Every bottle of wine in Australia tells you how many standard drinks are in it based on the alcohol volume. In the USA not a single bar I went to poured a standard drink. A lot of my American friends would think they were under the limit because they thought they’d only had one glass but the glass of wine they’d been poured was easily two standard drinks.
@peterweaver7596

also a lot of bars in australia have a line on the wine glasses measuring a standard drink

@brontewcat
@brontewcat 5 ай бұрын
@@peterweaver7596Actually the line is not a standard drink. The standard drink for wine is 100mls. A very small glass of wine is 120mls, but most glasses are served at 150mls. No pub or bar in Australia serves standard drinks of wine. Most pubs serve schooners as the default glass of beer, when I was in my 30s it was a middie. It is really important to know this as a lot of people are picked up over the limit because they think pubs/bars serve standard drinks.
@brontewcat
@brontewcat 5 ай бұрын
I am yet to see a pub or bar in Australia that serves a standard glass of wine. A standard glass would be 100mls. Usually pubs and bars pour 150mls.
@kayelle8005
@kayelle8005 5 ай бұрын
@@brontewcat a standard drink is by alcohol volume translated to millimetres so 13.5% red wine is 100ml. Red wine typically varies from 11% to 14.5% so you have to adjust up or down depending on the wine. How quickly alcohol is absorbed is impacted by numerous factors which is why they no longer teach the one drink per hour rule I was taught in my youth. I don’t drive and I don’t drink that often so I’d love to go to the pubs and restaurants where you’re getting served large pours. In this economy if I’m buying a drink I’d appreciate the extra amount.

Ah! The Cherry Ripe defence used to be a thing because it has (or had) alcohol in the dark chocolate bar. I'm pretty sure someone got off a drink driving charge because they proved they had just eaten one because they still had the wrapper in the car. If I remember correctly, Cadbury reduced the amount of alcohol in the chocolate bar to avoid further problems.

Although I did not realise it at the time I failed a breath test because i used breath freshener about five minutes before being tested. If I had known the breath freshener was 4% alcohol then i would have asked for a blood test. I got the distinct impression that the sargeant running the booze bus thought i was not impaired at all (from what came out in court).

100% true. I have had my fair share of run-in’s with the law… both on the road and off, and can say that, categorically, the cops were always in the right and always treated me well. I suspect that a lot of those who have horror stories about Aussie police were probably the authors of those outcomes themselves. Police treat you the way you treat them. If you are an ar$eh01e to them you can expect them to respond in kind.

That was a great explanation in the beginning of the vid, how the US DUI detection works. In Aus you are almost always tested for DUI first, regardless of the reason you are pulled over. And yeah, you can be pulled over anywhere at any time, for the specific test of a DUI. They do them all the time. Even if the person was driving properly. It's very much a stealth tactic, to catch anyone. Because DUI drives can still keep to the speed limit, and keep the car in the lane. So at any given moment, you could be driving next to a drunk person, and have no idea.
@grandmothergoose

I got pulled up twice within 15 mins by the same RBT once. I got pulled over the first time on my way home from a local shop, all clear, continued on, realised I'd left a bag of my shopping at the shop so went back to get it, on the way home again they pulled me up again. Only after the cop with breathalyser in hand approached my window they realised they'd already checked me. I told them it was so much fun the first time I wanted to do it again. Because they had pulled me up they had to breathalyse me again, so jokes about how much booze I could have consumed within that 15 min window came out thick and fast. So long as you haven't been drinking or doing drugs, it takes about 2 minutes and you're on your way again, and the cops are friendly and fair and good for a laugh so long as you are too. If you have been drinking or drugging, you shouldn't be driving and everyone knows it so it's your own fault if you get busted.
@Patracat

LOL at this! The first time I was pulled over I said to the cop "wow this is exciting! I haven't done this before" and he looked at me as if I was crazy. I don't do drugs or booze, so I was all clear, but I think he was wondering about me!

Driving from Newport to Anaheim via Huntington and I was at a place called Westminster where 2 lanes were shut down and the police were pulling over 5 or so cars at a time and directing them into the spare lanes. When I told my buddy, he said that it was happening a bit. Maybe, RBT's are being introduced over there and it's up to each State to choose?

By the end of the day and going backwards and forwards getting parts urgently needed for customers cars and get them done for the holidays, tevery single copper in the line up all knew me all too well and would just laugh at me as i slowly pulled up in my company van with its full signage. After my tenth test they wouldn't bother testing me again and we would have a funny chat while waiting for everyone else to get tested and get out of the way so i could continue on. And that’s part of the reason the US has such a high fatality rate. In the US it’s considered an infringement on individual rights to test a random driver for drugs or alcohol. In Australia we consider it an infringement on everyone’s rights to drive pissed or drug-fucked. If you choose to drive then you are submitting to being stopped by the police to enforce road laws.

Former breath analysis operator here. As you've seen, our laws are different, if you drive on a public street, you have a liability to submit to a RBT, we don't need a belief of intoxication. You are normally charged with the offence of exceeding 0.05%. If you are clearly impaired (all over the road etc), you can be charged with DUI, which is a higher level. Penalties are mandated within certain ranges. A first offence under 0.1% used to be 3 months disqualified and around $300 - but it varies between states. Subsequent offences are higher fines. Third offence or driving whilst disqualified might be a jail sentence. Most states can issue an infringement notice for low level offending. Drugs don't require a threshold, if it's present, it's an offence - but there is more science around alcohol and impairment. There are some great graphs showing the reduction in the road toll when RBT's were introduced.

We have so many of these dramas because they're 1) entertaining and 2) they do a really good job of getting everyone aware of the various 'scary' situations we end up in. Like, getting a brethaliser is way less stressful if you've watched a drama show where they brethalise everyone. You need to watch the Victorian drink driving ads. They won world awards and are still used in driving schools all over the world. Everyone shocks you and it doesn’t matter how many times you see them. They made them to stop young drivers drinking and driving. In the first year they cut the deaths down by 83% and that is amazing. My youngest daughter grew up watching those, she and none of her friends drink. There is a 14 minute one where they all of the ads together making one story and it is very clever.

only driving add I've seen that's better than those is the one about mobile phone use, where they play an ad in a cinema pre-movie, where it's a car, driving down a straight road for a while, then they send an sms to all phones in the area & a second later, the car on the screen screeches & swerves off the road into a tree - the people in the theatre had in large numbers taken their eyes off the screen to look at their phones, so got to really experience just how quickly the car can lose control if they look away from the road to check their phones

Love Border Security... there's only so many possibilities with RBT, but the variety of stories on BS is amazing - as is the creativity (and, at times, the stupidity) of the public.

I think RBT is the main export Australia has. It seems wild the US doesn't have random roadside DUI tests, it's common in NZ and Aus

Love your attitude to drink/drug driving 👍🏼 BTW when your teaching someone to drive not only the driver need to have a BAC of 0.00 but the instructor as well, when I was teaching my daughter she got pulled over for RBT so we both got tested, it's surprising how many people think that since they're over the limit they can let their child learner driver drive and they'll be ok. From the NSW drivers handbook for alcohol "Penalties can be fines, loss of licence, prison or an alcohol interlock on your vehicle. The penalty depends on how much you’re over the limit and whether it’s a first or repeat offence." Many drugs like MDMA are illegal, so getting caught with those will cause you more problems. There is a variation on this show for each state and there's an NZ version which is quite funny too, it shows pretty much weekly so there will be many hours of this type of entertainment.

I have seen some people that handle their alcohol far better than most every day people. Remember on the news many years ago an elderly Egyption man had a fall and went in for xrays and scans to check everything was okay. They were stumped to see and realise the man had 4 kidneys. He commented he had no idea but it explains why he could drink everyone under the table when he was younger and no one stood a chance in beating him in drinking alcohol.

A cherry ripe is a dark chocolate bar with morello cherry and coconut, it's delicious but takes a long time to eat because of the desicated coconut. Pretty sure it wouldn't trip off a drug test though.

I stopped driving years ago, only because it was never quite my thing. All too stressful. I can't imagine what it would feel like to be behind the wheel drunk and driving, anymore than I could imagine what it would feel like to find myself pinned under a wheel after being knocked over by a drunk driver. Grim stuff all round! Joel, blessings!

21:00 At the end of the show they tell you what punishments they have received. Depends on what range they blow and if they are repeat offenders. Generally for a low range DUI as a first offence it's just a fine and a few Demerit points lost. Demerit points are a system we have in Australia once you reach 0 you lose your license.

A Cherry Ripe is a chocolate and cherry bar, that people say give a positive test for alcohol - not drugs - if you're tested within 15 minutes or so. I've known heavy drinkers to keep a cherry ripe wrapper in the car so they can use it as an excuse if they're pulled over.

Here in Victoria, the increase in alcohol and drug testing has been paired with decades of public education by the TAC (Transport Accident Commission) both on TV and by other means. Now if you're at a party or at the pub and are being encouraged to drink, you can just say that you're the designated driver or that you have to drive. Years ago, that was not the case. Everyone knows how many standard drinks (by amount of alcohol) are likely to take you over 0.05 for both men and women. It's taken decades of public education and regulation, but it's seriously cut the road toll.

RBT can be found anywhere, including on back roads. A family friend was breathalysed after lunch when he was going to his wool shed. A public road runs through the property, and the shed was on the other side of the road to his house. The thing is the road really was off the beaten track, and is really only used by people driving to their farms, not to get to any other town.

If you watch the entire episode, they answer all your questions, at the end of every episode. You will,find out, the resolution of each case, shown in the episode. All the things you wonder about (jail time, fines, loss of license for a period of time, loss of license points, e5c), yes, these are all possibilities.

The annoying thing about a breathalyser is that you must wait 15 minutes after eating or drinking before using one. But it's also good chance to reflect on whether you may have had too much.

As an Aussie we also hate the cliff hanger stage of the show, but it is a great show, unfortunately they usually only get a small fine and maybe a small license suspension depending on how over the limit they are and if they are repeat offenders, keep up the great vids mate 🇦🇺
