You’re an absolute legend for reacting to the sketch, reason being I’ve been trying for years for reactors to watch it without any joy, so thank you and I’m glad you enjoyed it, I do feel you were dropped into the deep-end, though , not knowing nothing about what you’re watching, so folks have explained that this show is a very British tradition around Christmas time and it’s called pantomime and it’s really a family show, but Jim Davidson is also a British Institution from the 70s and known for not being politically correct and out spoken, which is why he not allowed anymore on mainstream TV, he had many run-ins with the police hence the joke about the law, had his drivers license revoked many times hence the car gags, Jim made two adult only pantomimes, very hard to get today as most of his earlier material is now banned, I do own both dvds thankfully (sorry no help to you) Jim now runs his own TV stream service called USTREAM TV it may be posted on there. The little fella is also a icon of British comedy mainly in 60s movies and stage performances, even had a hit single his name is Charlie Drake. Hope this feels in a few gaps. Top man thanks

Charlie Drake had a sketch show. One of the sketches had a stunt where he'd be thrown through a shelf unit, "TheBookcase incident". The sets guy had nailed it together not knowing it was meant to collapse easily. It caused serious injury to Charlie Drake and knocked him out and fractured his skull. He was unconscious for three days. Later in his career he was even more of a wildcard than ever before. Was it due to this incident?

So, I looked up Jim Davidson after recording this reaction. I know that there are statements he made last year that has him in hot water. However, I think regardless of whatever controversy, the comedy is what is being reacted to and separate from the commentary on the social situation regarding race (at least I know it's a bit short sighted for what is happening in the US).

Totally agree. Jim can be a prat at times, quite misogynistic (although his racial comments have to be taken in context) however there is no denying he's bloody funny, great adlibber .....he's sort of in the camp of Freddie Starr, he too sometimes went a bit close to what is acceptable but they were different times and again he could be hilarious.....it's easy to knock older comics and hold them up against todays standards but that's a bit unfair.
@michaelkenny85403 жыл бұрын
@@lynnhamps7052 just never found the bloke funny. He always came across as completely full of himself and a vile human being. The claim he was 'well loved' is incorrect. He always had his detractors.

Jim Davidson made a career from making edgy race related jokes. He did an exaggerated black character called "Chalky white" and thick Pakistani accents in his jokes, which was just embarrassing and pointless. There wasn't really any clever social commentary to it, it was just making fun of them. He was a funny guy though in a broad sense, but he's just spent the rest of his career trying to blame political correctness for people not getting on with that racial aspect of his comedy, which he's just doubling down out of spite. I wouldn't recommend searching out any more clips of his, because this performance was one of the only non race baity things he did.

Makes me laugh how that made up word 'British' is trying to replace the word 'English'. Two Englishmen here so it's English humor. I've seen both of them live, the first one Charlie Drake was too ill to perform so they all took turns in doing his bits, and as you say they used voice recordings of him for the second version. The one thing I did notice seeing it live after seeing the video is a lot of the ad libs are actually scripted, but that doesn't make it any less funny.

Charlie Drake played in the sketch show The Worker which he played an Unemployed Worker at the job centre with Henry McGee 'Mr Pugh' of Benny Hill fame. He played the character Baron Hard-on, you know what I mean. Charlie Drake's catchphrase is "Hello my darlings". RIP to the Comedy Legend.

British Pantomime is a genre of theatre, usually for children and families and performed around Christmas and New Year. Jim Davidson does an adult version as here. Charlie Drake was an old time British comedic legend.. I loved him as a child.
