It was the Spanish league and before that - in the 2nd half of the 80s until the mid 90s, the Italian league. In the late 60s, throughout the 70s, English clubs were some of the best- and had some of the greatest players - before Real Madrid and AC Milan corrupted UEFA. Then between 1977 and 1985, English clubs were the undisputed best in Europe- specifically Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Everton. Took a while to get back to that, but now they're here again- since 2017. It's the way it should be- they invented Football.

The 'Rainy Night In Stoke' wasn't really anything to do with Messi or Ronaldo in particular. Stoke back in those days were an extremely physical team, had a raucous crowd and often played in windy or rainy conditions (the Premier League in general was known for being more physical and refs a lot more lenient with contact when compared to La Liga), so it kind of became a thing where people would question fancy technical players doing well in La Liga. Its like yeah hes good, but could it do it on a rainy night in Stoke? Arsene Wenger's Arsenal back then were basically Barcelona lite and played in a similar way to Barca, with smaller, more technical players and had a tiki taka style of play. And they were one of the biggest victims of Stoke as they had a really poor record at Stokes stadium and would always get roughed up. I remember some horror tackles being made in those games, Adebayor took a bad one that kept him out for months and Aaron Ramsey suffered one of the worst broken legs in Premier League history after the Stoke caption Shawcross hit him with a bad tackle. Things actually got bad between the clubs, Arsene Wenger said what Stoke did wasn't football (or something to that effect) and Stoke fans used to sing 'Aaron Ramsey, he walks with a limp' in subsequent years. The clubs/fan bases still have a bit of hate between them to this day, but since its been a long time since Stoke were relegated you don't hear much about it.
