Hi Ian, I'm an Aussie retired Truck Driver and I've had a lot of experience with Volvo trucks and I can tell you that everything you've heard about them is 💯% true, they are one of the safest and most comfortable vehicles you'd ever want to drive, especially on Australian road's ( if you can call them road's 😂 ) you get out of them at the end of the day and you don't feel like you've done 10 round's with Mike Tyson, in my 40 year's driving trucks I've driven Mack's, Kenworths and most brands but Volvo and Scania are at the top of my list for there comfort and safety, shit, they are more comfortable than most car's on the road today, great video Ian as are all your videos. We rode the same roads for nearly the same length of time and drove interstate Volvo's FH16 Globetrotter was the best truck I ever drove, pulling a B-double from Tully to Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney. American trucks didn't compare and should learn a lesson from Volvo

Most of them had to backtrack just to find their kidneys and spine 😂 somewhere along one of our well maintained road's ( 🤣😜 ) : not: as I'm sure you can attest to. G,day to my fellow Truckie, that's one thing I miss in retirement is the comradery and all the fallen who paid the ultimate price doing what we loved doing.

The independent heating system it's almost mandatory for trucks, because in Europe is forbidden to keep your engine running while stationary during the shift break, in a parking lot for example, to keep your cabin heated or cooled, because the independent heater also incorporates a cooling system as well

You Said it all. Volvo is cheaper also now these days. THE only thing why People DO buy THE Scania is that IF they really want that V8 since Volvo never got in to it. Scania as you know came out with that V8 in 1969. Back in My trucking days THE late -70sh and Early -80sh I drove that ulkomaa linja as they say IF you driver Finland/ Sweden. Anyway, a Long story Short. That company that I drove for had only Volvo trucks back Then and I wanted to drive a truck ok THE Scania that had THE V8 so I knew in My own home town Vasa a truckng company that had only Scania 141/142 sh since THE owner was a big shot 😂 so anyway, I changed THE company got less pay, more work but I could drive THE V8. Now, looking back and thinking back I was so stupid Chang over from where I was in My own way THE #1 driver to be around THE #10th driver but I could drive that Scania that had THE V8. THE company with those Scanias was David Lundberg ok, THE owner is dead and THE company has been gone a Long Times already. And THE company with Them all Volvos is Axel Williamson company and they are Still in business 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 Maybe, because of THE Volvos ❤😂

The Volvo I Shift gearbox is in effect a computer controlled manual gearbox, hence no Park position. It has now been around for over 20 years and in recent years a dual clutch version has been introduced for smoother and faster gear changes, helping to improve efficiency. There is a video of a racing driver turned automotive tv presenter Tiff Needell taking a de restricted Dual Clutch FH around a race track. The aim to try and get a lap in faster than a hypercar gets round 2 laps.

Independent heater is also a popular option for regular cars here in scandinavia. And for the last 10 - 15 years or so you can control them from your phone or car key.

Here in norway we have also used them in our boats since the idk 60ies i guess, ebersprachers and webasto's. It's obv plenty kold here at times and u dont want to freeze your balls off while fishing.

This lady used to pull the blades for the wind turbines 100ft+ long. She's also been over to USA to drive but could get work in Canada and had to re sit her test in a manual. She finally got a job in USA and a outomatic. Within the last 10-15yrs trucks in Europe basically drive themselves and you had to special order a auto. Now it's rare to get a manual unless factory ordered.

The biggest wind turbine right now installed don't have 30 m/100ft blades, rather they have 90 m/300 ft! The ones to appear in the next future have 100 m long blades. This is at least in the Nordic countries. Not only off shore.

'600 revs that is all you have before you have to change gear... then you reach filth gear then someone cuts you up, slows down and you have to start all over again... one, one and a half...'

Fifth gear is ok to start driving with an empty truck. i usually started at low 3'rd gear with the splitter off and then you still have 13 gears to go as most semi trucks have 16 gears..@@Outside85

Hey Wrocker! This is not an FH16 but the normal FH. The main difference is the engine choice. The FH comes with variations of Volvo's D13K 13L engine with up to 550hp (written 540 on the door), iShift as standard transmission and iShift Dual Clutch as an option. The FH16 is the contender to Scania's V8 engine choices, coming with variations of Volvo's D16K 16L engine with up to 750hp! Other differences include the Interieur styling (FH16 comes with a unique color combination) and exterior styling (a different front grill and exterior package 3 as standard, black headlight inserts as standard and some more..). The FH16 omes standard with iShift but the Dual Clutch option is not available due to the D16K's high torque. I'm driving a 2021 FH16 650 and I couldn't be happier. 2:10 The FH and FH16's seating position isn't actually that high for european long distance trucks. Trucks like the Actros or Scanias with the S-Cab even have an extra step to go up and don't even need an engine tunnel! 2:30 these aluminium step inserts are optional and they are very grippy. nice! 4:50 "drives like a luxury limosine" you know what? they actually do. i have a 8x2 rigid chassis on full air suspension and it glides like it's on clouds. amazing stuff! 7:00 heated or heated and ventilated seats are avalable to choose from 7:30 aaah, the iShift gearbox

That's exactly the cab im driving currently. They switched me over from a Next gen Scania V8, to a LNG Volvo. I was pissed at first, but i have to say that its growing on me. Much thanx to the interior!

not anymore, at least not in europe. Most trucks don't BEEP BEEP anymore as it has been proven that the vast majority of people don't even notice a beep beep anymore simply because there are so many things now that beep for various different reasons. Most new trucks in Europe have white noise generators on the back of them that create this horrible loud staticky sound since that is notice more, a lot of work sites in europe won't even let you on if you have a beeper and not a noise generator now.

With regard to ashtrays, no its the same all over europe too, since late 90s its not really a thing ( think anout it, you wont find ashtrays everwhere in a BMW in America and they don't redesign inyerior features just for America) On this case they haven't " designed" an ashtrey either, they designed cupholders then someone thought hey we will throw in a plastic cup with a lid which if they want could be an ashtray or if not hold small items in 😊 Great vid

When talking about Volvo, we have the gearbox assembly factory in my hometown. I have also worked at that factory for some years quite long ago! The factory is about two kilometres from my doorstep, so the commuting was nothing less than a 25 minutes walk... Very convenient.

Heavy vehicle automatic transmissions don't have a "Park" in the transmission due to the "fail safe" air brakes where if there's a brake failure in the service or parking brake the brakes come on unlike a car where you lose your brakes, that's why cars and small vans require a "Park" in their transmissions, to prevent roll away with a parking brake failure.

I think it's more for the fact that the clutch is power steered with air. Now, if there is an air leak and empties the system if on gear you can't start it and there for move it. The lack of P is that its not an automatic transmission, it is manual transmission operated by a robot. The city busses do/did have real automatic transmissions. I'm not so in to those 'cause I ride those very rarely.

@@markusylitalo8376 No heavy vehicle using air brakes has a "Park" regardless of they type of automatic transmission. A manual transmission truck shouldn't be parked in gear because you can get stuck if you run out of air overnight. An automatic manual or "robot manual" doesn't park in gear. Transmissions don't use "power steering" that's a different system for a different job.

As a former lorry delivery driver, the complexity available before options in the electronics are locked out (at time of sale/lease)for the driver is mindblowing. My favourite was the "code" that could tell you what part number was needed, so any issues easily fixed before delivery (but beware, as non-OEM parts would leave the lorry in limp mode!!) - and sometimes the remote engine mapping ( more power or better fuel efficiency settings set over mobile phone network. Some have programmable gear shifting eg press button at start up when empty & hit accelerator - takes you to cruising gear/speed as efficiently as possible, perhaps just 3 gears, or programme going through all gears for a regular pick-up on a hill! The amount of drivers not given vehicle specific training by the operator is frustrating, so new features rarely used!!

PS for a "dare", trying everything available, got 23mpg from FH16 unit when taking it to have some hydraulics fitted (200miles). I knew the buyer - he was happy with 2mpg (meant it was always fully loaded!!!

As for ashtrays, I don't think I've seen one in any car built after 2000 (I'm from Poland, for context). I was buying a new Skoda Fabia last year (it came 2 months ago and is amazing ^^) and an ashtray wasn't even an option. While checking the online configurator, I noticed that it was, however, available as an option for Skoda Superb.

The new new trucks u can put in your driver card and the seat and mirrors will remember you. Even the volume on the radio is the same as when u left. If there was another driver last day it doesn't matter everything will adjust to your settings

its always fun to see the posetivety in your videos man. i live in a nothern europe really mountain heavy winter country and the fh16 volvos are propably the most common trucks over here, especially the 750, the normal spec here are 10 wheelers usually 6x4, the avarage weight of them loaded is from 97.000lbs to 108000lbs there are a few american trucks over here as well, people have imported them for fun. all from older peterbuilt and kenworths to more modern US volvos. i love the look of the american trucks, nothing looks like they do, but to me.. in my humble opinion i cant escape the feeling though that the european market trucks feel like they are decades more modern. i guess i can kinda say that if you have been driving japanese and american cars all your life and then sit in and drive a nice european premium brand car ( mercedes volvo and so on) thats how the trucks feel in comparison, they feel high tech and really thought out. they take less effort to drive in comparison to the us spec trucks i've seen they dont really feel smaller inside, or to put it better the work area of the driver feels more spaceous, but the sleeper part of the american trucks is enourmus in comparison

I drive a Volvo car and my previous car was also a Volvo, they were the first cars I've had that didn't have an ashtray/s, they both have 12v sockets - but that's all they are. They don't double as a cigarette lighter. I know Volvo major's on safety but I didn't realise that extended to trying to prevent lung cancer and emphysema. By the way, I'm not and never have been a smoker.

Regarding the ashtray, it depends on which country any specific car is meant to be shipped. I've been working at a Volkswagen/Skoda dealership for 11 years in Sweden, and when a new model is about to drop, they often send a preproduction car that goes around to all the dealers. Almost every car that's meant for Germany or the Czech Republic has a "smokers- kit," which is an ashtray with a lid to close and seal the smell of smoke. New VW-cars built for Sweden don't come with an ashtray very often, unless it's a commercial vehicle/van or an executive sedan, e.g., Skoda Superb or VW Passat/Arteon.

Webasto is also used for preheating the engine, and/or faster heating in the winter. Modern diesels are too efficient, just the engine won't provide enough waste heat for heating up the cabin, Webasto really helps with that. If it gets cold enough, you can't even maintain operating temperature without the Webasto running. In fact even with it running you might have trouble in some cars and vans.

My instruction vehicle was a reasonably recent Volvo (like 5 or 6 years old now). That thing was a beast. Bells and whistles like a luxury car. And powerful like a car. Of course we drove it half empty (there was a weight of concrete in the back). Perfect automatic gearbox (robotic gearbox because a real automatic gearbox would be to big for the truck). It drove so nice powerful but smooth, big but luxurious.

To be honest, when the temperature goes below -15°C (around 5°F) i didn't shut the engine of anymore. I once nearly freezed to death in Norwegian winter because of frozen (you got like ice crystals in the diesel when to cold) fuel in auxhaullery heating system. So when the engine runs, the returnfuel keeps some heat in the fueltanks. That being said; in Scandinavian countries they ad an adjutive to the fuel to prevent that, but the country i came from doesn't because we don't have harsh winters. But many companies don't want to use the scandinavian fuel because of costs

I drive a Volvo FH, mine is equipped with iParkCool option. Thats an airconditioning that runs of the batterys. It uses the same system ac the normal ac. It also can heat then it uses diesel. So you have heat and cooling with the engine off.

Most Aussie trucks run something called an Icepack. It's a small a/c usually mounted behind the cab and piped to the sleeper. It has an independent motor so you can fire that up and turn the truck engine off while you sleep.

@@herrakaarme there is an option for 2 extra 225Ah batteries that is only for "living quarters" that you should pick if you intend to stay several days in the truck waiting for a load without driving. If you have that option everything in the cab will run on those and you will always have fresh starting batteries.

Volvo are a very well respected name in the automotive industry. Whether it be cars, trucks, buses or coaches. They also make engines for boats. But the name generally suggests high standards and safety. In terms of their buses/coaches Volvo are the most popular in the world, and their engines are known to be the most powerful.

The gearboxes in Volvo and Scania are indeed manual gearboxes. Simply explained, the cover of the gearbox has been replaced with solenoid valves that handle the shifting together with a computer. Volvo calls its gearbox I-Shift and Scania calls its gearbox Opticruse.

Regarding ashtrays - here in Europe, in cars they're basically extinct, you might be able to specify it when ordering, but as standard equipment they're totally gone. Few people want them these days, smoking is not as common anymore as it used to be, it's seen as a filthy habit to smoke in your car and besides, 2nd hand value drops like a rock if the cabin interior is all smoked up and stinky. For trucks though, I'm not surprised to see them. Eastern European truck drivers in particular tend to smoke like friggin chimneys, not sure about Polish drivers in particular, but if you get down to the balkan countries, smoking is extremely heavy in general down there, and we have a lot of trucks and drivers from these countries driving up to Scandinavia, so ashtrays are probably mandatory equipment in those scenarios. :D

My sister in law has a Volvo XC70 3.2 AWD Geartronic with 238 horse power I think (no, I know just looked it up on google hehe). Really expensive cars but so luxurious (maybe even more than Mercedes ? Don't know about that but at least as nice inside). My only comparison is a mercedes S-class that my father bought before he passed away (It was a dream of his)... but the price is largely over 100K euros (almost more than the truck) but yea you get luxury for that kind of money

In the UJ because we drive on the left a lot of companies retrofit a speaker to the indicator ,so apart from the camera coming on it yells .."Warning vehicle turning left ,them beeps and continues yelling till you cancel the indicator..most euro trucks have a sunroof..You should see if you can find a video of a american spec volvo

That horn button. Some countries require that a truck has to have a loud beep while reversing. This button turns that beep on and off.

The reason there is no "Park" is because it is an pneumatic automated manual transmission. There is no converter. So it is actually a manual with auto clutch and gearshift.

@@IWrockerThe Volvo I-Shift transmission is essentially a robotized manual transmission, and it's so efficient that it beats the "normal" manual transmission in every single aspect. Used to be a test driver for Volvo Trucks, have extensive experience from these. There was an effort to introduce the I-Shift in the USA but American truckers just refused to accept it, even though it's a lot more fuel efficient along with the excellent comfort etc.

It is possible that you have parking in the gearbox, but in most of Europe it is a law that the parking brake is a separate system, so therefore there is no P on automatic gearboxes in Europe anymore. The gearbox also weighs less then

There are arguments about the space you get in a Cabover and a traditional long nose style. It depends on the design of the cabover, but many European brands will have a 2nd bed above the driver's seat, not just behind them, that's why they are so tall. Otherwise they use that space for storage, or perhaps even other features. I do like how longnoses typically have rather spacious beds, though. With European cabovers having a modest space behind the driver, and a smaller but still sleepable space above the driver, you can customize your cab in so many ways to include things like Mini Fridges, Microwaves, and all the other extras you'd want while still having enough space to store things (Most of the beds, for example, will lift to reveal storage space underneath, even the over-head beds have that). Obviously none of these features are exclusive to Cab-overs. I'm just pointing out that cabovers can and often do have enough space to fit all your favorite nick nacks and such.

Not only is the wheel tilt/telescopic, there are at least 2 tilt points, one for the steering column between the middle and bottom somewhere, and then again right up underneath the wheel. The transmission is an automated manual with dual clutches, so one gear engages before you run out in the other, making driving very seamless and keeping the loss of torque and power to a minimum. Contrary to standard tradition, the gearbox is in charge, rather than the engine, which is basically "on demand" for the gearbox.

The Dual Clutch has still to make its debut on the LNG, as well as on the FH16s. Only available on the D13K engine.The newer Volvo FH540s that we have at our company had Dual Clutch. Too bad they wanted to "turn green" and buy FH460LNG trucks instead. Only really good purchases they've done in the last couple years have been the Scania R580s. Volvo are better when it comes to reversing and when driving in tight spaces due to better transmission, but Scania have better engines, especially the V8s, and tend to be better to drive on the highway. Scania also feel like they have better steering for straight line driving as well, since there's more resistance in it. Some Volvos have had problems with their electric steering where it thinks you're always driving at walking pace so it will make steering too light to be stable on the highway. Like the steering of the newer Volvos though, where you can adjust how you want the steering to be. Hate the headlights, though, since when there's oncoming traffic, they tend to aim straight into the right had ditch and you'll easily miss signs and thus speed cameras. First hand experience on the last one. 75km/h in a 60 because I couldn't see the signs because the lights didn't go high enough.

8:00 actually our Citroen C1 has an automatic trans but with like a ''sequential'' way of shifting. Also we have no P in the C1 its just goes in N and then is turned off like the Volvo truck

Independed heater or electric engine heater is a common option at motor vehicles in northern Europe. It would not surprise me if independent heater also is common in the northern USA and Canada aswell.

Ashtrays are also becoming less common here in Europe. Honestly I see this as a bad thing, there are still a fair number of drivers that do smoke and by removing the ashtray from cars you are simply promoting them rolling down the window and flicking their ashes and cigarette butts out of the window and increasing the risk of fires being caused by this. Not to mention that the ashtray is useful for storage as well. I don't smoke and my car, Citroen C2 VTR 1.6, doesn't have an ashtray but I wish it did as it would be a great place to toss small change to be used for parking. It also doesn't have a cigarette lighter, instead there is a 12v power socket where the cigarette lighter would have been.

In Britain, you cannot use a horn after sunset through to sunrise so you need to be able to turn the reverse warning off. Smoking is not allowed now in any commercial vehicle. If you need a smoke you have to get out of the vehicle. Most of the features she shows you have been available for some years in most trucks. Our trucks are the same as European trucks, because we were in the EU, with the exception that our steering wheel is on the right.

Who told you that, Gazer75? The cab is classed as a "work place". I know an owner driver who was taken to court for this. He argued that the truck was his and nobody else would ever be in the cab.

Smoke-free Regulations 2006 class the cab of any work vehicle as being a workplace. This includes vans, buses & taxis. You are required to display a "no smoking" sign by law. I was HGV Driver for 35 years and I think it's a stupid law when you're going to be the only person in that cab ever, as most insurance companies don't cover passengers anyway, but law it is.

Ashtrays & lighters might still come with a truck. The one I got 2 years ago didn't however. In some European countries it's illegal to smoke in the workplace, so this also includes truck cabins and even company-provided cars. I've heard stories of people being fined for it.

You said at the beginning that it was an FH16, well, it's not an FH16. It's an FH13. Why am I saying that ? FH being the model (F means basically that it's a cab-over, and H means high). And the numbers after that (13 or 16) is the engine size/type. On the side at 2:30, you can see it's a 460 HP Volvo, and, there's also no FH16 badge on front of the vehicle and just FH. 460 HP engines are D13 (basically the same engine they mount on Renault T range) engines, which are 13L inline 6 engines. These engines are ranged between whatever hp at the bottom to 540HP. And FH16 starts at 540 HP to 750 HP. Now, I don't think this Volvo has this type of engine, but there's some 13L engines that have Turbo Compound (don't ask me what the hell is this, I don't even know, but as far as I know, it means that you have more torque at low RPM and you have a consumption gain as well, if someone knows how this works, feel free to say)

A note about the drive time only being 9 hours: Drive time and work time are separate here. You can drive for 9 hours (and extend it to 10, but let's not get into that, it's a mess, just like the rest of EU's rules) and you can work for 15 hours max. 60 hours is max per week, so the most common schedule is 12 hours, days a week, or 15 hours, 4 days a week. The reason is that the drive time is an EU thing and the work time is a Swedish thing and the two rules overlap and it becomes a big mess. You can work for 6 hours and then take a 30 min break (or split it into two 15 min breaks) and you can drive for 4.5 hours and then take a 45 min break (or 15 + 30 min), then continue again. Drive time is work time, but work time is not drive time. It was way better before the EU rules, when they were the same thing and you just had to take 30 min breaks after 6 hours of doing either. This is part of the reason why trucking school is 3 years long, on gymnasium level. Because the rules are complicated to hell. Don't even get me started on reduced weekend breaks etc.

12:10 in Europe is separated heating system what need only 2,2 liters per hour fuel ( 0,58 US.gallon ) = no problem heat in winter over night cabin 30 hours ( 70 liter/ 18,5 gal fuel tank ) .

Ashtrays, virtually gone in cars in Australia - lighter replaced by 12 volt charger etc. Most rental cars are non-smoking - with a hefty fee, if the rental company has to get rid of the smell.

Im assuming the sunroof is more of a safety feature than a cool thing. I have seen a sticker in a tractor with a top hatch where it said you should always keep it open if you drove over a frozen lake in case you went through the ice for instance. In this case better safety if you somehow end up on the side.

Scania 2-series had some adjustable too. There were a hand operated screw in the middle in the joint of the pole and steering wheel for adjusting the height. Then there were a pushing nob under the steering wheel on the pole for tilting the pole. Not as adjustable as now but something. And it was an option on Scania until 4-series.

7:55 imagine the huge bolt you might neet to park a 40t (metric) rig just via the gear box LMAO The MAN TGM 26.420 I drove in my driving school had this camera as well. But at my practical exam I had to activate the camera manually and permanent b/c it is mandatory to check the clearence before activating the turn signal. Which is frankly not happening if the turn signal triggeres the camera ^^

@IWrocker The automatic transmission has no "P" because it would add an additional mechanical component which would need to be massive to keep 40+ tonnes from rolling down a steep incline. It would cost more to buy - it would cost more to maintain - without any benefit. European trucks have mandatory pneumatic hand brakes. No air - no movement. It is the big lever on the top right hand side. A more simple aproach to the right corner dead angle is an additional mandatory mirror.

In the past, that used to be the problem if you had engaged a gear when parking. If you then wanted to start in the morning and had no more compressed air, you had a problem, because without air you could neither get the gear out nor operate the clutch on the automatic, i.e. not start the engine to pump air. Today it automatically shifts out of gear when you turn off the engine.

My volvo v70 2006 has telescopic wheel adjustment, I believe it's a thing volvos "always" done pretty well. Even though they're no longer the same company, volvo cars and volvo trucks, they do ofcourse share a heritage and will for some time bear some similarities still.

6 years European driver. All trucks have night heaters, I have one heating my little workshop, it runs off diesel. May I suggest trying a Renault Magnum truck video, if you really want a wtf moment. Love this channel, your becoming one of my favourites fast. You'd have the same demeanor if you has 2 million subs. I drove a crappy Ford for most of my stint, absolute rubbish. Stated up my own business, leased a Scannya and on the 3rd month, my driver totalled the truck drunk and sold diesel on my card to the value of £32k. I stopped then, I was a bit skint.
