has in the whole history of the contest. What do I think we should do? Well, we metal supporters should present this to EVERYONE that has at least some connection with the genre. Because then we can vote and make this WIN! Can you imagine a metal song winning Eurovision? I get goosebumps from imagining it. What do you think of this "metal taskforce"? Cheers!! Keep on rocking, and thanks for the content!!
@DaneBramageROCKS10 ай бұрын
Hi there and welcome the channel. Thank so much for the comment and compliment. I can only dream of a Metal song winning Eurovision and I will support this reality any way possible. I think also I want to be part of this taskforce! Got my vote for sure! 🤘Keep on Rockin'🤘

Just a question: are you able to vote in Eurovision from Brasil?
@DaneBramageROCKS10 ай бұрын
@@ghauan I believe so. They have online voting poles during the live show.
@ghauan10 ай бұрын
@DaneBramageROCKS yes, but the votes are from the other countries in the competition, so how would a vote from Brasil fit in?
@DaneBramageROCKS10 ай бұрын
@@ghauan Last year, I did it through the phone app. I think you can vote online as well. You basically create an account, and there is a certain time during the show where they open up voting to the public and I think you get up to 10 votes and you can spread them out however you like. Keep an eye out as we get closer and they should explain it or add the voting button to the application or web site.

Thank you for your reaction video! I've been a fan of Gåte since their very beginning. Seeing them in ESC is a huge thing, since I'm both a metal- and a ESC-fan. This is not a typical ESC-song. I think this song will do either really good, like top 3, or really bad. Unfortunately, they don't do well with the ESC-fan, mostly because the song Ulveham isn't really the ESC-fans genre. But I do think they'll surprise everyone! Gåte is the dark horse of the race, the underdog.

Like Go-A for Ukraine a couple of years back I believe, this had to be reworked a little (the lyrics were too close to the source material). Like Go-A (who you should look up) it probably gave it a little something more. I knew you'd love it. Belgium has just entered the chat and could be a definite contender worth a check. But I love Ireland this year, they are one of the one of the most successful nations at Eurovision but have been beige in recent years and Bambi Thug isn't beige! They call what they do ouija pop.
