Hey, Ryan. No beer festival! The Oktoberfest (Wiesn) in Munich is the world's largest folk festival. It has been held annually on the Theresienwiese in the Bavarian capital since 1810. (originally on the occasion of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese on 12 October 1810). Approximately 6.3 million visitors attend the Wiesn during the 2 weeks. A beer has approx. 5.8 to 6.4% alcohol and approx. 7.3 million Maß (litres) are served. So the probability that you will get totally drunk is very high. It starts again next weekend, September 17. For one liter beer you have to order two Mass (1 liter glas). No innkeeper cares for calibration marks. If you complain they'll ignore you for the rest of your stay.

If you order one "mass" you'll get one normal Beer. If you order one Liter, i think you'll get one liter water.

1.) The alcohol percentage is around 6.0 to 6.3%, depending on the brewery (various breweries are present - but they must all be local to Munich). 2.) A decent tip at the Oktoberfest will be around 15-20%. However, as she said, particularly with your first order, feel free to be generous. 3.) The sausages you saw are smoked. Meaning you can eat them as is. The small pretzel is a dry pretzel. You can buy them as snacks in a bag in Germany. However, at the Oktoberfest, almost everyone buys giant, freshly baked pretzels. Bavarian pretzels can in no way be compared to what they typically sell in America. A proper pretzel must be fresh, crusty on the outside, „doughy“ and soft on the inside.

I was stationed in Augsburg for 82-84. Oktoberfest was an amazing experience and a lot of fun. Just a heads up, though, don't go on ANY 'spinny' rides if you don't want to have someone be sick on you. The people were friendly and everyone had a great time. However, there were a bunch of small beer fests all over Germany that are just as fun and much cheaper. There are rides and games galore and the games aren't 'rigged' like in America. One game, I paid 5 marks for 5 ping-pong balls. I tossed the balls into glasses and got to keep the glasses, which turned out to be crystal. At an American carnie, there would be a fan or something making sure you got nothing. One final tip. DO NOT GET IN THE BEER MAIDS WAY WHEN SHE IS CARRYING THE BEER! She has about 30lbs in her hands and is on a mission. She'll probably apologize on the way back, but you will go flying.

Oktoberfest is the biggest - yes... but it's (for my oppinion) way too crowded and WAY TOO expensive. From May on, every little town in Bavaria has it's own beerfest (Schützenfest from the local shooting clubs) with beertent and life music, Dirndl and Lederhosen (Tracht) and various rides. They are like smaller Oktoberfests all over Bavaria. We once was in our little town at the Schützenfest with cousin Jeff from the US. He was so impressed by the atmosphre and the high spirits in the beertent. He could'nt believe how hilarious happy young and old people in Dirndl and Lederhosen drinking beer, singing and dancing on the benches and tables. And yes, kids are allowed in beertents.

Schützenfest isn't really an only bavarian fest it actually dates back centuries and you can find them mainly in lower saxony, bavaria, lower and middle rhine as well as westphalia and switzerland.

2:15 "what a statue" indeed. It's the Bavaria statue and is actually a few years older than Statue of Liberty in New York. (The method used was very novel at the time and was acutally later copied for the building of lady liberty). You can also see the similarities of posture with one arm raised up.

Oktoberfest - the nightmare for a lot of us who live in or near Munich. A few years ago I had to travel on the first Saturday of the Wiesn. I had totally forgotten that it was that day until I arrived at the trainstation at 7 am. It was packed with people and most of them had at least one or two beer crates with them to tidy them over until the first beer will be served at noon, opening the first bottles on the train at 7am. Commuting during that time is also very taxing, because in the evening the trains are full of drunk people who very often puke where they sit and it is disgusting. The smell of stale beer and vomit in the train carriages is almost unbearable.

The trains full of drunk rude people, it was nightmarish to go to work during that time. As a woman i never walked alone in this time because it is too dangerous nowadays. But as i child i loved it! So the best time is to go early during the week and avoid the weekends. You get the chance to get into the tends and see popular stuff like the old traditional wiesn called "oide wiesn". Best thing to try are gebrannte mandeln (caramalized almonts or other nuts)❤. Or go to other smaller Volksfeste in other cities like the Augsburg Plärrer if you have a problem to book or it is too expensive

11:38 I worked at ATC administration in Germany and yes, it is cleared with ATC and usually also added as NOTAM for a no-fly zone. Only Rescue services should be getting permission to go aynwhere close in the airspace around the wiesn. And yes that ride is also registered with ATC as it exceeds standard height limits

A "Tracht" is traditional dress/ livery in german. There are many "Trachten" in Germany. The clothing that the bavarians use mostly on oktoberfest is called "dirndl" for women and the good old "lederhosen" for men. Note that they're not wearing this in there freetime or in everyday life. :D She definitaly talked about "houndreds OF thousands of people", because in 2018 there were 6.3 million people visiting oktoberfest which is an average of 394.000 daily. Despite the Oktoberfest is the most known "german" festivity internationally and also in Germany, next to carnival in the rhine region, the Oktoberfest is a pure bavarian thing. I am from the northern part of Germany and yet have been to Munich, but never planned to go to Oktoberfest there. You will find some other "little Oktoberfeste" in other cities, but there are mostly for tourists, like the Oktoberfest in Munich as well, I heard. Just to mention that most Germans haven't been to Oktoberfest and for most of the Germans it appears just as exotic like it appears for you.

There are several additional traditions around the Oktober Fest. The food was radish, cheese, and several sausages, some (like the Salami-Brezel) are smoked. - Even it's the biggest one, there are more beautiful ones across the country.

@Hellequin Maskharat ich habe 20 Jahre in der Gastro gearbeitet und hätte das sicher nicht getan, wenn das so wäre. Als richtiger Kellner (nicht in irgend einer Juppi-Butze) bekommst du einen nicht sehr hohen Festlohn plus Prozente vom Umsatz. Wenn du also z. B. eine Hochzeit vor- und nachbereitest, gerne mal 5-6 Stunden, haste in der Zeit quasi nix verdient. Das Trinkgeld ist auch hier ein wichtiger Teil vom Job.

Die reichsten Leute die ich kenne geben teilweise nur 10 Cent Trinkgeld in richtig teuren Restaurants, so dass man sich teilweise echt fremdschämt. Wenn die Rechnung geringer ist, ist weniger Trinkgeld angemessen als bei höheren Beträgen. Als Faustregel gilt zwischen fünf und zehn Prozent des Rechnungsbetrages, je zufriedener man war desto mehr ist angemessen. (Das gilt für Deutschland, in anderen Ländern gibt es andere übliche Trinkgelder.)

It's Volksfest (lit. a people's festival) for a reason, because all age groups can enjoy it. There are plenty of tame rides, even pony riding, lots of sweet treats and games for kids, who mostly come in the daytime/afternoon. Teens love the more adventurous rides and if they're 16 and up they can also go to the tents for a beer. Btw. you can take your kids to the tent too, but they have to leave by 8pm, which makes sense, because it can get increasingly rowdy inside the tents the later it gets. Most adults though are reasonable and only take their kids - if the weather allows it - to some of the beer benches outside the tent, where they can have food and lemonade. Once you're an adult - and if you don't have kids - you're mainly there for the tents, or let's say, whatever rides and other things you want to do on the fair ground, you better do it before going to the tent and not afterwards (recipe for disaster). Also, if you ever plan to travel to Munich for Oktoberfest, you want to book well in advance. If you want to book a box-table it's a year prior at least, though you can just try to come early to catch an empty one. Also hotels triple and quadruple in price during that time, so better book early here too... or know a local who likes you enough to host you and accept the risk of you throwing up all over their apartment.

Volksfest is the name in Bavaria and some other places in Germany for public fun fairs. I live in Bavaria and have been to the Oktoberfest several times, with friends and colleagues (many employers book tables in the beer tents for their employees). It is a very special atmosphere, yet expensive.

the flat, yellow thingy at the end was a Crêpe - a very flat pancake. Usually served with powdered sugar or Nutella. It's not German, though - it's French (the best ones in the area of Bretagne/France - where you get them savory or sweet in almost every Bisto or Restaurant) Yummy!

At Volksfest and Frühlingsfest in Stuttgart, kids are allowed in the beer tent until a certain time in the day/evening. Also, at the fests in Stuttgart, Wednesdays are usually family days and have discount prices on rides. I‘m not sure which day that is at Oktoberfest. Btw, you pronounced Tracht very well, imo!😃

If you like big festivals, you should know that germany also hosts one the biggest (and maybe craziest) metal festivals on earth. It is called "Wacken open air". It takes place in the small village Wacken (1800 residents), that is taken over from 85000 metalheads every year. That is the festival i would recommend in germany, not the tourist trap oktoberfest. It has better music, cheaper beer and nicer people.

A metal festival and a traditional (bavarian) folk festival are two completely different things to go to. The one is a multi day camping adventure and the other is a fun fair. Wacken is partially owned by the same investor as Knotfest in the US for a few years and the prices there are pretty steep as well and it's more like a fair now with all the attractions. I visited many metal festivals all over Europe and I personally prefer Summerbreeze in Germany over Wacken.

There are lots of Volksfeste across Germany. In North Rhine-Westphalia, there is for instance the Schützenfest in Neuss, carnival in Düsseldorf and Cologne and the big Cranger Kirmes (fair) in Herne (around 4M visitors each year). In other areas there are wine fairs. Also, Germany has great Christmas markets. If you want to visit Germany, it is best not to go where all the tourists go.

9:10 The Festival beer is traditionally a "Märzen", a beer brewed in March, with a bit more "gravity", alcohol and hops than normal, and then riped in the cold of deep cellars. But there are always rumours of some beer tent hosts lighten it with some water. 😉 9:45 The sausages at the left look like White and Red Schwartenmagen (headcheese). At the right we have a plate of sliced white radish with some small red radish and smoked sausages heaped on it. The bowl in the backgroud could be "Obatzda", a cheese cream from old Camembert, Romadur or Limburger and butter. 10:50 The Oktoberfest "Tracht" is not so traditional. Dirndl were invented in Munich during the 19th century, loosely based on traditional "Tracht" from the rural regions around Munich - which would be traditional festive clothes showing the village the person was from (every village had its own traditional cuts and colors, which allowed for joint purchase of materials) and often also the marital status (by how some applications were worn or some other signs). The "Dirndl" however was a cross between a chambermaid's costume and a summer holiday dress for the lady of the house and their daughters. The inventing of new "Tracht" costumes in the same style (Dirndl and Lederhosen = leather shorts, which were rather rare before) was supported by the Bavarian monarchy to foster a sense of Bavarian "nationality", Bavaria being a state of many ethnicities.

Ok let a Bavarian feed you some info about the Oktoberfest 😉 : - Tracht is a local traditional costume worn on holidays which often showed if a girl was married or unmarried or promised and which region of Bavaria she came from. "Real" Dirndl dresses ( which is the Bavarian word for "girl" ) are expensive and so are Lederhosen as they are made of real leather AND ONLY WORN IN BAVARIA and sometimes in the neighbouring state or for fun at beer festivals in other states. But it is ONLY TYPICAL for Bavaria like not every American is dressed like a cowboy !! - Oktoberfest starts in the middle of SEPTEMBER till the first Sunday in Oktober. - The sausage was SMOKED to preserve it. - Oktoberfestbeer IS STRONG . - Waitresses serving in those tents can make a YEARS income in 3 weeks ! - Normal amount of visitors about 6 MILLION. Go and have fun !!

Here is an important tidbit about beer during the Oktoberfest: Many people think they are being ripped off when they see the foam on top of the beer. They think they pay for mostly foam. Its actually the complete opposite. A Mass (the beer glass itself) has a "Füllstrich". A marking that shows where exactly 1 liter is. Beer will be poured right up to it and the foam on top is extra. It is called Oktoberfest because originally it was on the first weekend in Oktober. Over the years it extended forward to begin in September. Meanwhile it lasts for the two weeks within three weekends -- sometimes extended if the 3rd of October is past the third weekend. And no: Volksfest does not mean beer fest. Volksfest means "folk's fest" a festival for the general public, as opposed to the "nobles" when Bavaria was still a kingdom.

Tips from a Bavarian if you want to experience something like Oktoberfest: go to any village in bavaria in summer, there will be the same festivals but smaller and cheaper. When you want to buy a Tracht ( traditional clothing here ) you don't have to spent hundreds of dollars for it, only the brand clothing costs like 200 - 5000€. Just look for Tracht in regular clothing shops there it will cost only 20€. Almost every native Bavarian buys it there because the Brand Tracht is so expensive. Theres another thing I have to say, its not like that that boys can only wear Lederhosen and women only a Dirndl, everybody can wear anything. A cool funfact about the Dirndl: you can tell by on what side the Schürze is tied together if a person is single or not ( left=single, right=not single ). So if you want to visit Bavaria just ask some lokals to show you everything, they are very friendly. See you there Servus!

11€ for 1 liter (about 0.3 gallons) is NOT a great deal considering that 1 case of beer with like 20 bottles containing 0.5 liters each costs around 14-15€ on average (there are also cheaper ones and ones that are more expensive). So you might get 10 liters of beer for 14€ instead of just 1 liter at Oktoberfest. Guess that's the most expensive place to get yourself a beer all over Germany^^ At smaller beer festivals, beer is mostly less expensive. That's why most Germans will drink like 1, maybe 2 Maß there, not more. It's all about the atmosphere though ...

Don't expect too much. The Oktoberfest is usually being overrun by tourists, crowded, hours of waiting to get into a tent and once you're in, you can't get out. 25 years ago, it was really nice. Almost empty benches till noon, time to have your chicken, steak or whatever. The company members with their reserved benches came in the afternoon / evening.

On the topic of the "Tracht" I'd like to add that the thing the guy has in his side pocket is in fact a "Hirschfänger", which means a dagger whith a handle made of an antler. Many of them you can find on the lawn near the big statue you saw in the beginning (Bavaria). If you behave bad, you probably meet another friend of mine, he is superintendent, but he volunteers every year to look for them. If you come to Germany it is worth visiting the Oktoberfest. But from April/May on you can find countless beerfestivals in every town and people with Lederhosen and Dirndl.

I'm from around Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg) and there is a quite similar event to Oktoberfest every year at the exact same time. It's called "Cannstatter Wasen" or "Cannstatter Volksfest". The name comes from the place where its held. Cannstatt is a district of Stuttgart and Wasen is the area therein where the fest is held. It has between 3.5 to 4.2 million visitors every year and is held almost (it was paused during the world wars and the Covid19 pandemic) every year since 1818 (I think ... 🤔). The setting is similar to Oktoberfest and from all I can observe, this is by design from the beginning. People from Baden-Württemberg usually don't visit Oktoberfest because they have the Wasen. A lot of tourists also visit the Wasen instead of Oktoberfest. Trachten are common all over (South-)Germany, Switzerland and Austria. They differ of course, depending on the territory of their origin. And Lederhosen are indeed typical solemnly for Bavaria (and some parts of Austria afaik). You can see a vast variety of them (and the cheap fake ones) donned by Wasen visitors. In the past decade it became something like a cult for Wasen visitors to don a Tracht (be it a very expensive - they usually cost hundreds of Euros - original or a cheap fake) for that event. Almost like cosplay. They look very neat (in the morning ... in the evening "neat" normally isn't the word to describe their looks anymore 😜). I don't visit Wasen or Oktoberfest. Too crowded, too loud (and I hate the music in the tents - "Sweet Home Alabama" isn't the standard), too much spilled Beer, and definitely too much sick all over the place ... And even more disgusting is using public transportation in a 100 to 200 kilometer radius around Stuttgart during this time. Almost every train is covered in ... you know, sick ... and spilled, stale beer and ... all the things nobody here wants to know about. Nevertheless, a lot of people I know go there once or twice a week during the three weeks of the event and quite obviously having a riot. 🤪

Maybe you are interested in some statistics 😉 In the 16 to 17 days during the Oktoberfest (or 'Wiesn' like we call it in Bavaria) on average over 6 Million people visit it. The revenue of the whole area in these days is over 1 Billion Euro. The downside is the price for beer. If you drink one Liter at the Oktoberfest you pay double as much, as you will pay in a restaurant. Or six times more if you buy the same beer in a store. For us bavarians the Wiesn is the most lucrative tourist trap we got. Thanks to all visitors to make us so rich 😊
