As being a Bolton man and grew up in Little Lever and born In Fanworth (same hospital as both Peter and Paddy) and knowing the club and areas they film, I even seen some filming of this great show, I can relate very well to everything Peter did in this entire show. I thank you Taffe for having this here on YT as not many have these full episodes and Peter just recently created a new TY channel himself but he only has bits of shows on, he did I guess have the others taken down who played full episodes. You my friend do however place credits and do such a good professional job in showing these episode and all Peter Kay things.

A random fact a few years ago it was reported there was a fire at Ted Robbins (Den Perry) home when the tumble dryer caught fire in the basement and the fire services had to attend. At the time certain makes of tumble dryers had been recalled, repaired or had to be replaced by the manufacturer... so at least he wasn't responsible for that one!

One nice touch I only just noticed on this rewatch - in this episode Potters flower vase/makeshift pint glass is black. It's charred from the Phoenix Club burning down in Season 1, when the flower vase was clear glass!

The interesting thing watching all the episodes back-to-back is the way the comedy went from really naturalistic and almost verite-style in the first episode to being much broader and sillier in later ones. The same thing happened to the other great working class UK sitcom of the same era, The Royle Family.

Are you aware of Dave Spikey's (Jerry) series "Dead Man Weds*"? It's about a local newspaper in a village with a large chemical plant where strange things might be afoot. He wrote and starred in it, alongside Johnny Vegas. You'd have a hard time locating it; as far as I know, it's never been repeated. But I think you would like it. *The title is lifted from an advertising board for a local newspaper Spikey once saw, which bore the ambiguous slogan 'Dead Man Weds'; did he die on a Wednesday or get married post mortem....?!

The representation of Asian people is definitely borderline, but for what it's worth I don't think Kenny Jr's fake tan would be interpreted as a black-face joke. I don't know if fake tan is common in the USA but it's kind of stereotypical of many Northern English towns such as where this is set to see women walking around with faces that colour, especially in the early 2000s. It's far-fetched but more towards what people would recognise to be 'too much fake-tan' as opposed to what people would recognise as black-face.

It's reflective of a specific cultural attitude... It's also played as ignorant, just as the characters are. Personally, it doesn't bother me; and i'm hoping it doesn't suffer the same fate as Fawlty Towers, or the I.T. Crowd.
@ChavvyCommunist
@ChavvyCommunist 3 жыл бұрын
@@kmcarchive8288 i'm not so sure it is played as ignorant, considering the prison shower scene in Max & Paddy. That trope is an age old racist and homophobic one. I can't say the R word because it seems to be getting my comments auto removed.
@kmcarchive8288
@kmcarchive8288 3 жыл бұрын
@@ChavvyCommunist, No, don't get me wrong; I totally agree about M&P, especially the prison scenes, since the stereotyping was so overbearing... Phoenix Nights, however, was tempered with better writers and kept things a little more realistic... Remember, this is clubland in the north of England... Bernard Manning was still the epitome of entertainment in such places... The Half a Shilling episode gave a good example of the type of act that was booked back then, and was also indicative of the sheer ignorance of the club itself as to what they were booking. Personally, I think this episode is quite mild compared to some of the grossly offensive things you would have come across in a genuine northern working man's club in the late 90's... That's all I'm saying.
@ChavvyCommunist
@ChavvyCommunist 3 жыл бұрын
@@kmcarchive8288 Fair dos. I was only 5 when the 90's ended, so I wouldn't know lmao. But yeah, I agree the level of racism in PN is genuinely debatable. Personally I'd like to hear how East Asian folk feel about it, since they're personally affected.

It’s as Taffe says, Ep. 10 is probably the one that has aged the worst and is very much a product of its time. Episode 11 still has some of the Chinese chef stuff, Episode 12 is the best in the series and has aged extremely well.
