The little guy Charlie Drake was a massive star in the 1960s, tv, films and records ( My boomerang won't come back) let's just say he 'enjoyed' himself with drink, cars and ladies probably even more than a few well known pop stars! In one of his TV shows, the script called for him to be thrown through a bookcase, so the crew provided a specially built bookcase, what they never knew when they started filing the live show, a new carpenter 'took care' of the poorly built bookcase, screwed and helped it together. Charlie was thrown through the bookcase, he was knocked unconscious before he hit the floor, there are clips on KZbin, the next part in the script was him being thrown through a window. You can see the actor struggling with an unconscious Charlie, and must have thought he was acting, he threw him through the window,,,, Nobody thought anything was wrong, until they realised he had come back onto the set,,he had landed on a stage weight, and fractured his skull

The legendary, I mean 'legendary' Charlie Drake; a one-time massive music hall, variety and stage character. H e made a lot of money back in the late sixties and early seventies 'I'm a Gnu; How do you do", PG tips Tea Adverts! He also had his own greeting 'Hello My Darlings", fabulous radio and variety act!

I remember the Charlie Drake show when he was actually, rather than pretend, knocked unconscious and then thrown threw a window. He was supposed to come back through the door with his catch phrase "Hallo, my darlings" but didn't and the programme ended in some confusion. It was of course live in those days. You can see a poor recording on KZbin.

If I remember rightly, you are quite correct... I think he had gone tea-total by then..? But having seen the panto twice within a month, I can confirm that the whole performance was scripted and made to look as if it was 'ad-libbed'. This was just a tiny bit of a LONG adult panto and Charlie Drake had many appearances with lots of moves, actions and talking parts etc, so was the perfectionist in acting the way he did.

Ah, I thought you'd like this as soon as I saw it come up in my notifications ! It was actually all very cleverly scripted to look like ad-lib, apart from the bit that you viewed here, where Charlie couldn't remember his lines and had to get a prompt from the orchestra pit on 'telegraph pole'. Here's the full show - the lady who plays 'Sinders' is Dianne Lee, part of a very succesful folk / pop duo in the 70s and 80s, Peters and Lee. In the 1960's Charlie had a regular TV show which was brought to an abrupt end due to a serious injury. A sketch called for him to be thrown through a bookcase which had been rigged to collapse. Unfortunately, an overenthusiastic carpenter had discovered the rickety condition of the bookcase and sured it up! Result - Charlie was knocked unconscious with a fractured skull. The actors working with him, however, unaware of his real condition, continued with the rest of the sketch which required that they pick him up and throw him through an open window. He took three days to regain consciousness. For more Charlie, search KZbin for "The Worker" (I think it might have been an episode of this in which he was injured.)

Jim walks VERY close to a very low line. I only wish I could explain just what he means, to people who lived in the UK through the 1980s. He meant 'something' to everyone. He did (and still does) a "kindly" impersonation of a black character called Chalky; when there were very few black people on British TV. His act and his life are very much "of the time". But he is Jim Davidson, and we ALL spent hours laughing along back in the 80s. Those who remember those days can enjoy the simplistic bawdy nonsense; but there is lots for those who don't remember to be offended by. Jim Davidson is a tough act to sum up. He does good work, entertaining the troops. But he doesn't particularly like the cancel culture/PC brigade; and they CERTAINLY don't like him.
