Awesome reaction🤘 The instrument you see in the beginning is a traditional nordic instrument called nøkkelharpe/key harp I love this song and performance😍 Gåte (gaw-teh) has been a band for years and are known for being one of the best live bands in Norway🤘 Their genre is Norwegian folk music mixed with rock/metal Ulveham means wolfskin The intro is an old “kulokk”, a “kulokk” is when the women called/calls the cows home to be milked in the summer, often in the mountains. The chorus of the song is inspired by this “kulokk” The song itself is inspired by a medieval folklore/ballade I recommend checking out the longer version, love it😍 Too bad they had to shorten it down to three minutes for Eurovision🤷♀️ English lyrics: [Sample: Vocalization; Marit Jensen Lillebuen] [Verse 1] I was such a beautiful maiden My stepmother evil, my mother she died She turned me into a sword and a needle And sent me to the king's estate And the anger my stepmother felt the most That all the stately liked me best [Chorus: Vocalization] [Verse 2] Then she gave me skin like a grey wolf She cursed me to walk the forest alone And never will I bе whole and good Before I drink my brothеrs' blood [Chorus: Vocalization] [Outro: Vocalization, Storm] I then tore out her heart So her blood flowed free Then I got to drink my brothers' blood Greetings from Norway 🇳🇴

The intro vocals are supposed to be the "original" to this tune, I guess, an early medieval ballad. I don't know if this is an actual sample of a recording of this "original", or they recorded it themselves (leaning towards the latter), it is somewhat distorted. Now, to the song technique, it is traditional Scandinavian singing, with roots from at least the 13th century. Dunno the "correct" term for it, but it is kind of like going into and out of falsetto, not too unlike yodeling. The folk music this is based off of had klind of a resurgence in Norway in the national romantic era of the mid 19th century, and has survived as a niche 'til today. Gåte (pron.: ca "gaw-teh" - literaly "riddle") took these folk elements and added a rock sound (and sometimes, like here, an electro/breakbeat sound) to it, and they've been around (on and off) for some 25 years by now. The singer, Gunhild, was still a teenager when they released their full length debut.

They have several albums of great music, so now you have a whole universe of folklore and story telling Folkrock to enjoy. She was only 13 when she started what became this band with her brother, and 16-17 when they broke through with their album Jygri, so she has been doing this for a long time. They are amazing live. The lyrics are always based on old mystical tales or on folk music songs. If you watch the song Bendik & Årolilja, you will see how incredible young she was, and how talented at that early stage. The song is a sad lovestory about Bendik who falls in love with the kings daughter, and gets executed because he visited her secretly. She dies from sorrow. Enjoy, this over 20 years old hit. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6fLeWeHbcp9gK8

Marcus and Martinus are Norwegian, but spend a lot of time in Sweden (maybe even more time there than in Norway) so I guess they have strong feelings for the country. They are also from northern Norway, so they have probably spent many summers in Sweden growing up. However, the song is half Swedish, with the help of Swedish songwriters and producers. It's nice that we can share the artists in the two countries. We Norwegians have undoubtedly listened a lot to Swedish artists and other Swedish entertainment. But we do not claim them unless they are actually half Norwegian, like Elisabeth Andreassen.
