I am a Dutch-speaking Belgian and I do rather like the brutal honesty of the Dutch as opposed to the fake friendliness you often experience with Americans. If you're not used to this, it can come over as confrontational. But they just like to voice their opinions and have it all in the open, which is often what gets you ahead as a society. It's true that life in Amsterdam is not cheap, but many services like schools, health care, elderly care are some of the best in the world and a lot less expensive compared to the US. The Dutch, as most other European nations, are willing to pay very high taxes to make it so that being sick, old, poor or unlucky doesn't mean that you have less chances in life. I hope that puts the individualism and ungenerosity of the Dutch in a different perspective.

English has been a required subject for the high school exit exam and is a practical form of communication in international business. I spent a year in the Netherlands as a teen. My Dutch high school classmates had been taking classes for at least four years and had a lifetime of exposure to English. I don't know about your high school experience, but mine in America only offered up to two years of French or Spanish and had little exposure to those outside of class. Find ways to practice a bit of Dutch here and there with greetings and topics you which enjoy. Watch KZbin programs with Dutch subtitles (which might have some errors) or children's programs in Dutch. I poured through the children's section in the library to build my vocabulary and learn idioms.

@DS false. In the US when someone asks you how you're doing, they don't actually want to know. I can guarantee in the Netherlands they want you to be honest about that. Not a Dutch person, but a European. Well, most of the things she was saying was complete nonsense and the others like you said were completely on her. Not knowing the weather in the place you're going to? I'm sorry that's on you. Europe can get cold. To be fair though it's not uncommon for Europeans to go abroad for some time to work there and then return. There's a lot of that going on actually, but the usual way it's done is that you find the job BEFORE you go to the country, not WHILE you're there - except for some conditions of course, like if you're from Ukraine. And was it her first time seeing a street in a city? I mean really - trams, cyclists and buses are not rare, they are quite common here.

I agree with this, the netherlands has a sea climate so she actually got lucky she got snow because we only get a short period of time (if at all) where we have snow. It's mostly rain, cloudy or clear skies and it's one of the first things you will find about the netherlands. As for the drugs, it's mostly tourists that use it and, yes, Amsterdam is the main city for that, so you will smell it. Amsterdam is expensive but its easy accessible by train, so stay at rotterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem or even just a small city or town like Zaandam or Hoorn that are smaller, cheaper but you're in Amsterdam within a 20 min train ride through the beautiful farm fields. We are expensive but you can do research on that, and there are an insane amount of restaurants in Amsterdam and anywhere, you just have to find it. It's not gonna be around the famous square because that's the shopping area. The only thing I could think that might be a fault on the dutch side, is the security thing on the airport and that's still debatable whenever or not it was just bad luck

Most people don’t think about that and see zwarte piet as something positive, not something to embarrass black people. So the intentions of the people celebrating sinterklaas nowadays are mostly not bad at all. We’re not allowed to make zwarte piet black anymore, so the question is also not that relevant atm.

@@racheldijkstra1553 Let's not forget that even in the origin of the story, saint nicolas freed black people and they helped him bring gifts to children. It's a story of slave liberation and helping the less fortunate. But yea even when I was young (like 25 years ago) the story was that zwarte piet was black because it was soot from chimneys, not people pretending to be black. I hate how foreigners went "black automatically means blackface, therefore bad!" without looking at cultural differences and the backstory, and the majority decided to listen to them...

@@Sanquinity i did not even know that that was the origin of the story, very interesting🤔 yeah the only resemblence is their appearence, but no one is actually embarrasing black people while being zwarte piet, which was the goal of doing blackface. It’s so funny how she is like: “Netherlands worst country”. And then talks only about Amsterdam, as she did not explore other city’s or villages. I agree, Amsterdam can be overwhelming. But it contains a lot of history and has beautiful places if you look around. Also, depending on the person you encounter (and where), there are a lot of kind people around who love to greet or talk. As an introvert, I would like to avoid spontaneous conversations (to clarify, I’m from the Netherlands). My tip: try villages, not only Amsterdam, to experience different cultures and environment. One of the nice places for example are the islands (Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog).

This must be a bad joke. I have been to Amsterdam plenty of times and even as a student i found cheap and clean hotels, places to eat and activities. As a norwegian i dont speak dutch (there are many simularities), but learn some phrases before going and have only good memories of interactions with the locals. We all speak english. One time i was there alone, i was sitting on a street cafe having a beer and started talking to a local at the table next to me. He invited me to walk around the city to show me some cool places. I wasn’t scared but thought maybe he was gay or something, but i don’t mind gay people and as long as he doesnt think this is a hook up, there is no problem. This wasn’t the case and he was a really nice dude and we had a laugh. He showed me some cool parts of the city including a bar that wasn’t in the tourist maps. In this bar we got to listen to an old professor talking about interesting facts over a beer (people just sat around him listening), he introduced me to a old woman that was supposed to have psycic powers. All thow i was sceptical off this, she was nice and we had a laugh. The young girl working in the bar was an ex prostitute from eastern europe that had gotten out off this business and was supported by the patrons off this bar. She was a lovely girl. We laughed and talked all that day and night and i went home to norway. This was one of the best travel experiences i have ever had. There are alot off lovely people in amsterdam and sertainly interresting people. Be open and look oudside the grid and you can have a blast in good old Amsterdam. I will search for this bar the next time i am in Amsterdam and in the Jordaan district.

Most of the dutch people don't like Amsterdam, or at least would not want to live there. We all go to Amsterdam from time to time to have a good time, but living there............. Amsterdam is nothing more then a tourist trap where they spend a huge amount of money just so they can say they have been to the Netherlands. Go and take the train to travel away from Amsterdam, that is where you will find the REAL Netherlands. And be prepared, it can be shocking to see that it is even better lol. I sometimes felt this was a deliberate campaign by the dutch government to combat too much tourism especially in Amsterdam. However I can’t believe anybody with common sense can take her story seriously. There are cheaper hotels, bed and breakfast and especially hostels in Amsterdam. But as she said herself the Netherlands is very small and within 20 minutes of Amsterdam by train she could have staid in Haarlem with much cheaper accommodation and a lot less toerist and canals. It sounds like she just stayed in an expensive hotel in the most toerist place in the country without doing any research or exploring.

As an expat living in Amsterdam, I disagree with pretty much everything that she said. She does have some points, but that's because she didn't research, plan, or have any common sense. The Dutch language is hard, but English is pretty commonly spoken in Amsterdam, to the point where I've been trying to learn Dutch, and if people hear I don't have a Dutch accent, they immediately switch to English (super frustrating when I'm trying to practice and learn haha!) To be honest, most people that speak English, do so with a much higher proficiency than what Karen displayed in her video! Yes, Amsterdam is expensive. It's the capital, and a hot tourist destination. That seems like pretty common sense to me. Not to mention, who on earth decides to move across the ocean without even looking at a map and seeing the canals? or a picture?
@Jeroen19832 жыл бұрын
Chances are your accent has nothing to do with it. Until very, very recently, we were taught not to inconvenience foreigners with our language and switch to the lingua franca (since the 1960s English). This means that not doing so feels for many like they're being incredibly impolite. So you can practice, you just have to insist a little bit.
@avg34872 жыл бұрын
As a Dutch person there are a couple of things that confused me (this is gonna be long but if you're interested...): 1. Where did she find these Dutch people who barely spoke English? Especially in a multicultural city like Amsterdam that largely relies on tourism I genuinely doubt only some people spoke English. It's way harder to find someone who speaks no English here in the Netherlands than someone who speaks it fluently. English is actually a core subject in schools with Dutch and math. 2. Yes Amsterdam is expensive, but it's expensive for everyone and not just tourists. It's literally our capital city. Just like it's expensive to stay in Paris or New York (even though that's not the capital of course), it's expensive to stay in Amsterdam. 3. If you go to the Netherlands in the winter it's going to be cold, what a shocker. It's actually not even that extreme, our lowest temperatures are usually only a couple of degrees Celsius below zero. Maybe that takes some getting used to if you've always lived in warmer countries, but I really don't understand why you wouldn't research the average temperatures in winter beforehand if that's important to you. 4. What's the problem with people riding their bikes? She mentioned it but she didn't really say what was wrong with it besides "there aren't any cars" which isn't even true. Yes, it's really common to go by bike; our roads have special bike lanes and there's bike racks everywhere, but people still go by car. Maybe not so much in Amsterdam because the streets already have trams and bikes on the roads and there are limited parking spots, but in other cities cars are still very normal. 5. She found it unorganized? I sometimes think our country is a little too organized, so I really don't understand where she's coming from there. 6. Those canals and rivers have been there centuries before you were even born, they're not going anywhere just because you personally don't like them lmao. 7. "The only places to go are McDonald's and Burger king" what do you mean girl, we have restaurants?? Like I said, Amsterdam is a multicultural city and therefore we have many different restaurants. If you only go to those two places that's your problem! It might be cheaper, I get that, but don't go to Amsterdam then, because things are going to be expensive there. 8. I've never done dr*gs in my life, so it's not like we're all addicts here. Soft dr*gs are just more regulated and therefore safer here.

Im dutch, and i do agree with our people being cold, but if you grow up with this you dont really notice it, my buddy from portugal says this a lot, “the dutch always need to plan ahead, you cant just to knock on someones door and have dinner with them, they would want to plan in their agenda’s for that” which you probably could in lets say portugal, still if you get to know us dutchies we’ll warm up to ya! (And ofcourse not all dutchies are cold like that)
@Zowiezo1012 жыл бұрын
I believe it's mainly because there is an insanely high pressure from work and people don't really have time/energy to be social too often. So we need to know when people are over, in case we want to rest or spend free time for fun things. At least, that's the case for me personally and I'm an introverted person with autism, so not the best example 😂
@Basilicum_Raspberry2 жыл бұрын
@@Brando_Beats I think it is easy to conclude people are cold if you are comparing one culture with the next. But vice versa you can also be labeled as overly friendly or disrespectful by the other culture for not considering if it is convenient or not to show up when you do without a warning. I grow up on a Dutch island in the Caribbean and now live in the Netherlands. I have met some many people and have decided to try to see it from both sides. Even when you grow up in a country your family may have habits that are not normal to the people around. I have friends that I do not need to call before visiting and some I know I need to reserve months ahead. I feel the warmth from all of them because when we are together we connect and share. Different cultures show their love differently.

@misterincognito60892 жыл бұрын
@@lillexus5589 well yes and no, we simply have the high taxes so our government can take care of the country infrastructure. Whilst in countrys like Italy Spain and Portugal the taxes are low and most money goes to pay interest on national debts. Even if we were 5 times the size we still would be able to maintain everything the same because we simply have the money.
@swamidude22142 жыл бұрын
@@misterincognito6089 5 times the size with the same population density then. Simply put you got a town of 5k people they pay to upkeep for what 3 square km of roads. If you stretch everything out you need a lot more longer roads, still maintained by the same 5k people. Because every town is only a few km apart its easier to keep all the roads in between in good condition. Yes part of it is planning, maintaining and a well organised structure. However the size and population densiteit does make the ‘return on investment’ better because you invest less for roads that are being used more, compared to a country that has less population density and is spread out more. Also people visit other towns less if travel times increase, are less likely to commute to work in other cities. Making it less valuable to invest in roads and overall less ‘return on investment’. Which here stands for how much usage you get out of the investment it takes.

Amsterdam is the most expensive place to live or go rent a hotel in the Netherlands. And it's dumb that she is generalizing the whole country when she has only seen Amsterdam. I was seconded by my UK employer to work in Amsterdam in December 1998. I was there for 3 years. It was a great time. This young lady moved there with son without any research, she found that it was cold & snowy. I worked in NY in 1884 and it was a lot colder there. She complained about the rivers and canals, that’s the reason many go there. Complaining about the lack of cars and propensity of bicycles shows how ignorant she is, again no research. Also, when I moved to the US I had to have a visa and a job to go to. In my 3 years in Amsterdam I only met one person who couldn’t speak English. The Dutch speak Eglish so well they even understood my jokes! Yes there are loads of subways and trams, they are cheap and cover the city, you really don’t need a car, I managed for 3 years without mine. Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands, however they are located in special areas. Stay away from the Red Light District and you won’t see a prostitute, or get accosted by street walkers. If a hotel is too expensive then don't stay in the capital it's always more expensive.
