Redesdale Bridge over the Campaspe River in Victoria Australia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redesdale_Bridge There was another V8 motorcycle- the Drysdale I think - but before either of them there has long been the Dirt Drag Bikes dropping 350 v8's, BMW & other exotic madness- should be an easy KZbin find... But greater than ANY of them would have to be Lucky Kaiser who chopped 2cylinders off a Rolls Royce Merlin & created a 5liter/300+ cu V-twin motorcycle that was both blown & Nitros! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoScoHWLjpyKnJo

The sound is largely governed by the crank pin angular spacing. For instance it could be set at 90° to fire two cylinders at a time, it could be a 180° flat crank or set at 45° all these variations will totally change the sound. Some GP bikes (and the road going R1 if I'm not mistaken) fire two cylinders at once to aid traction. It was noticed that large V twin bikes had better traction on the limit due to the gaps in the power pulses allowing the tire to regain traction, but the 4 cylinder bikes made more power due to a more ideal cylinder size; they therefore combined the two to make so called 'big bang' 4 cylinder engines.
@johncunningham48202 жыл бұрын
I think it has the 180 degree sound .
@dylanzrim36352 жыл бұрын
Yeah I dare say it’s a flat-plane crank. If it was firing 2 at a time it would say so. I wonder what it would sound like with an x-pipe
@johncunningham48202 жыл бұрын
Flat-plane is your NORMAL Inline 4 Crank . All 4 fire Separately and evenly . A Two-stroke Inline 4 will fire them in Pairs . Like a TZ-700 . The R-1 , with its Cross-plane Crank , is a " Big Bang " engine . Two Cylinders fire 90 degrees apart . Then 270 later , the OTHER two do the same . Leaves a slight Dead Spot each revolution that helps maintain Traction .
@johncunningham48202 жыл бұрын
@@dylanzrim3635 . Flat-Plane will not cause TWO to Fire at once . Just a different Cadence and Resonance .
@bruizey73192 жыл бұрын
Hey Ian, the sound comes from the fact that being 2 R1 cylinders with a common crank. So basically a flat plane V8 (plus the revs), I may be wrong but I think the area may have been Wauchope on the North coast of NSW

The sound comes from a Flat Plane crank, which is what the Lambos and Ferraris use, I believe one of the Corvettes has a Flat Plane Crank and sounds like a Supercar, so it's worth searching for in the KZbins for a proper explanation and comparison.

Definitely Australian. The engine is essentially two four-cylinder R1 engines cobbled together at 90°. The reason why this V8 sounds different is that almost all American V8s, which you are familiar with, have a cross plane crank. This bike's V8 and European V8s, however, are flat plane. The only American V8 that I know of that has a flat plane crank is the Mustang GT350. Cross plane V8 has that grunty sound while flat plane, which revs higher, has a wail.

That's a work of art that I'd never ride even if given it. Why? Bad experiences with motorcycles early on. Several close calls amongst friends and near relatives. Seen and heard enough of near fatal and/or crippling accidents because of usually insignificant things that I'd probably wouldn't assess as any chance of being dangerous before the incidents. I won't give examples because I still get queasy just thinking about it. I see the beauty and craftsmanship in fast motorcycles, but they're not for me. What I don't comprehend is the desire to have a motorcycle that's almost just crome and noise, while looking like a leather clad buoy... Oh, well... I'll stick to a minimum of 3 wheels, preferably 4 and above, so the 2 wheel aficionados can keep'em for themselves.

The engine produces a maximum peak output power of 164.95 HP (120.4 kW)) @ 6000 RPM and a maximum torque of 221.00 Nm (22.5 kgf-m or 163.0 ft.lbs) @ 4000 RPM.
