There’s a great little detail I don’t notice till I watched them back to back, out the front of the club there is a dark green Ford Cortina that is slowly having parts stolen from it over the run of the series.

There is a HUGE difference between snooker & pool. The table is about 2 times as big, pockets much smaller.. You pot a red, then a 'colour' (which is replaced until all reds are potted, then you have to pot the colours in a strict order. Each ball is worth a score (reds are 1, colours range from to to 7) and you win the game by scoring the highest, you can have a 'break' ranging from 3 to 147. The professionals average a 100+ break, I average around 26 😄😄😄

For reference : "open the box" is a traditional northern working mens club game where you buy tickets (usually 50p each) and if your number is drawn you get to pick from a bag of keys. Only one key "opens the box" which holds the prize money. Tested keys are removed from the draw each week until the prize money is won. The prize money goes up each time the box isn't opened. £33 is really low for an "Open The Box " prize 😂😂 - it usually starts at £100 or more and works it's way up. I've won it at £500 (many many years ago) and have known it to be higher.

Many years ago I used to sing in the working men’s clubs. The humour is absolutely spot-on, because they are exactly like the real people that you found in those places. And there are little things you pick up on each watch. In that one Kelly saying I’m not pulling off a horse, and another episode police probe Leeds girls snatch… Very funny in English humour

So glad you find it funny, because it was designed that way. Incompetence is a great humour subject. Incidentally, northern English people are amongst the most warm-hearted people in the UK, and are very quick to laugh at themselves. I recently heard an interview from Paul Simon who was due to go on stage in a similar northern club in the mid 1960s. The elderly compere with his flat cap asked the audience to be quiet, and "to give the turn a chance". Paul Simon finds that funny to this day. Salt of the earth and genuine people.

Snooker is played by potting a specific sequence of coloured balls, alternating with reds and finishing with the black. Pool is pretty much the same as American 8-ball. Only difference being UK pool has two colours of balls, red and yellow, instead of multicoloured ones with half stripes and half solids. Although 8-ball sets are a lot more common on pool tables these days.
@jen6879

The red is worth 1, yellow 2, green 3, Brown 4, blue 5, pink 6, black 7. You have to pot a red before you can pot a colour and you must say which colour you are going for first, the colours are replaced on the table when they have been potted, when all the reds have been potted you pot the colours in order, your turn ends when you miss or foul, if there is a draw the person who potted black wins.

Snooker is played with 15 red balls worth 1 point and then 6 coloured balls, each with a separate value of 2 to 7 in order from yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black. If you fail to pot a valid ball or you commit a foul, play goes to the other player. A foul would result in penalty points going to the other player. The aim is the win the frame by scoring the most points. A run of consecutive pots is called a break. The highest normal break is a 147. This is 15 reds followed by 15 blacks then all colours in order. Each game is called a frame and each match is best of a certain number of frames, such as best of 19, first to 10. To understand the very basics, I would watch the current fastest maximum 147 break which was set by Ronnie O'Sullivan in 1996 in 5 minutes and 20 seconds. That is easy to find on KZbin. Once you have seen that I highly recommend you react to a popular game show from the 90s called Big Break which was all about snooker.

Snooker is played on a 12" table, with 15 reds and six coloured balls that all sit on different spots. The reds are assembled in a triangle (like a pool rack). The players have to pot a red first (one point), followed by a colour (various points, from 2 - 7) then another red, then another colour and so on until they miss, whereupon it's your opponents turn. When all the reds have gone, the colours are potted for the final time in sequence yellow - green - brown - blue - pink - black to end the game (or 'frame' as it's called). Player with the most points wins. If it gets to the point where one player has such a big lead that the other guy cannot possibly win, he can concede the frame. Snooker is a huge game in the UK, it is a big spectator and TV sport and the top players earn a lot of money. It is also fast-growing in Asia and there are some top players from China etc. now too.

Basically, in pool you clear a certain number of balls then pot the black to win. There's loads of variations but they all work around that idea. In snooker you chain balls together to score points, alternating between reds and colours which are worth varying numbers of points. When the balls are all cleared (or when one player has so many points the other can't beat them and concedes) the player with the biggest score wins. The table is bigger, the pockets smaller and it's generally a much slower and more strategic game. It's called snooker because a big part of the game is safety play, i.e. putting the cue ball in a position where your opponent can't hit a legal ball which is referred to as snookering. It's a good game and worth watching a few matches to see if you like it, there's loads on KZbin.

Two other British comedy series you might want to look at are Nightingales, made just before Father Ted. It's about 3 night time security guards. Three guys in a building doesn't sound much but Father Ted can be described as 3 priests in an island. Nightingales has surreal moments, just like Ted, and I loved it. Sadly, they put it on late at night and only 2 series were made. Last time I looked, KZbin had it. The other show is called Goodnight Sweetheart and is about a guy who owns a collectables shop. When he walks through the gate at the back of his shop, he finds he's in wartime London. He gets married in both the present and the past and has to deal with the chaos it causes. He;s very popular in 1940's London because he plays the piano and sings Beatles songs, that he says he's written himself. It might be easier to get in America than it is here. In the UK, we can't get Father Ted on KZbin.

He is best known for playing Old Tommy in the absolutely fantastic and heavily under rated Early Doors which has the same "Northern" humour as Phoenix Nights, written by Craig Cash who also wrote and starred in The Royle Family. Dusseldorf is a city in Germany and is the setting for the best comedy/drama of the 80's Auf Weidersehen Pet, a story of 3 unemployed bricklayers from Newcastle who go to Germany to find work and team up with other unemployed workers in the building trade from various parts of the UK. There’s a difference between snooker and pool and there’s probably someone who can explain it better than me but in snooker you have to pot a red before you pot a colour, or something like that

Billiards, pool, and snooker appear to be very similar but the three vary based on the number of balls, pockets, table size, cue stick size, and several other factors. Some people use the term billiards and pool interchangeably. This isn’t completely incorrect however. Pool is a type of billiards game. Have we confused you yet? Here’s a quick breakdown of the differences between billiards, pool, and snooker. Differences between Billiards, Pool, & Snooker: Billiards - played on a table that has no pockets and uses 3 balls. One red ball, one white ball with a spot, and one white ball without a spot. Pool - played on a table with 6 pockets with 9 to 15 object balls plus an additional cue ball. The number of balls depends on the type of pool you’re playing. More on that below. Snooker - played on a table that has 6 pockets. Snooker tables are larger than pool tables but the pockets are smaller than a pool tables’. Snooker is played with 15 pink numberless balls, 6 numbered object balls, and 1 cue ball. Billiards Table Billiards Billiards is a family of games that are played on a table with pockets and a cue stick. “Carom billiards” was the original name. Billiards is a type of game with many others falling within this category, collectively called “cue sports.” Cue sports, or billiards, include all sports that are played with a cue stick and billiarded balls on top of a cloth covered table with leather (or rubber) borders. Billiards is divided into 3 sub-categories; pocket billiards or “pool,” carom billiards, and snooker. Fun Fact: The word “billiard” originated from the French word “billart” which means “mace.” The mace was an object that was used before the modern day cue stick. Pool As stated above, pool is a type of billiards game. The term “pool” is used to refer to billiards games that use pockets (pocket billiards). Pocketed billiards was the original term used for the game. “Pool” is a short for “poolrooms.” Back in the 18th century, gamblers came to poolrooms to bet on horse races which was illegal back then. The money was “pooled” into a large pot. In order to make poolrooms appear to be less suspicious, poolrooms often had pocketed billiard tables. Gamblers would play casually while they waited on the results of the real game. Out of this, the pool table received its name. Within the sub-category of pool there are many different types of pool including 8 ball (most popular), 9 ball, straight pool, and one pocket pool. Each pool table has 6 pockets. The cloth on a pool table is much slower than a billiard table. Pool balls are a standard 2 1/4” in diameter. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POOL AND BILLIARDS Table Size - Pool tables are at least 3.5’ x 7’ while billiards tables are much larger with a minimum size of 5’ x 10’. Balls - Pool uses anywhere from 9-15 object balls depending on which game you’re playing. Billiards uses 3 balls that are larger than pool balls. Cloth - The cloth on a pool table makes the balls travel slower. Cloth on a billiards table is fast. Cue Stick - Pool cues are longer and have a thinner shaft. Billiard cue sticks are smaller but have a thicker butt and a shorter ferrule that makes the stick taper faster. They also have a wooden pin joint and a small tip. Snooker Snooker table at Grove Farm Snooker uses 21 balls (measuring 2 1/8”) plus an additional white cue ball. There are 15 red, 1 yellow, 1 brown, 1 blue, 1 pink, 1 black, and 1 green. In snooker, the yellow, brown, blue, pink, black, and green are referred to as object balls. Snooker is different from billiards and pool because there are three balls that can be used as a striker to hit other balls whereas you can only hit the white cue ball in the former. As if to make things more complicated, Europeans prefer 6 x 10 snooker tables while Americans prefer smaller 5 x 10 tables. The main goal of snooker is to score more points than your opponent by pocketing red balls and object balls (alternating). Once all the red balls have been pocketed, you can then begin to pocket the remaining object balls in a specific order. Conclusion Billiards, pool, and snooker are three different games that are all played on a cloth covered table. The main difference is the size of the table and the number of balls used in the game. Although they are closely related and have even evolved from one another, they are distinctly types of cue sports. The main physical difference between snooker and pool is the table and pocket size. Snooker players require a more homogeneous ridged stance, where as pool players can use whatever stance they like. In pool, this more free form stance is important for the popular versions of pool, such as 9 ball, because it requires a power break to pot balls off the break. This is probably a shitty explanation as I'm drunk.

Snooker and Pool are very different kettles of fish, Pool is easy, any dope can win playing that, Snooker on the other hand is insane difficult, not to mention the table is about 4 times larger and the pockets smaller, my highest break is only 43 (poor i know) and ive played a lot. You need to check Ronnie O'Sullivan out doing his 147 in the quickest time ever in 1996 (i think 5mins 20secs), that man is God himself when in the zone on a Snooker table, he is 6 times World Champion including winning it this year and considered the best talent EVER in snooker.

"Pool is easy, any dope can win playing that" Always amused at this idea, with anything. If something is easy, it is easy for all parties involved and therefore all things are back to equal. So it should be no easier to win at, no matter how easy the game is.
