Nice Fact: In 2015, 22 years after the song was in the charts, it was back at #1 in the German charts. The makers of "Aktion Arschloch" called for people to buy the song from an online store of their choice, rate it with top marks and also request it on their radio station, in clubs and at parties, for example. In doing so, they want to "contribute in a simple way to setting a sign against the xenophobia that is rampant in Germany." EDIT: "On September 4, 2015, the band "Die Ärzte", which was originally uninvolved in the action and is entitled to the song's royalties, declared that all proceeds from the downloads or CD purchases, as well as the additional GEMA income, would be donated to the human rights organization Pro Asyl."

Between 1990 and the release of this song in 1993 about 35 people in Germany were killed by right wing extremists, events like the riot in Rostock-Lichtenhagen and the murderous arson attacks in Mölln and Solingen terrified many people. This song is a reaction to that.

in addition the video is full of symbolics like in the most of their videos. Farin and Bela standing up from the dead is clearly their comeback to music. And Rod sits between them and singing with them as the new member of the band. And soooo much more. It is to say, that the Band never made a political song for an official album before. That shows how big the impact of the events of the extremists was.

One of the greatest German bands, however, internationally underrated due to a strong focus on lyrics. While their musical abilities are solid, the real feeling unly unfolds when the subtle clues in wording are understood. But strong recommendation for every German learner. :-) I like, that you explain all the lyrics at the end!

@@SethinBerlin Die Ärzte = Beste Band der Welt Dier Ärzte are a good choice. If you want a sort of weird song from one of them: Farin Urlaub - Dusche NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle, 80's music) is problably a good choice to look into German music. Also Westernhagen and Grönemeyer and maybe some East German bands. Singers and bands like: Peter Schilling, Hubert Kah, Extrabreit, Nena, Joachim Witt , DÖF, DAF, and so on. My personal suggestions in no specific order: Die Ärzte - Schlaflied Farin Urlaub - Dusche (man is in war with his household items) Marius Müller-Westernhagen - Freiheit (One of the best songs ever I think and it got unintentionally the hymn of German reunification) Marius Müller-Westernhagen - Lass uns Leben (there is a nice MTV Unplugged version with his daughter) Marius Müller-Westernhagen - Johnny Walker Peter Schilling - Die Wüste lebt (Great song but not so often played anymore, oh and he did a new version of the song, the 80's is better I think) Peter Schilling - Major Tom Hubert Kah - Sternenhimmel BAP - Verdammt Lang her Extrabreit - Hart wie Marmelade Extrabreit - Für mich soll's rote Rosen regnen (Hildegart Knef cover) DÖF - Codo Keimzeit - Kling Klang Keimzeit - Singapur Karat - Als ich fortging City - Am Fenster Joachim Witt - Der goldene Reiter Joachim Witt feat. Peter Heppner (from Wolfsheim) - Die Flut Stefan Remmler - Keine Sterne in Athen Nena - Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann (There is a newer version in Duett with Kim Wild with slighly different lyrics) Herbert Grönemeyer - Die Härte Klaus Lage Band - Faust auf Faust (it was the title song for a movie with the most favourite "Tatort" investigator.) Wolfsheim - The Sparrows and the Nightingales Wolfsheim - Ruby (cover of the Kenny Rogers song) Rammstein - Klavier (one of their best song I think, at least it has more melody than most of their other songs)

Yes, exactly! This song (and its huge popularity) was a strong rejection of the usual apologists that made the rounds of newspaper think-pieces and TV talk shows at the time, always telling us how all those skinheads and neo-nazis were just poor, misunderstood youths, who felt un-heard and left out of modern society, and if we just showed them compassion and made concessions to their world-view, then they would _definitely_ become peaceful model citizens again. This song said to them, "No! Fuck you! If your reaction to feeling sad is hatred and murderous violence, then you are an _asshole!"_

I think the song works on a number of levels. First, the analysis, that rightwing violence is a show to hide feelings, which isn't too original by the Ärzte, as this has been done before by countless psychologists and politologists. Second, the pity, that those offenders get by those who seek to "understand them", is used by the Ärzte to humiliate the Nazis, by pointing out the constant victimhood mentality and whining about an unjust world amongst the right wing guys, which doesn't square well with their pretend self-image as "strong men" And third, it tells off the "Faschistenversteher" gang of psychologists. Yeah, there might be reasons, why these people turned to be Nazis, but showing them empathy is not the way to treat them. Don't dig after the "true core" of their problems, you are just giving them attention they don't deserve. Just tell them right to their face, that they are crap, and better should shut up.

I always loved the end of the video where the two little girls who represent two groups of people who are the victims of fascists are just friendly to that one guy and wash his make up of. This reminds me of a story my best friend told me. She knew a former fascist who broke up with his violent past and greets every poc with a friendly smile. Another anecdote would be a letter the band got from a former fascist who literally changed his point of view by listening thier song and said: "Wait, they are singing literally about me and they are right."

fits exactly to me. the more older I get, the more I understand, how important this was. My first album, which I had listen "vorwärts und rückwärts" was Geräusch, but this song still has the special electrical push every time. It don't listen to it anymore for myself that much, but on eery concert it is still the burner and luckly and sadly at the sametime a lot of people are playing it or make a reference to it this days.

One of the hymns of my early youth. Still have the full album on MC from back in the day. Die Ärzte is one of those bands almost every german from the 70s onwards knows and probably can quote multiple lyrics of. Probably only eclipsed by the cult of the band Böhse Onkelz.

Die Ärzte were not formed in 1993, they were RE-formed then, though, hence the emergence of Bela and Farin from their caskets and the funeral as a setting for the video. Rod Gonzalez, the man in the middle, joined the band then. However, there is a long list of songs from the 80s. You should check it out. In the beginning, the bad was considered to be just a bunch of punk kids, cheeky troublemakers, with no real depth. And a lot of their songs are like that, but there are a lot of elements there that attack societal norms. After the band's reformation in 1993, their first release, Die Bestie in Menschengestalt, contained a lot of songs that, in good old punk tradition, rebelled and pointed out things that were wrong in society. To make up for it, the following album Planet Punk, was slightly less provocative, though the single "Ein Song namens Schunder" or "Schunder-Song" addressed the subject of bullying and striking out against your tormentor for the first time. If you are learning German, I suggest that song.

Thanks for the video! "Die Ärzte" had just reunited in 1993 (Farin and Bela greet each other from the coffin). The time around the reunification of Germany 1989/1990 is shown until today as a big party, but there were also dark sides. The time is also described as "Baseballschlägerjahre" (baseball bat years). Neo-Nazis from West Germany allied themselves with neo-Nazis from East Germany. There were many attacks, deaths and a racist climate towards asylum seekers, migrants, punks, homeless people and many others. The song was on the one hand a reaction to this time and on the other hand an activist interaction into the changing circumstances of the new Germany. Grandiose live band!

Great reaction! I love this song, and it's kinda sad that the lyrics are still relevant today. Adding to the anti-Nazi-theme this song has, I always saw it as written against this toxic masculinity mindset that most of the right-wing, patriarchal people are living and thinking of as the one and only way to live, because of this "afraid to cuddle" and "afraid to admit you like soft music" lines in the song. If I am not too late to recommend a song: "Keine Hymnen Heute" by the Broilers, who are another german punk band from Düsseldorf. It's such a great song and I love the video.

Some notes: This was the first single from the album "Die Bestie in Menschengestalt". And that album was their return after they had broken up 5 years prior. They came back at a time when Neo-Nazis were marching again and people applauding them and in our schools, kids were sympathizing with ideas of hate. They came back, highly anticipated and they came back hard. They gave us an answer, us who were not ok with the political development, the idea that you have to talk in a civilized way was unquestioned and there came Die Ärzte and just called them Asholes. This became big, this sold really well, it was impossible for the radio stations not to play it, MTV was big at that time and played it. "Arschloch, Arschloch, Arschloch" it was rude, it was loud and it became a statement. And by far not only for Ärzte Fans but for everyone who was fed up with that nazi shit at that time.

Interesting stuff, nobody ever listens to our music much! Thanks. May I introduce you to the music that had an impact on me here in Germany? Ärzte ist good - I was a fan of the early stuff but thing "Hurra" is one you should hear. Then there is the wonderful Rio Reiser - Song: "König von Deutschland" (you might have heard the Kaufland Ad...), "Junimond" or "Alles Lüge!. I loved Extrtabreit, too. Sing along to every song, but i LOVED the time they did a Hilde Knef song, together with that iconic movie star " Für mich solls Rote Rosen regnen" And thenn - 80ties!! Die Neue deutsche Welle - the New Wave movement. When music was fun. Joachim Witt "Goldener Reiter, or Ideal and "Blaue Augen" or Grauzone "Eisbär" . Not to forget our local Bands, here in Düsseldorf - Die Toten Hosen (Try "Tage wie diese") and Kraftwerk (the pioneers of electric music...)- Das Model, Autobahn Roboter. Good luck!

@@lukasschopf8715 well springerstiefel were worn by the nazis during the second world war. they still get used by the bundeswehr as far as i know. but many many people associate springerstiefel (especially with white laces!) with neo nazis nowadays. which is wrong, because only springerstiefel, with normal laces, are just shoes that are very robust and yes it is true that they are especially worn by some groups {goths, punks (^) metalheads etc.} but just because you wear them doesn’t mean you identify as a member of one of those groups. and with that said, i really don’t think that they worn the springerstiefel as a sign or something for the nazis

So for all non-german speakers here is a translation of the song (a revised version of the google translator): "Cry for love" by Die Ärzte (The doctors) You are really stupid That’s why you’re fine Hate is your attitude Your blood is boiling all the time Everything has to be explained to you Because you really don't know anything Most likely not even What attitude means Your violence is just a silent cry for love Your combat boots long for tenderness You never learned to articulate yourself And your parents never had time for you Oh oh oh, asshole Why are you afraid of caressing What's the point of all the turmoil Under the laurel wreath with acorns I know your heart beats And romance is for you Not just a vague (gray) theory Between "Störkraft" (Right wing rock band) and the "Onkelz" There's a cozy rock LP (“KuschelRock” is a music compilation that is meant for cuddling/ getting it on with your so…) Your violence is just a silent cry for love Your combat boots long for tenderness You never learned to articulate yourself And your parents never had time for you Oh oh oh, asshole Because you have problems that nobody cares for Because you're scared of cuddling, you're a fascist You don't have to project your self-hatred onto others So that nobody notices what a nice guy you are Oh oh oh Your violence is just a silent cry for love Your combat boots long for tenderness You never learned to articulate yourself And your girlfriend never has time for you Oh oh oh asshole, asshole, asshole

Nice review! Nothing much to add, maybe one little anecdote : When I was 12, I was staying in a summer camp run by the protestant church, and there was a summer fest where the kids were supposed to do a little performance for the parents. One group of little girls did act as a band and the song they performed to was starting with "...di bist wirklich saudumm, darim geht's dir gut, Hass ist deine Attitüde.." You could already see the smile freeze on the face of the Christian camp officials, and on some of the parents too. It was 94, the album Bestie in Menschengestalt was out one year, and I think it was also the year Green Day and The Offspring became really popular in Germany. We as soon to be Punk Rockers of course knew what was to come later in the song, and of course the more relaxed parents in the audience too... The song ended quite abruptly when these little girls started to shout who oh oh - ARSCHLOCH😁
