If you back far enough what became association football (football/soccer) stemmed from a series of games that existed around with various rules including some that allowed handling of this kind. In the 1600s and 1700s there were lots of local variants and in the mid 1800s people started to codify more - rugby came from one variant set (why its called rugby football), soccer another, American football via early rugby has the same root. Gaelic football is just another and Id argue it is an older ruleset variant than soccer despite the Governing body being younger than the Association Football one, especially since the FA when it set up settled for a purely kicking game…

Gaelic is a word meaning Celtic, it has older origins than Celtic. Celts once occupied most of Europe and as far as the Middle East, but it wasn't an Empire. The Celts never united to take over other countries. They lived very much like Native Americans, they never had large cities, they were tribal, their religion was the worship of Nature, they painted their bodies to go into battle and lost their lands to the Romans, the same way the Native Americans lost their's to the invading Europeans. It seems the only difference between them was that women could become Chief of the Tribe and women often fought alongside their husbands in battle. The Roman soldiers were actually warned about this and told that if they killed a man, they would immediately be set on by his wife, who could fight as well as him and was now also very furious. The Romans called the Celts of France, the Gauls, their version of Gaels. Their culture is still found in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall in England, France and Spain, along the extreme west coast of Europe. By the way, Hurling has been played for thousands of years and appears in very ancient Irish stories, the game was used to get young people in shape for combat training, which was as intensive as some of the Martial Arts.
