It is great. Some comedies write crazy and unbelievable and outrageous antics into their shows which would never happen in real life. Phoenix Nights captures accurately the 'naffness' of cheap working men's clubs in England only occasionally going overboard with some of the stunts. I'm a Brit in America but spent my youth as a bass player in a cover band performing in approx 100 similar clubs around the Midlands. They are wonderfully friendly places but they take themselves so seriously just as Peter Kay's characters do here. Some of the acts are truly appalling, I've seen a few acts who supported us die some terrible deaths and suffer cruel heckling. The show is brilliant and should be more mainstream in the US on hulu or Netflix for example. It's a refreshing change not to have to suffer a laughter track as well. One story from my past: Golden rule of the club #1 NOTHING shall interfere with the BINGO. One place had us 8 to 9pm then 945 to 11 with Bingo between the slots. The manager lectured us for ten minutes before saying we HAD to be stopped by 9 but couldn't leave the stage until the bingo caller started to make sure nobody left the audience for the bingo. We explained it was difficult to time a song to finish seconds before 9 but we'd try. Dude told us there was a red light at the front of the stage that would light up when we had 5 mins to go. 1 minute to go and it would start flashing. If the song was not going to finish he insisted we 'fade it out'. We were a 5 piece band (One Night Affair) drums, bass, guitar, keyboard and female singer. Anyway as soon as the red light came on we were actually between songs and the audience who saw the light started chanting and stomping their feet BINGO!!! BINGO!!! BINGO!!!. The manager waved at us frantically to play another song so we started "The Way We Were" a slow and emotional song. For 3 minutes as the singer sang gently the audience got louder and louder BINGO!! BINGO!! etc... Then the red light started flashing and the singer walked off. I think she was crying. The guitarist started to play an improve rock lead and the rest of segued into a heavy blues jam kinda zeppelinish. It got and louder until the drummer finished a massive roll with a loud crash.... At precisely the moment the manager cut the power to us. Of course we all stopped playing as soon as we heard the crash, drummer too and the manager waved the bingo to start and the audience stopped shouting BINGO and gave us a very polite clap clap clap and bingo started. Backstage the manager came in and we thought we were ****ed. He said that was ****ing amazing lads and lass! How the **** did you time that so well?! Sorry I cut your power its just club policy. Some of the acts we get here show no respect to the bingo, but it's all the ladies come in for. I've got some more bookings for you. See me after your next slot. We were back on stage for 945 and the power came back right on the dot. Never mess with the bingo, never.
