The ending is sad because his dad died of cancer when he was 12 and his mom died a year later of a heart atack, even in the happy part of the song he also sings about feeling pain and feeling alone.

Joost and his family were eurovision fans from when he was a little boy. His wish was to compete in it some day. Now that he made ESC, his parents are not here to experience it. His father tought Joost that borders are human made, and thus can be broken by humans as well. This might be deeper than it seems, or us Dutchies are just high all the time.

This song is a tribute to his father / Parents who passed away. Europa in Dutch means Europe. Pa or Papa means dad. His dad once told him the world has no “Grenzen” which could be translated to both borders (Borders are a man made concept) or limitations (Many people create their own limitations in their own mind). This life lesson inspired him to have keep having an open view on the world and live his life to the fullest without putting limitations on himself. After his parents died he carried a lot of pain with him. No matter where on earth he was (Germany, Italy), whatever food he would eat (Escargots in France, Fish and chips in UK, Paella in Spain), he still carries this pain with him. In the end nobody but himself could deal with this pain and he himself must find peace with his losses. Only going through the grief and finding inner peace would put a end to this suffering. This song tells the story of him as an orphan trying to do exactly that. Him creating this song was a huge part of this process. The line with Stromae / papaoute (which Translates to: Dad where are you), is followed with the words about how he wants his parents to be proud of him. He used to watch Eurovision with his parents and told them one day he would be there performing. Which is what he now did.

That in-between piece is called happy hardcore. Its not much known in the US, mostly west/North Europe. Look up Paul Elstack to learn more.

The whole thing is happy hardcore :) the in between piece is more regular dutch hardcore, this is exactly like "rainbow in the sky" or "have you ever been mellow" without the hard beats

Maaskantje Gabber News. The music style originated in the early 90's in Holland and is overall better known as Hardcore. To be more specific this is the subgenre Happy hardcore. Later on it picked up the terms gabber and in media gabberhouse. The fans of the genre used to wear Australian and Cavello tracksuits and nike air max aka Maxxies. Sometimes paired with Levi 501 jeans. Other style aspects are the shaved head or sideshave and tight bound ponytail. You can see all these aspects in the clip. The followers of the music and style call(ed) themselfs gabbers which is kinda like "friends". The dance style is known as Hakken or gabberen. Interchangeable of the word gabber is a tad confusing for those not exposed to the scene but it allows for funny wordplay though. The Gabbers gabbered on gabber. Though Europapa starts in a bit of Eurobeat style everyone who heard hardcore here knew right there to get the maxxies ready hahaha Hardcore at Eurovision..... 20 years after I hung my double sided Aussie up. If you want to pronounce his name correctly, just consider this advice: an "oo" in Dutch sounds like the "o" in the English word "most". That means it's an actual prolonged 'o' sound. Also, fun fact: It reached the top position in the national music charts of The Netherlands.

Did you know there is also an american refference in it? the suite at 2:04 reminds me of the people of Texas. You could also argue its a bull riding suit. Which would make a refference to spain,mexico, america and other countries. The song is a gaint easter egg True art i'd say.

Trust me, I get your viewpoint, but have you done any research as to who Joost Klein is? This is a song about the loss of his parents and his struggle to cope. I get that some visuals may be interpreted as EU propaganda / anti Dutch culture (the burning windmill for example), but once you read into the lyrics you’ll realize it’s not pushing any agenda or hidden message.

Joost told his father he wanted to go to the Eurovision, on stage, at age 13!! And now….. he did it!!!
