I worked on this show sometimes as an assistant editor. I’d sync up the audio and video. The amount of times she says something and one of the crew would just burst out laughing… she also sometimes says something so ludicrous she starts laughing m, it’s nightmare 😂 I’ve never laughed so hard at work in my life. I’d honestly go home each night with painful ribs from the laughing.

@@hammerhorrible I've actually got this from an interview by Diane Morgan herself, so unlike most people making random comments, I did look into it. She said it with all the letters, people know they're recording a comedy show, but they don't know what she's going to say or do, she also spoke about how she had to quickly improvise based on the response she gets, but she tries to anticipate some probable responses and prepare a comeback for those.

I think they're told before hand that it is for a special cause or for children's TV or even that the interviewer is autistic so they feel really uncomfortable about not playing along with it and trying to take it seriously.

I think the character started out on Charlie Brooker's weekly wipe. (Brooker went on to create the Black Mirror series) The show is from 2013 and onwards. Well worth checking out. Diane Morgan has reprised the role a few times now, all are just hilarious.

That's just a character name Boomer, the actress is Diane Morgan, she's brilliant and a jewel of British comedy, she's been in multiple shows over the years. Afterlife, The Cockfields, just to name 2 of many. She's a very gifted comedy writer too. I believe when doing Cunk interviews the experts are semi tipped off, and yes, the vibe is definitely Ali G style.

You really should react to more of Philomena Cunk, especially the History of America & WW1 & 2. I liked the UK military professor & the American specialist discussing Abraham Lincoln. How they kept a straight face during 5heir interviews, is beyond me. These people are all specialists in their field, who are told to treat her like a 12 year old child.

Philomina started as a recurring character on a satirical show called Screen Wipe by the Black Mirror writer Charlie Brooker. The character was popular so they developed a few 30 minute 'documentaries'. The interviews with experts are just one part of the show, a lot of the best bits are Philomina delivering monologues straight to camera in different locations. Cunk on History and Cunk on Earth were two of the early ones. But as I'm sure one of the other muppets has suggested, Cunk on America might be right up your street.

When she started out on Moments of Wonder on Charlie Brooker’s screener (the guy who writes Black Mirror) people didn’t know she was a comedienne, but once the cat was out of the bag, the people she interviews generally know what the game it. She does a range of documentaries all co-written by Charlie Brooker but the interviews are mostly her own work. There is a Cunk (Kunk) on America series you should watch to get you started

These are real experts who are being told before hand that they can’t laugh and essentially have to treat the interview as if they’re talking to a child. They’re aware of the comedy side, but they don’t know what’s about to be asked. The actress actually did say that there’s a bunch of bloopers that they just don’t air cause part of the magic of the show is the whole seriousness of this documentary style mixed with absurdity.

Philomena Cunk, I think, first appeared on Screenwipe presented by Charlie Brooker ( The guy wrote a bunch of Black Mirror episodes ) as a character, offering ridiculous opinion on whatever the topic of that week's episode was, in 1- 2 minute bits. @KingBoomer 11:20 the interviewees were primed before hand that the interview would be a parody. However they weren't told what questions would be asked. This helped alot of the interviewees to be forthcoming, knowing that they weren't being trapped into a prank or a waste of time, whilst still making sure their answers were genuine, candid and on the spot since they still didn't know the exact nature of the questions.

Fab reaction! 🤣👍👍 KB, you'd really love the series these clips are from. *Cunk on Britain* (2018), starring Diane Morgan as the title character Philomena Cunk, an ill-informed investigative reporter. Only 5 eps and only 1 series. All killer, no filler. It was followed up by a similar series, *Cunk on Earth* (2022), which also has only 5 eps. Premise; Philomena Cunk (Diane Morgan) travels around the world, interviewing (real-world) experts such as Paul Bahn, Martin Kemp, Nigel Spivey, and Shirley Thompson about world history. The series introduces subjects such as the development of agriculture and early civilisation, the rise of Christianity and Islam, the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, the First and Second World Wars, the Cold War and the Space Race. With an eye to the future, Cunk concludes the series with a speculative comment on the possibility of AI takeover. These two shows and The Day Today and also BrassEye are the absolute best of UK comedy. They even top Peep Show and Inbetweeners (which I love!). I can't recommend these four shows enough.
